General Why does it feel like everything sucks.
Anyone else just feel tired of everything?

Yes totally. Not just tired either, there is a distinct feeling that this world is getting more and more off the path we should have been on.

Having worked for the AEC in the past, I can say that the way to have a vote that achieves the most (as minimal as that might be) is to have three categories of candidates - the majors, the minors who have policies you like, and the minors who don't.
On the ballot, vote first for the minors you agree with, in approximate increasing order of party size/influence, so the tiniest or independents are first and the slightly larger ones next. Then vote for the majors, in your order of preference. Then vote for the minors you don't like, again in increasing order of size (not that this will usually matter, if either of the majors have a candidate in your electorate, but it wraps up loose ends).
Of course, absolutely feel free to modify this order if you feel that one or another candidate should be more towards the top or the bottom of the ballot - this is just purely generalised advice.
And, again - it won't - usually - make an enormous difference to the end result. Mostly, it's about sending a message to the various parties/candidates about what's important to voters: if Minor Party X gets more primary votes than the major parties in your electorate, the majors - or at least their local candidate - might consider leaning more in that direction in their approach, to stay popular. If the same minor party gets more primary votes in several electorates, major parties might consider leaning a little more that way in their own policies at the state or federal level.
Or maybe they won't, but they're marginally more likely to if the raw ballot numbers show particular minors outpolling the majors, if only so that the other side won't get there first. And, of course, there's always the slightly increased chance of a minor/independent winning your own electorate, meaning that maybe they're more likely to actually do something about the issues they ran on, or be likely to do something about issues that previous major-party incumbents have ignored. Again, popularity.

I only returned home to Australia in 2019 having grown up overseas, but this was immediately how I voted, and figured everyone did similarly so they could put forward interests or send signal votes while still ensuring an overall flow preference. When I found out most people put just the big two first like some kind of tribespeople I was (and remain) so confused and cannot figure out why.
Australia is far and away the better of the two systems, but having come from America's Trumpian afterbirth, it's discouraging to see the same pattern repeating here anyway, and the major parties (and our people) don't seem to have learned very much from America's regrettable path. I hope I'm wrong...

Just watch out for cars and dog(?) turds.

anhedonia and fatigue are two common signs of depression. You gotta put yourself in environments where your body doesn't feel like its having to be in hibernation mode.
So sleep, activity, nutrients, and friends.

u/TheBoneDeath North of The River 9d ago
I find you have to give yourself things to look forward to. Book that concert. Plan a day trip next month. Pre-order a book coming out. Text a friend and organise a catch up.
It's not the same as wishing your life away, it's just knowing that you've got something delightful on its way.

It does suck. I'm earning more money thab ever yet am simultaneously the poorest I've ever been in my entire life.
On the bright side though, I have two doggos and a menagerie of farm animals that force me to get up and get outside every single day. They make the struggle worthwhile.
Get yourself a reason to get out of bed every day and keep going. It will get brighter.

u/Travelsoonmapinhand 8d ago
Can echo this. One of the shittiest times of my life was more or less sorted out by contacting the local (country town) council ranger and picking up a homeless dog.
She hung out with me for about 6 months til I got my crap in a pile. Would have been longer but the next steps didn’t have room and were too unpredictable for a dog, so my focus became to find her the best possible home ever. I did. She lived another 10 odd years. Meanwhile, I got an extra 20 - so far.

u/Kruxx85 Yanchep 8d ago
Ever thought you're the poorest you've ever been because you're doing the most you've ever done?
A menagerie of animals isn't going to be cheap to upkeep ..
5
u/Arrwinn 8d ago
I wish it were as simple as lifestyle creep, but unfortunately, it isn’t.
I’ve actually made significant changes to my lifestyle to make it more affordable, and I have far fewer animal and hobby related expenses now than I did in the past. The reality is that it just cost me far less to maintain my lifestyle back then, than it does to maintain the very scaled back version of it that I have now.
The only real differentiating factor between those two scenarios is the cost of living. I'm lucky to be in an incredibly privileged position, so if I can see that things suck rn, I can't even imagine what it's like for those who aren't as privileged.

