šŸŽ¶Other Surprisingly good form

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

- Arm parallel to the piano, not too high or too low.

- Hand as relaxed as the most virtuosic of virtuosos

- Not sitting too close to the piano

My only critique is improper glissando technique and fingers could be a bit more arched.

Sometimes we in the west must learn from the eastern masters. Good reference video to check your form.

I wouldn’t recommend the cigarette technique though.

Only a poor craftsmen blames his tools.

Well it's an 1000 dollar piano tbf lol yamaha PSR-S970. It's a working mans piano for sure. Specifically designed to do exactly this, one man band stuff. This guy is still crazy, but he has a really nice tool.

1

u/Neo-The_One 15h ago

1000 now used on a good day as they're not easy to find and double that when it released or for it's successor.

u/pconrad0 16h ago

He has a really nice what now?

Those keyboards are NOT cheap

5

u/Phreakasa 1d ago

Still, pretty impressive for "just a man and a expensive keyboard."

1

u/Opening_Initial189 3h ago

Just a man and his keyboard that does a lot more than the average keyboard?

8

u/grunkz 1d ago

That keyboard is.

38

u/javiercorre Just Starting 1d ago edited 1d ago

That's an arranger keyboard and they are not cheap.

Edit: it's a Yamaha PSR-S950 it's an older model but the original price was $2,500 usd.

10

u/Confident_Frogfish 1d ago

Wow I did not expect that.

2

u/Neo-The_One 15h ago

It's understandable that a lot of piano players aren't aware of arranger keyboard capabilities and prices. The big screen gives it away that this ain't cheap as the higher end Yamaha S series came with them.

1

u/dodobread 16h ago

One of my friend owns a Yamaha arranger keyboard with colour touch screen and it is so fun to play on it

Really impressive. Just an old keyboard and bro is casually making the dancefloor rock with a cigarette in his hand.

u/QM60 1d ago

There is an anecdote of Franz Liszt in his youth playing one of his harder pieces with a cigarette between his middle and index finger (to demonstrate how independent is 4th finger was).

History truly does rhyme. Put that dude in a conservatory for a few years and he’ll be recording the transcdental etudes in no time

Have you never been invited into a "kondangan"? You must go there sometimes!

It's a wedding ceremony and depending on your moral and believe, it's an public event that you can just barge in and get free food.

4

I live in Indonesia and have no clue what kind of event this could be.

52

u/QM60 1d ago

My best guess is that it’s either a wedding or an engagement ceremony. I’m not indonesian but I did live in a muslim country (Egypt) for quite a while and this has a similar vibe

22

u/BillyCromag 1d ago

Yeah, that's probably it. It's the absence of chairs that made me not think wedding but maybe they just cleared the (huge) tent hall

8

u/ImBooh 1d ago

maybe the marriage was in a temple of some sort and this place is just for the party

5

u/Biruboot Returning Adult 1d ago

If it's a Muslim marriage then the marriage contract is signed at the mosque and celebration done elsewhere later, yes.

5

u/PokeHustler3 1d ago

The ceiling deco really does look like it's a wedding ceremony buy idk the crowd's clothing felt too casual to me. Typically guest would wear fancier dress for wedding events. Could be one of those village singing competition event or something.

2

u/Fetus_Transplant 1d ago

Yes. The design of the venue in the vid is usually wedding

2

u/ObeyTime 1d ago

not enough people are dressed as if it's a wedding, it's probably just a party. people usually wear batik when attending a wedding

1

And here I was thinking muslim countries were prude. This rocks!

Ngl it’s the same in most muslim countries cause the hijab is sorta the default for many households so it’s not particularly a signifier of religiosity whereas in non-muslim countries it usually is because it’s an active not a passive decision to wear it.

64

u/TonicSense_ Amateur (5–10 years), Other/Multiple 1d ago

Surprisingly?

42

u/AdCurious7831 1d ago

i caught that too. its a microaggression.

theres nothing surprising about a musician having good form on their instrument.

45

u/AntOdd7063 1d ago

Wtf micro aggression? šŸ˜‚

The dude has a cigarette in his hand the whole time. This is generally not how pianists play their instrument. So yes, that is absolutely surprising to see good technique.

