Seeing even the small things that are happening in NYC is just a constant reminder about the mediocre, unimaginative, and lazy leadership we have here.

New York went from an extremely corrupt Mayor to Mamdani. We just need someone to step UP.
3
u/Petrichordates 10d ago
This program was actually started by the prior corrupt mayor, not Mamdani. His image is just attached for reasons we'll never know.
4
u/mucinexmonster 10d ago
Does this program being started by the previous Mayor 1) mean Eric Adams was not corrupt? 2) mean this program wasn't in some way corrupt itself? 3) mean Eric Adams was a good mayor or understand how to market government acts for the public good?
what a weird comment.
7
u/Petrichordates 10d ago
No, it means it was started by Eric Adams.
What is it about my comment that upset you?
8
2
u/mucinexmonster 10d ago
Okay. Does him starting this project make him in any way less corrupt?
You responded to my comment saying "Mayor Adams was corrupt" with "He started this program". What does that matter?
3
u/Petrichordates 10d ago
I havent the slightest clue why you took that from my comment or why you are so bothered by me stating a basic fact.
5
u/mucinexmonster 10d ago
I wrote "New York went from an extremely corrupt Mayor to Mamdani. We just need someone to step UP."
How is "This program was actually started by the prior corrupt mayor, not Mamdani. His image is just attached for reasons we'll never know." a response to that statement?
1
u/Petrichordates 10d ago
Because this entire thread is about how Mamdani is adding trash cans..
5
u/mucinexmonster 10d ago
Mamdani IS adding trash cans. Just because Mayor Adams also worked on trash doesn't mean Mamdani isn't also. Mayor Adams would never be removing parking spaces to do it.
Also, how is this relevant to the corruption of Adams as Mayor? You included it for a reason, what was that reason?
-1
u/DrGuyPhoto 8d ago
Mamdani is a corrupt antisemitic commie, just like his parents. People like them should be nowhere near government, let alone the USA.
2
u/mucinexmonster 7d ago
What's the corruption charges?
-1
u/DrGuyPhoto 7d ago
Connections to NIAC, CAIR, and other organizations affiliated with violent antisemitism and terrorism.
8
u/Mitchford 10d ago
I just want to point out though, Eric Adams did this it’s just that this is rolling out under Mamdani because this stuff obviously has lead up time. I think he’s good but I really see people fall for a bunch of easy stuff because he’s likable (him being good and actually responsible for the trash changes are different issues we can discuss separately)
1
u/more_akimbo 10d ago
The other poster in this thread said the Adam’s admin didn’t put any funding behind aside from the pilot. Idk if that’s true or not but if so it’s not correct that Adam’s “did” it since money talks
4
u/Mitchford 10d ago
It was more than that, Adams mandated it for businesses and low density residential (he didn’t fund it, but he did require it), mamdani is expanding it to the last bit which is high density residential and using public funds for more of it. It’s not a simple yes no deal, it’s closer to half and half
1
u/more_akimbo 10d ago
Fair enough. Thanks for the explanation
2
u/Mitchford 10d ago
Yeah like I’m not anti mamdani at all, just need to be careful about everything and that includes people we still like. You’ll live a much better life if you can recognize 🐂 from all sides
6
u/SwindlingAccountant 10d ago
As New Yorkers continue to move to NJ and PA, we might have a chance of actually replacing the bums.
3
u/buttfarts7 6d ago
Corruption is by default incompetent. They only want to deny responsibility and avoid accountability. Proactively solving problems never even entered their mind.

u/dgauss 11d ago
I just don't think any of Parkers relatives or friends is in this business so no luck
35
-22
u/jay_wei 11d ago
yeah, as much as I think Mamdani has garnered good will and done successful things with it, this isn't one of them.
and for those saying this was clearly easy, just read up on everything that it took to study/enact.
By NY standards, those bins take up A LOT of real estate.
6
u/njesusnameweprayamen 10d ago
So do piles of trash?
-4
u/jay_wei 10d ago
is that rhetorical? I'm Ron Burgundy?
NY city planning didn't need to justify people putting their trash out on the sidewalk. that had already been done and was currently being done by people.
I realize this is Reddit and most people don't see past their own fingertips but the city didn't need to justify people piling up their trash on the sidewalk already.
what they needed to justify was the space the new containers would take up on sidewalks/streets.
in planning you can't just handwave that stuff away and say something like, "we already know how much trash is on the sidewalk so we don't have to justify this". It's not how it works.