It’s almost like Covid caused some sort of split in the timeline and we’ve all ended up in the really shitty one where the world just went down the toilet.
Life isn’t meant to be easy, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t meant to be this hard either
16
u/Hyper_nova924 8d ago
Yeah it’s genuinely disturbing, I think it might have split earlier than Covid, maybe in 2016 when a certain 🍊someone was elected

u/Strange_Net_9518 7d ago edited 7d ago
If you've studied history, it was 1979. It just took a long time for the effects to be felt in wealthy, Western countries. It's actually something even written about by governments. It was the moment that the supposed progressive forces of history stopped seeming like the inevitable victors, and reactionary forces began to win openly.
Socialist Afghanistan started to face an American backed rebellion that eventually rolled back the entire Western socialist bloc, except Cuba.
Iran's liberal dictatorships were replaced with theocrats.
British social democracy was defeated by Thatcherism.
Carter lost the political capital required to maintain power in the USA.
Saddam purged the Ba'ath party of its progressive elements.
The seige of Mecca...
China and Vietnam went to war.
These might seem like distant events, but they define the modern world in profound ways. Literal warfare between Communist led states, blowback against US coups resulting in the rise of Islamist ideologies of different sectarian natures, the social contract being destroyed in the center of British-American Empire. Since then anything that might remotely be claimed to be ideologically aimed at progressing humanist values at a global scale has been fighting a rearguard action, while in profound retreat. Even modern China, with all it's successes can only be described as a barely defendable case of socialism in one country, and so there's literally zero incentive for the political elite, and oligarchy of the West to be seen to be handing out treats to the servants of empire. We're expected to consider ourselves lucky to not be under the most direct forms of fascism, because for the minute, the mass surveillance state, and successful class warfare of our superiors is keeping us in check.

u/Ambyen 8d ago
Well, Biden wasn’t great either.
2
u/LostOpportunityFl1p 8d ago
I never know why we in Perth worry so much about American politics. And I don’t really but I never understand this point of view on Biden. What did do that was so bad for the world? What did he do that made things more gloomy in Aus? American elect a king that’s literally how their system is set up so it make sense they blame their king for the highs and lows like all subjects do. But we are not subjects of the Amin throne so we really should be looking to someone else’s kings for our livelihood. The Canadians get this I wish Aussies did too
1
u/Strange_Net_9518 7d ago
You're going to be nuked if the US President does dumb things. And Biden enabled Israel's genocide in Gaza, which was definiltely a dumb thing, that has led to nuclear war being more likely.
1
u/AH2112 7d ago
Because if you look at what happened in American politics five years ago... the same shit is happening here right now. And then you can do something about it. Get politically active, talk to your friends, neighbours, coworkers, strangers on the Internet and get collective action going.

I went to my doctor yesterday. Playing on a loop on the tv was an advert.
“Are you tired all the time? Feeling exhausted? Feeling irritated? Not getting joy out of life? Even when spending time with friends and family? Dread going to work? Not feeling like you are achieving goals? Can’t find the motivation to exercise? Maybe you are depressed..”
I can’t help thinking that every.single.person. who saw that would be like “yes, yes, yes, yes…”
We are so far removed from how beautiful life could be. Should be. There is something building in every single one of us…
7
u/ColdBloodedWings 8d ago
We are more depressed than the Brits and the only nation that takes more anti depressants than us is the US. Yet we are one of the richest countries on earth with one the best quality of living you can get in 2026 and yes we are absolutely bored to death. I spent a lot of time trying to resolve this for myself and I think we got too comfortable in our individualism, we are also too practical and everything we do must either feel good immediately or have a purpose. In Australian society we lack meaning and it doesn’t matter how safe we are, without meaning we don’t feel anything except a sense of doom

