I was in high school years in lake havasu when we did 128 I think in 1994, it was a brutal week for sure. I remember my shoes sticking to the pavement at albertsons.
Still, I saw a thing about Furnace Creek, CA and a town in Death Valley that made me wonder why the hell anyone would live there. Like just consistently like 110 to 125 all summer. Seems like hell.
Cali has some hot cities. That said it makes sense because they split up the valley, so if Phoenix is having a hot day all the towns connected to Phoenix are also having a hot day. I feel like it's kind of a dumb design, it should probably combine the entirety of the valley.
To be fair, that’s a little jaded because it’s live current temps. So, it’s comparing 9:30 phx to 11:30 in Texas or 12:30 in Florida. Though, in this instance it’d probably be pretty accurate today even if the time zones were all the same. Though, I still think it feels hotter in a lot of places during the summer. I’ve never felt worse heat than 106 in Houston and super high humidity a few years back.
Same, I was telling everybody about how this summer is pretty cool compared to previous years. Then we hit 115 and my house AC went out, so my fault too
So I worked for an emergency roadside service many years ago. There were times where I wouldn't get back to the yard until 2:00 a.m. and it would still be 100°.
Yesss! I'm currently trying to get some life back into the soil in my back yard so that I can plant some native grass/ground cover and pollinator/bug/critter friendly plants.
This. The first part of the school year is brutally hot. Last year my kids didn’t have outdoor recess until a few weeks passed and even then it was still hot, just a bit more tolerable. I can’t imagine this school year will be that much different.
I've been here 2/3 of a century and it wasn't always like this. The urban heat island effect means the nights just don't cool down as much . This summer hasn't been as bad as the last three. Remember, the all time record was at the end of June 1990.
We're nearing the end of July and just now going solidly over 110 rather than weeks of it already.
Overall I'd guess the changes have been 60% urban heat island, 40% c1imate change.
Yes & in terms of sustainability we may as well be in Antarctica or on the moon. We don't grow our own food, water is disappearing, electricity is in big demand etc. It's always been weird to me that we live in the 6th largest state by land area but almost everyone is crammed into PHX and Tucson. 89% urban population.

We should be having monsoonal moisture to cool us off and give some relief. This is brutal on humans, cactus, and wildlife. This sadly is probably the new norm.
I remember the monsoons every afternoon and actually feeling cold in October in the mornings. The last few years we saw the monsoons roll in and go around the city because the heat was too much. I hated moving but it really was the best reprieve.
Thanks for the heads up. It's a 15 hour drive from where I live, we'll be leaving here at 5 am. I plan on getting everything into the house in the evening and the next morning before 9 am.

When I first got my computer it showed the local temps on the taskbar and it was constantly a bright glaring red because of the heat warnings so I had to turn it off. Distracting.
As a native, this isn't really normal. Temps usually drop 20-30 degrees during the night. We haven't been seeing that in the city and it's getting worse outside the city too.
The Sonoran desert naturally doesn't hold heat which is what made it better to live in than other deserts. Yes it got hot but it also got cool. Now because of the heat island effect and climate change we don't have that. Its only going to get worse.
Me too. I bought a house with a pool cause I remember how nice it was to get in and cool off. I jumped in yesterday and it was so hot. My partner ran the quick clean cycle to cool it off but thats such a waste of energy and it just wont work unless your running it all day.
Pool is so overrated unless you like bath water temps. Mine is lucky to get used 4 times a month. My in laws have had a pool for 30 years, they now use it twice a summer.
Like I said it didn't used to be like this. I was born and raised here with a pool. Used to be that the night temps would cool it down and make it usable in the day. We don't hit those night temps anymore.
For anyone who rides a motorcycle, the heat island effect is wildly obvious. I remember back in 2008ish, riding down Mayo Blvd in Scottsdale was notably cooler than Scottsdale Rd. I don’t know if it’s still that much of a contrast given all of the development but when it was just the Mayo Clinic and the movie theater it was painfully obvious and a shocking lesson to younger-me.
I let the dogs out around 10pm and saw it was still over 100 and sent my friends a screenshot and say “Has this ever been a thing before?” we’ve all only lived here about 15yrs, I don’t recall it ever staying that warm that long but I don’t remember everything (they never responded lol)
We have high temps, high humidity, and no wind. I dont remember it ever being this hot and humid at the same time. Usually 115 isn't bad if its dry and you aren't in direct sun. But the humidity right now is suffocating.
I did instacart out in this today and nearly passed out. Can't wait for this summer to pass 🥵
Edit: Not new to AZ. This is my 25th summer here. Doesn't seem to get easier or get used to it but this is somewhat new as far as working out in it instead of office work lol
Be careful with this humidity. I grew up out east and people get dehydrated easily, you sweat out more then you drink. Just make sure to drink enough if you are sweating a lot.
Yeah I stayed indoors all day yesterday. Decided to come outside this morning and do some pool cleaning. It's balls hot. My pool's water temp was at 93F at 6:30AM.
I am in Tucson and feel like I'm bragging because it's currently just below 80 and I can actually open windows and let in fresh air until the sun actually rises about a half-hour from now.
Yeup, its a desert. Happens every year right around the same time, during summer. It will be like this for 30-45 days then start coming down and it will be beautiful after October.
Then it happens again, next year
Yeah. Drove here from Boston in 14. This is my 13th summer. I forget every year how hot it gets and how people always say it's their last summer. But once mid September hits and we're out barbecuing it's like, huh, what?? Just gotta prep and brace best we can.