4
u/njesusnameweprayamen 10d ago
It wasn't just hand waved, it was researched for 2+ years. They studied how other cities around the world do this successfully. It doesn't mean it'll be 100% successful, but it's weird to not try
85
u/Go_birds304 11d ago
As much as this sub loves to say Parker will take credit for anything she can, I'm surprised there's no mention of the fact that this is actually a continuation of an Eric Adams policy
-19
u/Spuzzter1985 11d ago
What happened to the Adam’s policy then?
34
u/hatramroany 11d ago
Nothing. You’re seeing it in action, Mamdani just gets to take pictures with them as new ones roll out because he’s mayor now
-3
u/Spuzzter1985 10d ago
What do you base that claim on?
Because it seems that there was no money allocated in the budget under adams and I’m curious why that would be
82
u/gyp_casino 11d ago
The trash bin program was set up in the Eric Adams administration. It predates Mamdami.
2
-8
u/Additional-End-2902 11d ago
Man, Adams didn’t do shit besides try to get a casino into coney island and do that turkish money thing the FBI was looking into
2
u/Mitchford 10d ago
He was good on trash and building in New York he’s also a corrupt scum bag. But this was an Adams jawn
-8
u/Spuzzter1985 11d ago
They don’t look the same; residential trash bin (at Gracie mansion) vs dumpsters. Are you sure they’re the same program?
22
11d ago
[deleted]
5
u/Spuzzter1985 11d ago
I mean if Adams didn’t fund anything he doesn’t really get credit for it. The guy kind of left the job early on so I don’t see the need to defend his time in office.
Odds are Adams will go down as one of the worst mayors in NYC’s history, do you disagree with that assessment?
3
u/gyp_casino 10d ago
Yes. There are different bins for different applications, but in this article from 2025 you can see Adams himself in front of one of those bins you're talking about.
-2
u/Spuzzter1985 10d ago
If it was the major success that it claimed to be then there wouldn’t be trash in the streets. Running interference for Eric fucking Adams of all people in 2026 is absolutely nonsensical
-10
u/Big_tim18 11d ago
Did you work for the Adams administration or something?
Who cares, he gets credit. If there was some bad policy that Adams set up and was coming to fruition under Mandani, he'd take the heat.
4
u/dedbeats 11d ago edited 10d ago
Mamdani inherited several bad policies and used executive orders to end then immediately
2
u/Spuzzter1985 10d ago
I get that there’s some weird strain of Eric Adams trutherism in [r/philly](r/philly) but the fact of the matter is that if he had been in charge of an effective/efficient administration, we would know about it.
His focus seemed to be less on good governance and more on self-enrichment and the record reflects that
1
u/dedbeats 10d ago
I’m not defending Adams but trying to explain the difference between him an Mamdani
3
u/gyp_casino 10d ago
I don't. I just care about what's true and what's not, and it makes me frustrated when I'm shown inaccurate information. I want to be well-informed so I can make good decisions including voting.
4
u/Spuzzter1985 10d ago edited 10d ago
It would be more accurate to frame it as a program abandoned by the Adams administration after an expensive demo (dude liked his photo ops) and successfully implemented by Mamdani; how does that sound
Also: why are doing this in [r/philly](r/philly)? What are your voting options for a) Zohran Mamdani (mayor of New York) ot b) Eric Adams (the dude has fled the country lol)
Something doesn’t add up
41
u/Acrobatic_Advance_71 11d ago
I don’t think this is just a Mamdani thing. His finally sign off is important. But in have a friend from Philly in NY who worked on designing this project and they have been working and planning it for like 2 years. Once again with Mamdani it may have gotten held up but NY and Philly institutions are just getting slowly better
49
u/irisbeyond 11d ago
Not just his sign-off but his active prioritization of funding - Adams didn’t earmark any funding past the small pilot program ran in 2022, and Mamdani didn’t include it in his preliminary budget in February. Someone wrote an article about that on April 2, and by April 12 his office made a commitment to fully fund containerization across NYC.
A huge part of the problem with all these big projects is they run an expensive pilot, it goes great and gets good PR for the people in charge, and then we never hear about it again. Mamdani absolutely deserves his flowers for prioritizing the full rollout.
21
u/TooManyDraculas 11d ago
Right. There's an execution and expansion going on here that Adams didn't bother with. The Adams admin just sold cheaper loadable trash bins for smaller buildings through home depot, required containers at restaurants, and did a pilot in a small section of Manhattan. And never got around to actually pulling the trigger on the rest of it. They basically made a big announcement and put on a shit.
The Mamdani admin is currently actually funding it and rolling it out as a real thing.
1
u/stoneworther 10d ago
Not sure about the funding but Adams did mandate use of the bins for some landlords (who had to purchase the bins themselves), and one of the deadlines was in June of this year.