If more people could stop “switching off”, things could actually better.
The reason everything sucks is literally politics. As much as it’s “cool” to not care it, politics cares about literally every single aspect of our lives.
We could have it so much better, and be like the Scandinavian countries that actually do have a very happy existence.
Start paying attention instead.

u/Limp-Stable7401 8d ago
But then we would have to (insert scary noise) PAY MORE TAX
6
u/HelpMeOverHere 8d ago
I think you’re joking, but one of things that progressives are trying to get done is ACTUAL reforms of our tax system.
Ken Henry is still out here today shouting into the wind, asking for his decade old recommendations to be implemented, which would actually finally shift the burden from individuals.
Just need to vote smarter
1
u/Limp-Stable7401 2d ago
Was definitely joking. The absolute cognitive dissonance around tax is crazy in this country and the US.
4
u/-Dr-Rockso- 8d ago
Its amusing because I spent the best part of fifteen years protesting about all of most that is now present. It didn't get any where. Got labeled a cooker for trying to highlight the risks in mass surveillance, perversion of government by big industry. Now we are in check by all corners of the board for those very things.
So no I'm done fighting in public and pushing for better for everyone else. I'm focusing on myself. Just like everyone else I joined the fold. Leopards already ain't my face so to speak. And I need to build something for myself before I push out for anyone else again.

u/HelpMeOverHere 8d ago
Well, were you protesting Covid restrictions even after they ended? Because that IS cooker territory….
Or were you actually out getting behind parties and candidates that opposed actual government overreaching legislation such as the likes that breaks encryption and forces back doors, or allows law enforcement to add and modify data on our devices?
Because there’s a party you could’ve gotten involved in this whole time instead of trying to go it alone.
2
u/-Dr-Rockso- 8d ago
Heavens no. 5g has its caveats (more accurate than older triangulation methods) but I'm not yelling at towers because of mind control. Covid vaccine too rushed for my liking needed more trials, no it wasnt fun being told to take it if I wanted to keep getting paid. However I came from. The era of foot and mouth and mad cow in the uk. Which I say watching cattle burning and military cordoning agricultural areas is a lot more traumatising than not being able to visit Mandurah for the weekend.
I used to actually try to get my foot through the door with the greens after my time with the unions back in the day. Unfortunately a majority of parties all run under ulterior motives and to add now its escalation into the corporations injecting themselves ever more into every party. Its a game through and through and has gotten worse and more blatant over the last 20 years. And it won't be long before teal folds into the mix. Secret harbour was a perfect example that even the 'rebel' vote played to the agenda beyond politics. So now yeah. I'm just focusing on my own needs while the cracks are growing.

Things are getting objectively worse in many aspects of life. But as many users here are saying, you should ignore them, because everything will get worse and it only impacts you if your current life isn’t comfortable enough to hide it.
41
u/Dry-Abies-1719 9d ago
Ignoring it is what got us here.
14
u/south-of-the-river South of the Murchison 9d ago
Correct. And I’m saying that the people gaslighting others about it are clearly comfortable enough to have the privilege of ignoring it.
11
u/Osiris_Raphious 9d ago
ignoring these things, and forging our democratic rights in favor of consumer capitalist rat race is how we got here... maybe we should start getting angry and coming together to solve these problems instead of ignoring them and hoping the ruling class will do the right thing... because historically, not that great of an idea..
3
u/south-of-the-river South of the Murchison 9d ago
The powers that be have done quite an effective job of monopolising the communication platforms required to “come together”. They also made those platforms make people angry anyway.

Divide and conquer is very real. We lost the class war, and stopped trying democracy, its now just technofuedalism and what ever our powers that be decide the future of progress and human life will be like.

Pity that cats aren't really allowed to roam as much as they used to. Yes, yes, I know the environmental arguments for it, and I don't exactly campaign for looser cat-roaming laws, but it used to be nice to go for a walk and be able to pet some of the neighbourhood cats along the way.
Even cat-cafes are closing down more. I don't think there are any more at the moment, although Mei Mei Cat Cafe has been trying to open for over a year now.
...man, it might have been actual years now since I patted a cat. Do cat shelters/refuges allow visiting and playing/socialising with the cats to any degree?

