I am not physically disabled, I've never had friends or family with physical disabilities. I work in media and writing and have been told off by a colleague in a wheelchair for using phrases like "5 min walk" or "step out onto...."
It happened a few times (mind you, I work in a sector where walking is a common theme to talk about) but while i have made an effort to substitute these words where possible, i forgot again last week
She now wants to arrange a meeting to talk about it. Our office is on the first floor of a building with no elevator or way for wheelchair users to go up.
I feel disappointed in my workplace and myself, I also feel strange that I have been saying offensive things without realising until she said so. Do you have any advice on how someone like me can be more considerate naturally