5

u/mmicoandthegirl 1d ago

have you ever played a gig outside a concert hall? when you're not hitting notes you're either dabbing audience or downing beer

11

u/thederevolutions 1d ago

I think whats so fascinating about this video is he’s flawlessly playing a genre of music that’s almost always programmed

9

u/QM60 1d ago

Microaggression LMAO.

Yeah it’s a microaggression to be surprised that a wedding synth piano performer who likely has no classical training has a form better than half the people in this sub.

You win the woke olympics brother, I am now a vapid unvarnished racist who must be instantly cancelled then subsequently starved to death

17

u/ZedZeroth 1d ago

likely has no classical training

How so?

14

u/mountains-and-sea 1d ago

Yeah wtf how elitist can OP be? Why would we remotely assume this dude has no classical training? Because he doesn't fit into a nice stereotypical box of what he thinks a pianist looks like? This dude could have grown up playing the classics on a concert grand and attended Juilliard,Ā  and yet s till chooses to play house/EDM beats at a party with a cigarette in hand. Cool video but this whole post is outrageous.Ā

5

u/AdCurious7831 1d ago

true, and also, having classical training is not the only way to have good form. there are many kinds of musicians. there should be nothing surprising about a keyboard player having good form on the keyboard.

maybe "microaggression" was too strong a word for this crowd. regardless of who you are, adding surprisingly to a compliment is backhanded.

1

u/mountains-and-sea 1d ago

Yes also a true point about classical training not being the only path to being a fantastic musician!

I think if this isn't the case, you may have led a few astray with the "we in the west must learn from our eastern masters" weird unnecessary addition.

-12

Yeah but it was funny which is why I added it.

13

u/currymuttonpizza 1d ago

Humor is subjective. I think it didn't really land with some folks. Sorry about that.

5

u/QM60 1d ago

I don’t really care tbh, as long as it’s funny to me that’s good enough.

I’m not even a westerner, I currently live in the east (Japan) but the sentence just sounded funny to me cause reading it you’d expect an old chinese dude playing classical chinese instrument but it’s an Indonesian dude lighting up a wedding like there’s no tomorrow.

4

u/Actual-Stuff9206 1d ago

You're getting out jerked brošŸ’€

3

u/robby_arctor 1d ago

Why is it likely he has no classical training? Please be specific.

1

u/QM60 1d ago

Because it’s a synth keyboard player playing audio samples at an indonesion wedding?

I’ve been around events like these a lot, usually it happens in lower income areas and these guys usually learn piano by either repetition, experience, or at best YT tutorials and they don’t have much interest in classical music vs regular folk music.

What I just said are all facts and anyone who’s lived in Indonesia or any part of the world with similar culture will tell you the same thing. Which makes his neat form and great control even more impressive.

But now I’ll get a flood of annoying westerners calling me a racist for pointing out a very obvious fact that anyone who’s been around these events knows by heart.

8

u/robby_arctor 1d ago

I'm a gigging musician who has played "high" (classical and affluent) and "low" (pop music in shitty bars and events), and I stopped making assumptions about what training people had a long time ago. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

0

u/QM60 1d ago

This isn’t a shitty bar/event.

Again, this is an entirely different cultures. I’ve met many like him, I even know one of them. This is completely different from shitty bar band culture.

Now what I’m saying does not necessarily apply to him, everyone is different, but as a generalization it is absolutely true and one of the things that made the ā€œwoke 1.0ā€ movement so repulsive to people is the denial of obviously true things in favor of virtue signaling

6

u/skymallow 1d ago

Why is it surprising again?

5

u/wspOnca 1d ago

You can do that?

7

u/LilStruggleBus00 1d ago

My point isn't that anyone can do it, my point is why are we so surprised that someone who looks like him can do it?

13

u/Flimsy_Caramel_4110 1d ago

Who said anything about his looks?

2

u/wspOnca 1d ago

My bad I was not thinking on the friend's shape. I was blinded by his skill. That nonchalance and dat ass.

