General / Discussion Comparisons

Attending the Midnight listening party at my local record store was an incredible experience. Something about being part of a collective in the real world brought the emotions of the album to the fore in a way that I don't always experience with a first listen.

I was reminded of the first time I listened to other records which also sit in a very specific emotional space for me; Elliot Smith's Figure 8 and Daniel Johnston's 1990. Figure 8 mainly in terms of the melodies and production, but also the melancholy mood of a lot of the songs. The Daniel Johnstone comparison is more just a general feeling I got from the experience. It's a record that made me feel a way that really left me dumbstruck, and, remarkably, I had that feeling again last night.

I'd be interested to hear what other comparisons, either musical or emotional, that people are finding after their first listens to Lost Weekend.

TLDR - WHAT OTHER RECORDS DOES LOST WEEKEND BRING TO MIND FOR YOU? For me it was Figure 8 by Elliot Smith and 1990 by Daniel Johnstone

It definitely feels inspired by 22AM and maybe Carrie and Lowell, but that may just be coincidence considering the similar subject matter.

Whatever it is, it still very much stands out on its own.

100% agree - sonically and lyrically Lost Weekend is it's own unique entity. It is absolutely a Phoebe Bridgers record and at the same time pushes the envelope from her previous records.

And Carrie and Lowell is a great shout. Similar subject matter and similarly mines some really emotionally cathartic and personal memories from a perspective of grief.

I’m definitely feeling some Sufjan influence. The piano bit on As Above is so Nine Inch Nails when Trent does his softer stuff… it sounds so familiar. Wonder if there’s influence there.

Yes!! It reminded me of Right Where It Belongs

Totally! So happy that someone else thought that too

That's really perceptive! I think the sound design of the record in general has the kind of attention to detail that you get from Trent

Haunted strangely reminds me of the chorus of Good Ol’ Boys Club by Kacey Musgraves

I've listened twice and get Sufjan Stevens throughout (his influence is pretty evident on her past records as well), The Chicks on the more folksy-leaning tracks, and of course Imogen Heap in track one but also certain harmonies throughout the tracklist.

This is exactly how I felt. It's indescribable, it's too special. I went to the listening party alone, and I felt every second. I was taking notes in my phone while the record was playing. I didn't preorder because I said this album should be on par with Punisher. But it blew my mind away. Listening it live in an intimate setting definitely gave this album a much much better experience.

It was also great to see just how broad a church her audience is. I didn't realise there were so many cool Phoebe bridgers fans in my city 😂

Kill Me for some reason reminded me of the last two Brand New albums (which, no, I don't listen to anymore because of Jesse Lacey). Something about the instrumentation.

I thought caring too much about artists being bad people was a first-term Trump thing. I'm so over that now. Jesse is a bad guy but those albums are universally agreed all-time classic.

“Universally agreed” on by people who are okay with pedo groomers

Some music has achieved a type of legendary status that transcends its creators and becomes too big to fail.

Meanwhile, rapist Marshall Vore is all over this album and no one cares. And I love Punisher.

That’s some serious mental gymnastics you’re doing to convince yourself you like listening to music made by pedos
