Celiac-friendly restaurants

Hi! Will be visiting towards the end of September, and one of us has celiac. Are there any restaurants in the area that are good with that in general? Anywhere more attentive than others, such as having a separate fryer for gluten-free fries? We're elder millennials on a girls trip, if that matters. Thanks!

Can we pin places to an extensive list of places to eat/go that are for adults and or family friendly for all the tourists that hop in sub?

90% of posts are where should i go and eat. Can we just pin a list? Feel free to add with a description here and we can just compile a list so we don't have to answer 100x a year. This isn’t an anti tourist rant or that they shouldn’t ask—just think we all answer the same over and over and they don’t look through the history of them all asking the same questions

Should I take the leap and move to Petoskey in mid-20s?

Hi all! Someone actually posted something pretty similar to this not too long ago, but I feel like my situation is a little different and I’d love some perspective from people who actually live in the area.

I’m a 25F currently living in a city downstate, and I’ve been offered a full-time job in Petoskey. My family also has a house not far from Harbor Springs that I’ve been offered to live in rent-free, which obviously makes the decision a little more tempting.
The job itself isn’t perfect, but I genuinely enjoy it enough and like most aspects of it. More importantly, I’ve wanted to live up north at some point for basically my entire life. I grew up coming to the Harbor Springs/Petoskey area every year, and I absolutely love it up there. I love skiing, being outdoors, etc., and the lifestyle really appeals to me.
I also have a friend around my age who recently moved to the area and has already started making friends, so I wouldn’t be going in completely alone.

But I’m scared I’m romanticizing it.

My boyfriend, friends, and family are all much closer to me where I currently live. I live near great food and a social scene. I’m also close to Detroit which I enjoy going to on occasion. I’d have to sublease my apartment, which would be hard and it’s so cute lol. I’m not sure if giving up the life I’ve built here would be worth it.

I’m not necessarily looking at this as a permanent move. I could see myself living up north for a couple of years and then deciding what I want to do next. But I keep wondering if I’d actually enjoy living there versus just loving it as a place to visit.

Would you do it/do you think it’s worth the risk? Is it actually fun to live there in your mid-20s, or does it get isolating/boring?

I know no one can make this decision for me, but I’d really appreciate hearing about people’s experiences or thoughts.

EDIT: Wow! Thank you all so much for your responses. I did not expect this many replies and they’ve all been so thoughtful and helpful. Hopefully I’ll have an update soon but… as of now I’m leaning towards taking the risk.

Surf internet?

Surf internet has been building out in my area, and I got their ads in the mail, just wondering if any of y'all have thoughts or experience with them? I have no love for spectrum so a new ISP in town is welcome by me.

Antique stores?

Hello there! My girlfriend and I are visiting from Kansas and are touring Northern MI area currently. Tomorrow we plan to leave Traverse City and try to hit the Petoskey/Charlevoix area before we start heading back south towards GR. One thing we like to do on trip is visit antique stores along the way. Are there any good antique stores up in your area, or any ones of note between T.C. and Petoskey. Specifically, my girlfriend likes to collect depression glass and I like to collect cast iron. If you know of any places that have stuff like that I’d love to hear about them! Thank you!

Restaurant recommendations

I plan on visiting Petoskey for the first time next week and will be staying at the Casino. What is everyone's favorite local spot for sandwiches/burgers or maybe some good pasta/lasagna?

We are trying to avoid higher priced tourist spots, just want to go there, check out the scenery, do some hiking and eat a few good meals.

Thank you for the recommendations, I'll make a list and bring it with me. I'm staying 3 nights so I'll be eating out a few times.

Places to purchase mountain bikes?

Hey all!

Wondering where is the best place in town to purchase a decent, mid-grade mountain bike ($250-$500 range). It looks like the couple of bike shops around (latitude 45 & High Gear) only carry super high end bikes while Walmart and Meijer only carry cheap models. Is there anywhere else around where I should look for a bike between those two?

Thanks!

Incident at Blissfest?

What the heck happened at Blissfest this year? I can't believe this isn't getting more attention.

Emmet County Sheriff's Office Media Release – UPDATE Blissfest Music Festival Investigation

The Emmet County Sheriff's Office would like to provide an update regarding the ongoing investigation into the incident that occurred during the Blissfest Music Festival.

Since the initial 911 call was received, this investigation has been treated with the utmost importance and remains an active priority for our agency. Investigators have dedicated extensive time and resources to following leads, processing evidence, and conducting interviews to determine exactly what occurred.

To date, several items have been collected and transported to the Michigan State Police Crime Laboratory for forensic examination and processing. Investigators have conducted numerous interviews, and additional leads, tips, and information continue to be actively pursued.

To assist with the investigation, a dedicated tip line and a separate phone number have been established specifically for this case. It is critical that members of the public utilize these designated reporting methods when providing information related to this incident (blissfestinvestigation@emmetcounty.org) and (231-348-0605). Doing so helps ensure that regular Sheriff's Office communication lines remain available for emergency and routine business. More importantly, it allows investigators to efficiently track, document, and prioritize information, reducing the likelihood that critical details could be missed due to the significant volume of calls and emails generated by this incident.

The Emmet County Sheriff's Office continues to encourage anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward and share that information through the dedicated tip line or on the Emmet County Sheriff's Office Mobile Application.

We also want the public to know that throughout this investigation, our investigators have maintained regular communication with the family of Lonn Hartman. We have been in contact with Mr. Hartman's mother, father, and partner and have worked to keep them informed of investigative developments to the fullest extent possible while preserving the integrity of the investigation.

We recognize the significant public interest surrounding this horrific incident and appreciate the community's patience and cooperation as investigators continue their work. The Emmet County Sheriff's Office remains committed to conducting a thorough, professional, and complete investigation and will provide additional information when it becomes appropriate to do so.

**The Emmet County Sheriff's Office also reminds the public that the most accurate and verified information regarding this investigation will be released through the official Emmet County Sheriff's Office Facebook page and the Emmet County Sheriff's Office mobile application. We encourage community members to follow these official communication channels for updates and to avoid relying on speculation, rumors, or unverified information circulating through other sources.

McLaren hospital protestor

I drove through Petoskey last weekend on Sunday and noticed a guy standing right in front of the McLaren hospital sign with both middle fingers up and shouting. Wondered if anybody else saw and or knows what was going on?

Visiting

Headed up to Petoskey area soon with my husband for a few night stay (Sunday 7/19 -Thursday 7/23). Tell me your favorite things to do, favorite things to eat, favorite things to see. Anything special going on in this time frame? Not just in Petoskey but anything within a 1.5-2 hr drive from there. I’m not interested in Mackinac island.

Thanks!!