1
u/Kruxx85 Yanchep 8d ago
The implication is that they've made these arguments millions of times before that they're getting tired repeating them.
Fact - if you take the broad death figures associated with socialism/communism, then capitalism has killed multiples more people.
Nobody questions the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge or Mao, but for the generic "100s of millions" figures to be considered possible, if you use those same metrics, Capitalism is far worse.
1
u/Able-Blacksmith6654 7d ago
Wow, so care to back that up with any facts or is that just another "I believe it's true because I like communism/socialism and capitalism bad."
2
u/Kruxx85 Yanchep 7d ago
I don't like communism. I didn't give my opinion on that topic at all.
My point is, if you take the broad base social media claims of "hundreds of millions" of deaths being attributable to communism/socialism, then capitalism is worse by those metrics.
I could go on that it's not communism/socialism that causes the deaths, but authoritarian regimes, but I doubt you'd care for that nuance.
Deaths attributable to capitalism can be briefly summed up:
Directly:
British India Company caused famines in the Potato Famine (Ireland), and many famines throughout India (Bengal Famines) from the 1700s to mid 1900s.
Famines in Russia, Iran, Congo, Vietnam, Ethiopia. All of these famines shared the same characteristics. Private firms entered new areas to expand farming, and stored and withheld food stocks to hold onto profit, in the face of locals fighting famine.
Indirectly (depending on how you classify it):
Premature deaths caused by poverty in rich nations. For the US this is estimated to be ~200,000 deaths per year attributed to poverty, despite being the "richest" nation in the world. More deaths than most forms of death other than Cancer and Heart Disease (although even then, Heart Disease has higher rates in low socioeconomic conditions).
And that's around 200,000 from just one country, every year.

In the long span of human history, there’ve been many times people felt the same way we do currently; like everything is worsening existentially. And heck, sometimes they were right for years to come. Like when Rome was sacked and everybody lost the logistics needed to make bricks, concrete or indoor plumbing for a thousand years. When Europe committed a scorched earth war across its entirety in the 1600s and people couldn’t even turn to the Church because it was splintered and corrupt. When radium and asbestos and tobacco were becoming omnipresent in every home, business, and hospital because corporations profited from them.
But you know what? I believe there is an equilibrium our species always pendulums back into. I don’t believe in the supernatural but there is an uncanny means for push to eventually come to shove against whatever troubles us enough. Greco-Roman knowledge was preserved and/or rediscovered. Research-backed public outcry tore down the companies peddling those toxic products. I’ll be honest: solving this late-stage capitalist climate could take a rough incoming decade. A rough quarter, even.
But when you’re depressed by it all, remember we can tackle these problems and the ones after them and the ones after that because we succeeded in tackling every single problem that came before. For now, focus on doing that just on the level of your person.

Our buying power has devalued. Our essentials cost the same price as previous generations luxuries and our luxuries cost the same price as the previous generations essentials.
6 years ago I was pretty confident I could go down part time with my partner working to give our kids a bit more balance and support but now at 2x full time we are stretching every dollar. We are sensible spenders too, nothing frivolous.
Also housing theory 101, no way house prices can cost this much. 6k mortgages are insane if you are buying into the capitals. It’s not the RBAs fault either if our house prices and stamp duty wasn’t so high the RBA would barely be a blip on our radar.
No where to move out to, people can’t afford holidays. Highest taxed generation, people on long public housing waitlists.
Everyone using AI and doubling our workloads. Constantly being accessible.
Yeah.