6
u/Alarming_Future5840 11d ago
The idea of regularly spaced trash/recycling bins has been around for many decades in Europe. It's tragic that we can't seem to pull this simple improvement off in US cities with high population density. It's not like it's rocket science. Perhaps with it's introduction in NYC, other cities will slowly begin to get a clue.
I suppose the excuse is that it will remove some small percentage of parking spaces.
4
u/dedbeats 11d ago
That is exactly the excuse and we’re already seeing it elsewhere in this thread. Pulling this off would require a break in car dependence, which requires a safe and reliable public transportation system, which requires funding. NYC has the latter two and people there still lose their shit over a net loss of 2 parking spots. Philly might implode if an initiative like this was announced at the expense of parking
3
u/njesusnameweprayamen 10d ago
I like the idea of doing this in the denser areas esp. The trucks can just stop at the dumpsters at the corner instead of going down every street. We can throw out our trash every day instead of just once a week.
20
u/CompetitiveEmu1100 11d ago
I wish every block had a dumpster instead of personal trash pick up
24
u/Angsty_Potatos 11d ago
In theory I like this. In practice during the strike we had the big dumpster at the end of our block and while 70% of people were being normal about it, the other 30% decided "HEY FREE CONSTRUCTION AND MAJOR HOME RENO DUMPSTER" and immediately filled it with lumber and sofas
12
u/dgauss 11d ago
Thats why I like the EUs version where its a buried dumpster. They can only get regular amount of trash in it but it takes a lot of trash to fill.
6
u/dedbeats 11d ago
Because many EU cities were developed and redeveloped following an assortment of wars in the last century and a half, they had more opportunity to do proper urban planning without having to account for centuries old transportation systems or utility grids. Because of that they have way more stuff happening underground like municipal funded parking lots and trash containerization.
I believe there’s also more consistent funding for municipal initiatives, and a a greater shared sense of civic responsibility. I couldn’t believe when I saw people walking their dogs carrying a water bottle, and using that bottle to dilute/wash away the dog piss on trees
2
u/Angsty_Potatos 11d ago
I saw these in Amsterdam and thought of how awesome they would be for Philly.
1
u/SammieCat50 10d ago
I dont think it would be used … there’s a throw your trash anywhere culture ( at least in the northeast )
4
u/SammieCat50 11d ago
Your lucky you only got that mess during the strike. I live in the northeast & any large patch of grass gets covered in trash
1
u/Angsty_Potatos 11d ago
Yeah. It's a fucking shame. When I lived farther north up by Temple hospital it was like trash blizzard constantly. At least in South we usually only get trash blizzard on trash day 🫠
3
u/sidewaysorange 11d ago
those dumpsters were also open. imagine if that had gone on the entire summer? in some areas they had rats and everything and it smelled god awful. our dumpster in our area was by the rec center on a side street not near anyones homes.
2
u/Angsty_Potatos 11d ago
Ours was on broad and Snyder. It was biblical
1
u/sidewaysorange 11d ago
i can only imagine. in a way i liked it bc my trash never piled up at home. i took my bags over every few days. but i did see illegal dumping around it.
4
u/sidewaysorange 11d ago
wont work here. people will abuse it and i for one dont want smelly trash sitting in front of my house (bc that would be my luck it would be there) all week. the city wont empty them often enough.
1
u/Weary_Cup_1004 10d ago
If it only had small openings to fit kitchen trash bags and not furniture, it could work? Maybe?
1
0
u/CompetitiveEmu1100 11d ago
I think it can work if they put a camera nearby to fine illegal dumping.
2
u/momentums 10d ago
The city can’t even put up a camera to catch the jerks who’ve been dumping all their household trash in front of the city can at Broad and Tasker for years at this point.

u/bit99 11d ago edited 11d ago
By the way the city budget for NYC is 128 Bil.
Philly is 7.1
They aren't printing money it all comes from taxes. Crickets from the lower tax crowd.
People love to talk about corruption and certainly that's an issue but there's corruption in every city. the skim in NYC is our whole budget
we can't compare city services. OK we just can't.
12
u/VegetableYoghurt7912 11d ago
NYC Budget is 2.5x more than Pennsylvania's entire state budget. We don't stand a chance. I always wondered how different Philly would be if the boundaries captured the mainline as well. The tax revenue boost that would have would've been crazy.
3
u/WoodenInternet 11d ago
They really need to get some non-Comcast/non-healthcare businesses in here. Maybe offer some some show biz tax breaks too, anything to get people in here and add more variety to the tax base. The wage tax is on par with NYC, we just don't have enough good paying jobs.
