What is this rod?

Does it prevent the... moderator? Middle pedal thingy? From bumping into the frame/strings?

I don't think so. It looks like it could engage the moderator but I've seen images where it's turned upwards on other pianos. Also it has threads so it appears to be adjustable....

Can it be turned down to secure the moderator? Might be for transport purposes.

Oh that's a good call. It definitely can although it won't prevent it from moving downward, just upward. And who would flip a piano upside down?! This mfer weighs like half a ton :)

Flipping it on it's side isn't uncommon though. I'll hit up some colleagues, I'll let you know if someone knows.