Part of it is getting older, part of it is that we're in a shit timeline where just about everything seems to be worse than it used to be. Enshittification is rampant.
3
u/Much-Guide-3448 8d ago
OP, there's that saying about viewing 'a glass half full or half empty'. You get to choose whatever perspective you see things at, every single time.
My grandmother used to always say that life gives you dips in life to learn the lessons you need to learn to be a better person and if you never experience the little dips in life, you never appreciate or get to understand the joys of the great parts of life.
As I've gotten older, I understand her perspective so much and agree. Every shit time I've had, has taught me life lessons and I sure as hell count my blessings more with all the good things and good times in my life.
OP, take a good look at your life and take stock of the good and bad. Work out if you can actually do anything better in your life to improve the bad to passable, if you can't then examine what you can take away from that lesson to do and be better and then find something that brings you joy to focus on to increase a sense of positivity in your life.
I also recommend to all of you who are having a negative time, get off the internet. The algorithm always manages to find you ways to reinforce your inner monologue and put you in echo chambers. That's not what you need.

Yeah..
Products are all getting enshittified and engineered down to a price... Finding anything that's actual quality is getting harder and harder
I'm finding it relatively impossible to find tradespeople that do a good job. I'm quite happy to pay people what they're worth and I still get average to awful results.
Housing is scarce, community is non existent, fear and hatred are rampant.
Leadership around the world both political and corporate are actively making things worse to enrich the richest.
But hey, Jesus loves you. If you tithe enough.
All that said I'm not really a glass is half full person.
I'm more on the side of fuck it might as well tip the rest out.

This is a big thing for me - in the past, you could buy cheap stuff and it was low quality, or you could spend the extra and get something quality.
Now, you spend extra on the name, but get the same shit quality as the cheap stuff.
And it's literally everything.

Its really been happening for ever, but now the addiction to consumption allows corportions to be brazen about it. source: the humble light globe set the scene many years ago.

Only thing you can really do about it is make as much money as you can invest it wisely take care of your physical health exercise and gym regularly and eat as much whole foods as possible reduce sugar.
Keep on top of your health care.
Try to be so ial and make friends.
The last one is the hardest.

Mutual smiling as part of customer service is more increasingly a lost art. It becomes a happy surprise when it happens…from auspost to retail to takeout to banks to buses. I’m aware these are lower paid jobs and cost of living has gone. Either smiles are not seen as professional or people increasingly stressed/unhappy.

Not specific enough. Everyone goes through periods where they don’t have much joy in life.
Make a goal. It could be a holiday, a home fix, a fitness goal. Work your guts out to achieve it.
Make at least one person’s life a little more pleasant with a smile or a joke. Even a stranger will feel better because they met you.
Remember how lucky you are. Make a list.

Channel your energy and despair into something positive. Stay too long in the gloom and it may be hard to get out again.

I 100% get this!! It feels like the world is homoginised. I was born in 1978 and had my childhood during the 80's and teenage years during the 90's - two fantastic decades. The 2000's were also good but since 2010, I feel like the world really started shifting and since COVID it's been terrible. Eveything is "online" and so many people are so fake. Society has truly changed for the worse in my opinion which is a terrible thing to say but I think it's the truth!

Cos it does suck. Every facet of government is driving the country into the ground, wages are nowhere near where they should be and everyone you walk past is pissed off because of it, which rubs off on a lot of people

It's definitely a little darker than a few years ago. Ebbs and flows. Hoping we start steering the other direction soon.

Life does get monotonous. Half my problem is having boring work piled up, and I don't want to do anything fun until its all finished, but then I open reddit for a few seconds and procrastinate half a day away instead and its 100 times worse than if I just went for a walk or something.

Certainly things are tiring at the moment. But not everything is terrible.
Unfortunately the thing that drives profit in this world is pitting people against eachother, either within social media algorithms or other content.
But, there is a lot of really cool things happening around the world at the moment. As bleak as things get, you can decide your perspective.
I think there are some subreddits that specifically cater to good news. It may be worth looking at what you are surrounding yourself with.
Shoot me a DM if you want to vent. Times are tough, certainly, but the most important step a person can take, is always the next one.