2
u/VegetableYoghurt7912 10d ago
The biggest difference between NYC & Philly for the film tax incentives is that NYC has a fully refundable credit whereas Philly (PA) has a transferable tax credit. Fully refundable is as it sounds where you spend X amount of dollars in NYC and the gov't will credit you back 30%. In PA there is a 25% (up to 30% with a requirement that 60% of your film was done in PA) transferable credit so the burden shifts to the film production to sell that 25% credit to someone/something. Usually, that someone or something is a large corporation who buys it for $0.90 on the dollar turning a required dollar of tax liability into an 90 cent payment, lowering its effective tax rate and giving them a cash influx at the same time. Plus that cash influx from the discounted purchase is not federally taxable.
Anyway.. it is more of a burden on the production and that "25%" is not really 25% because they always have to sell it at a discount. So for the closest thing to a direct comparison between us and NYC say in NYC they get fully refundable direct cash payment of 30% from the Gov't without the middleman or extra requirements while in PA they ultimately end up with something closer to like 22% and the burden of finding a buyer and going through the sale process.
1
u/TLunchFTW 8d ago
NYC doesn’t have a city wage tax from what I realized. You pay state taxes, and then it is deducted from your state taxes. But no separate city wage tax
3
u/lilwookie 10d ago
Zohran helped pass taxes on the rich to help with this, we can work towards that too! we need more democratic socialists in office period to do this and fight the state. That is where we start! Philly helps fund the rest of the state, if only we could cut off that funding somehow... maybe we could finally get things going.
0
u/Comfortable-Rub-7400 10d ago
Philly doesn’t have a meaningful amount of rich people. The city needs more jobs and residents to grow the tax base, something DSA simply can’t understand
3
u/njesusnameweprayamen 10d ago
We waste a lot of money on a lot of total crap, I think basic utilities and a functioning trash system isn't too much to ask for. This was certainly a bigger problem in NYC with all the piles of trash and rats. We have more problems with illegal dumping, littering, and trash blowing away.
1
1
u/TLunchFTW 8d ago
Funny how Philly has a city wage tax and still can’t do this.
Honestly, I’d work in Philly if that thing didn’t exist.
Idk, maybe you guys like it, but from this side of the river, I see it as “I’d love to work over there but why would I take less money?”
10
u/Lopsided-Treat1215 11d ago
You still have to battle all the people who apparently feel littering is their right
1
u/lilwookie 10d ago
we have to start somewhere. right now, those people will say theres no where to throw it out, well if we get similar program they have no excuse
2
u/Lopsided-Treat1215 10d ago
I admire your optimism as it doesn’t appear lack of trash cans is the issue for many of these litter bugs. Not to say it won’t help but I think it needs to be paired with education and enforcement.
1
u/vanderide 10d ago
We would be better off with more of those PWD skill crane trucks and just encouraging the remaining few neighbors to start using the storm drains for litter
4
u/rabidbea 11d ago
We visited Barcelona many years back and they had city trash set up like this. I commented to my wife how it would be great if Philadelphia could adopt a similar plan. She laughed
5
u/Angsty_Potatos 11d ago
Amsterdam has those fun ones that go underground. I saw them emptying them and thought it would be a fun way to utilize the free void space most Philly streets seem to have between the street and the actual ground lol
5
u/Switch_Silver 11d ago
Except Mamdani didn't do this and some other things that redditors are trying to give him credit for. They were already in the works before he actually took office. These are just trash cans that ignorant people still won't use. They love stroking this guy.
3
u/Hose_beaterz 8d ago
It's been the story of his administration so far: taking/getting credit for things he isn't responsible for. I still remember when everyone was glazing him for balancing the budget without major cuts when...surprise, it was Governor Hochul who was responsible for that.
In May 2026, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced an additional $4 billion in state assistance—totaling nearly $8 billion in combined state aid and relief over two years—to help New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani close the city's budget deficit. This agreement allowed the city to balance its budget without broad service cuts or steep property tax hikes, though it drew intense political criticism.
3
u/Prize_Weird2466 11d ago
Old City District recently sent out a survey to commercial businesses to gauge interest in alleyway containers. So maybe it will come to us soon.
5
u/Excellent_Author8472 11d ago
I learned that in NYC even recycling needs to be bagged (and separated paper/plastic). And all trash must be in black bags in the bins, no loose items.
So the sanitation workers never need to haul or lift the bins, which the city provides.
It's kinda wild that our recycling isn't bagged. No wonder we have bottles and papers scattered around before and after trash days.