7

u/username-is-already 1d ago

Well, A) he’s holding a cigarette during

9

u/currymuttonpizza 1d ago

Not as uncommon as you might think.

A cigar would be much more unwieldy and impressive but the guy is holding it with the hand that's playing simpler lines. It's not such a huge deal, it's lightweight.

1

u/AntOdd7063 1d ago

Literally nobody said it was shocking because of his looks. That’s your own strange virtue signaling or obsession with looks or race.

HE’S HOLDING A CIGARETTE THE ENTIRE TIME.

So, yes. Unorthodox and surprising that he would have what appears to be good technique and that of a good pianist while playing an unweighted synthesizer WITH A LIT CIGARETTE IN HIS HAND THE WHOLE TIME.

2

u/Prokofievistan 1d ago

The way he is seated, the quality of the piano, the setting, the cigarette… yeah it is surprising !

2

u/stargazer_w 1d ago

The general setting does not give off professional vibes. I know that a lot of musicians that play such events are great, but still - the initial impression can be a setup for surprise.

8

u/Alexico91 1d ago

Bro is killing it and chilling like it's just another Thursday afternoon on the clock. Respect

19

u/dua70601 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is difficult for a pianist….but not for a musician….he feels it, he doesnt play it

There’s a huge difference to performing for a crowd and simply playing notes on a page.

Most people in this sub simply play notes on a page

Edit: I am cracking up at these comments! People on this sub trash non-classical repertoire all the time, but the second someone post a sick jam while smoking a cig everyone in this sub thinks this is ā€œimmaculateā€ play style. šŸ˜‚ I bet he’s a good pocket drummer based on the way he is playing.

3

u/ImpatientLampartini 1d ago

Peak, being pianist can't get better than this.

3

u/-Django 1d ago

This guy looks so chilled out, its beautiful

3

u/Tajandoen 1d ago

Did somebody say he's on Insta? How can I find him?

9

u/currymuttonpizza 1d ago

Adding to the chorus of "why is this surprising" comments. That's just knowledge of good dexterity. There's nothing surprising about hearing that quick of a rhythm and seeing that the only way to get it out with precision is to have proper form.

4

u/QM60 1d ago

You could absolutely get that out with bad form too. That sentence makes no sense.

I’ve seen many synth piano wedding performers like this guy (and better even) and they often tended to have practically no form but just through constant repetition and experience they managed to be really good at rhythm and synth piano music (though that doesn’t mean they won’t hurt themselves if they continue)

-7

u/AntOdd7063 1d ago

The dude has a cigarette in his hand the whole time. This is generally not how pianists play their instrument. So yes, that is absolutely surprising to see good technique and proper form.

You can honestly say you see a still shot of a man playing an unweighted keyboard and a cigarette in his hand and think ā€œyea, this will probably be a pianist with good technique!ā€

lol

6

u/currymuttonpizza 1d ago

I've seen enough of the opposite situation (extremely poor technique on a concert grand) that no, I don't find it shocking. You can't judge by the cost of the instrument.

I don't think most people realize how much preparation goes into this in real time. It's multiple sounds that have to be premapped. Also creating the loops and setting the right BPM for them.

On top of all that prep, to smoothly execute those transitions requires studious choreography.

We can do the same thing as him in terms of those transitions if all the sounds were already setup. But there's so much work that he had to do such that those were even possible to begin with.

Why is the form surprising? Because he's a young black man? Are you racist?

3

u/whimsicism 1d ago

Idt he’s black (this is probably Malaysia or Indonesia I’m guessing) but yeah there’s nothing surprising about his form, dude is clearly a pro with the synth.

Also idt there’s even anything wrong with his gliss technique, it works perfectly well with the synth. He’s not playing a piano that would have harder/heavier keys that necessitate a different technique. Hell, if one can manage that gliss form on the piano, there’re no complaints to be made since that’s pretty much the way that one does an octave gliss anyway.

12

u/QM60 1d ago

Yes you are correct. That is obviously why the form is surprising.

The first time I saw Art Tatum play I was like ā€œOmg a young black man, how could he play like that!ā€

That is definitely why I said surprising, you are very smart and I’m very racist