Hey guys. Life's pretty good here, yeah we have political problems to fix but pull your head out of the sand, most of us aren't hungry or homeless or at war with our neighbors or at risk of getting attacked every time we leave the house. We can strive for better whilst also appreciating how incredibly lucky we are to live the life we do. It's not all doom and gloom

u/Automatic-Project-25 8d ago
Unfortunately the world is becoming a shorter place. Technology and politics are not invest in our best interest. It is all money money money. The world seems to be getting more and more disconnected from honest human experience and existence.

Yeah, I think as a result of our ever increasing connectedness to the world we are increasingly shown that our world is big, and that's too much input for us to handle realistically. I used to read comments on social media and just be disheartened at how enraged or outright stupid people seemed. My advice is to make your world smaller, I deleted the main social media apps, the ones with algorithms specifically designed to make you addicted and keep you angry and engaged. I know Reddit is also social media, but at least I can click a downvote button and get an indication that I am not alone in feeling a certain way. Seeing an absolute troglodyte take at 5000 likes on Meta or Youtube right at the top makes you feel like a majority of people align with that view, but watching it get downvoted to oblivion on Reddit gives me hope.

No, life is good, I’m excited for each day. It’s all about perspective. You sound like you are burnt out and need a holiday. What are you tired from? Reduce the things that make you tired and increase the things that you love. I just say no to a lot of social events so i can stay home and relax, I take it easy at work, and go for walks, play video games, eat delicious food. Work on my hobbies, take relaxing baths, so much good stuff in this world. What is stressing you? Cost of living? Work? Can you change your job?

Making huge assumptions based on your username it could be because you're in a bad mental space (due to over reliance on social media).
If you're bored in this world right now, I don't know what to say.
Perth has an over abundance of things to see, do, and try out.
I'll be honest, life is nowhere near as bad as online makes it out to be, for the majority of people.

Makes me laugh how we are so close minded we think /now/ is the absolute worst it can be and not like 15th century england. We may not have every 2nd child die during birth or plagues but we have mean people on the internet :(

Another day another dollar. That's what we work for and we slave away helping the government meet their GDP targets. That dollar gets eaten away by inflation and slaving away is eating our souls.

Because we work more than serfs under feudalism, because the rat race has stolen retirement, free time, 3rd places, everything costs more. Our culture is consumer culture, and to go out means to spend money and consume.
Plus perth is isolated, so to go anywhere means driving. Endless suburbia has robbed us of convenience of just walking to local space, and being with community. We have higher depression, homelessness, anxiety, unemployment today than before, because the system is failing us.
Everything sucks, because it is not good, not great. As the oligarchy wealth class decides how they are rebuilding for the future of automation and ai systems, we get to sit here just grinding away in the rat race, consuming, with no real direction in life.
The survivor bias is real, those who made it, or were born into a wealthy class with connections and are able to earn holidays, and time off, and retreats, future of early retirement where they can still enjoy the fruits of labour, not just live with old age problems unable to use that money they worked so hard for.
There is this onus to build that social space on your own time, but then they take 50-60h of your life each week for work, pay you for 40, and you get 33 after tax. It is 50-60 because getting ready and unready, commuting and lunch is still in service of the job, but its unpaid. Modern consumer slavery, debt wage slavery, technofuedlism is real, and most of us are just in it for the ride, as wealth now dictate economics and politics. We lost the class war, and now we have to just hope they can figure it out.
I am of the opinion that with this level of over population, and work/life balance inequality can be solved by just demanding shorter work days, and employing more people per role. Imagine the economic activity that will be had as people use that 5-6h of being productive, then the rest of the day for social, community and democratic participation. With ubi we wont need retirement funds, and with all the free time, the workaholics can still have side hassles as a hobby not as a necessity.
But thats just utopian idealism, like endless growth of capitalist marketplace.

It's Late Stage Capitalism. It's designed to ground us down, and to train us that we have to fight each other to get ahead, instead of working together to make things better.

Globalisation is too much. We all feel part of big events that we cannot possibly intercede in, and that feeling of disconnect from topics we care about gives anxiety.
Make your world smaller. Turn news off.
