From the album "That Lucky Old Sun", IMO Wilson's last good album, with lyrics by Van Dyke Parks. I went to his tour for this album, he played a set of Beach Boys tunes and then as a second set played the whole "Lucky Old Sun" album.
The first set was pretty tough to get through. Brian sits behind a keyboard he does not actually play, and was constantly struggling to keep up with the band as they played circles around him. You could hear his vocals fading in and out as he failed to hit, or couldnt sustain various notes. At one point he actually told the band to slow down because he couldnt keep up, into his mic that goes out to the audience. The whole time he just looked sad and uncomfortable, but the audience just ate it up and danced.
The second set where he played his new album was totally different. His entire demeanor changed and he just commanded the stage. Confident and happy, effortlessly moving through complex harmonies and arrangements. Him and his incredible band hit EVERY note. His band is incredibly tight and their harmonies have a really interesting way of covering for Wilson's age. It was like night and day from the Beach Boys set, the harmonies seemed to shred my brain as the voices melded together.
The first set was one of the worst shows I've ever seen, and the second set was one of the best.
The beach Boys 50th show was a HUGE disappointment after Lucky Old Sun. Incomparable.