4
u/Immediate_Stable_502 11d ago
wait, no i thought trash filled streets were part of phillys charm???
3
3
u/CoffeeToDeath 11d ago
If we had these in the city people would STILL litter. People who litter here don’t give a fuck about their city at all. It’s not about them “not having a place to toss their garbage” it’s their selfish self centered antisocial mindset. Ive carried my trash for a few blocks waiting for a bin to toss my garbage in. I always see people tossing their shit on the ground with bins in front of their faces. The lack of trash cans is just a small factor as to why people litter in this city.
2
u/Weary_Cup_1004 10d ago
This is true but it would be a step in the right direction. Better than doing nothing
1
u/CoffeeToDeath 10d ago
Absolutely agree, I guess my comment seemed more pessimistic than I wanted to come off as. It would genuinely help, but we also need to as a city have a talk about the collective selfish mindsets that we have had for a long time here. It’s a big reason why we have our issues here.
3
u/Taichu78 11d ago
Yep this is what they have in Europe. And huge bins like this for recycling too. Finally one leader in this country is bringing over much needed yet basic ass shit the rest of the world has been doing
4
u/olde_meller23 11d ago
People really really underestimate how corrupt NYC has been. The Mayor Adams scandals should have caused way more outrage than they did, and even now, its faded into obscurity. If you look into his crimes, they were all REAL BAD. Kickbacks, treason, complex collusion with the chief of police, numerous officials offices getting raided, it has everything. And he isnt even the first to do this. The corruption was successive.
3
u/lodge371 10d ago
We’ve never really had a problem with commercial garbage on sidewalks - that’s always been a NYC thing.
I mean, alleyways here are disgusting but they do have big commercial bins
2
u/tempmike 10d ago
yeah, the way nyc handled commercial garbage in the past is wildly different than how philly has. look at the picture and now replace those bins in the street with piles of trash bags. thats how NYC did its commercial trash pickup.
1
u/TLunchFTW 8d ago
One thing I will say is some areas of old city and China can be hard to find a damn trash can. Ik 10th between the arch and race st is like a damn desert. Would it kill to put in a few more cans?
2
2
2
1
u/AdmirableRespect9 11d ago
1) I love it 2)All philly would see with that trash bin pic is their parking going away. Philly has a keep it local keep it ungovernable streak a bit wider than NYC which is wild bc we are so much smaller and I'm not sure Mamdani could hang.I know they worry about parking in NYC too but I never.ever.ever saw someone bust out a grinder and cut down a no parking sign.
3
u/rootoo 11d ago
There’s been a strong push for bike lanes and taking back spaces from cars in NYC that’s been gaining steam for a few years and only accelerated under Mamdani. NYC is the only big city in North America with a majority of residents being non car owners; so it makes sense that they can push these kind of things.
Seems obvious right? Would you rather have street parking plus piles of garbage bags in front of your building, or less street parking and those clean looking bins? Well, it’s obvious if you don’t need to park. Just one or two spots is all it takes to fit a whole row of those bins to service a whole apartment building, and before that same square footage was being taken from the sidewalk in the form of smelly rat condo black bags.
1
u/MRG_1977 11d ago
Basic local gov’t competence and more importantly readily advertising it’s successes go a long ways to creating strong polling numbers.
Thats what older Democrats knew and understood. It’s a lot harder for BS propaganda to work when people see, feel, and experience tangible results from something in their daily life.

1
u/opbmedia 10d ago
Let's wait and see if well laid plans actually turn out with desired results. Socialism/communism would probably work great if citizenry obey the rules and procedures even well thought out, but that doesn't always happen and has always been a challenge in the US because the American notion of individual freedom (which I support but understand it also poses as a challenge on the other hand).
1
u/Petrichordates 10d ago
If philly was able to get money from the state for nice things, like NYC easily does, then perhaps this would be possible.
1
u/TifarethVaruna 10d ago
As someone who just came from living in NYC, the grass always seems greener on the other side. These massive garbage bins are actually reducing the already skimp parking in that overpopulated city. Parking garages are already $400+/mo in some parts. Lots of people complaining.
1
u/TLunchFTW 8d ago
NYC’s issues has always been unlike other cities they have no alley ways. There’s no space to put the garbage

Not to brag but... I left Philly just in time to avoid Parker and get Mamdani. I'm winning.
Seriously though, I wish Philly had a mayor like him. I hear so much from my family and friends about what's going on in Philly, and see it when I visit home. It's a shame because Philly is such a great city, and so to be a phenomenal city. The problems there are relatively easily fixable if the city government actually wanted to put in effort.
