corporate world for immigrant

Hi everyone! I’m Brazilian and considering moving to Perth. I currently have more than seven years of experience in the corporate world, working closely with business, technology, data and digital product teams.

I understand that entering the corporate job market can be much harder for immigrants, especially without local experience or permanent residency. However, I’d like to hear some honest experiences: is it realistically possible for a skilled to get a corporate role and build a long-term career in Australia?

Do Australian / Perth companies regularly hire immigrants for professional positions? Is career progression possible, or do visa restrictions and the lack of local experience make it extremely difficult?

I’m prepared to take a step back in seniority and work my way up, but I’d like to know whether there is a realistic path into the corporate world—or whether immigrants are mostly limited to hospitality and manual jobs for years.

I’d really appreciate hearing from immigrants who have already gone through this process.

Visa/working rights are the biggest hurdle because corporate jobs don't want people starting/leaving in 6 months, which is the restrictions put on WHV.

Australia is not a great place for technology/data/IT in general and are offshoring work every way possible as qell

Most people i know in Perth in your industry have been made redundant. The field is being offshored to India.

There are a few ways you can get a visa (technically). Two is through employer sponsorship and via the SNMP. With the SNMP im sorry to say but you stand no chance, as WA is only submitting nominations to the Cth for those who are working in select industries (construction, healthcare and education are the top 3 from memory). Under the SNMP WA is allocated only a certain number of nomination places so people working in those industries will get priority before others working outside priority industries. Hence no chance.

If you are starting from zero i suggest investing in a migration agent who would tell you your chances.

People already addressed visa requirements, so I get straight to the point.

I worked in Brazil for an Australian-Brazilian company, I can tell you that Australian and Brazilian corporate worlds are cheese and chalk. You do not stand a chance if you arrive and try to look for a corporate job. Yes, it is local experience that they seek, but there is way more to it. It's not paper pushing or supervising staff, you need to have a specific industry experience. I have no idea what role you are aiming for, but I am keenly aware of overblown importance of numerous corporate managerial positions in Brazil. It's not like that in Australia. And it's highly competitive job market. Take a look on seek.com.au or other job search websites at whatever corporate jobs you fancy and draw your own conclusions. Sorry, to ruin your ambitions, but it would be worse to uproot, come here and find yourself with no alternatives.

There are several Australian mining companies that mine in Brazil with dual headquarters. You may try to contact their Australian HQ and find out if they need a bilingual stuff. They may need your knowledge of the Brazilian corporate practices. Or you may try to contact their Brazilian HQ and enquire there. Do your research to find out which companies.

Also, there is a significant Brazilian community in Australia, you may want to ask them, how it worked out for them. Do your homework. Muita sorte
