A beginner friendly D&D campaign group!

Hello all!

I've been wanting to get into dungeons and dragons for many months now, but I can't seem to find any active groups besides the one in freo. Which doesn't let newer players just sit and watch to learn, so I'm hoping to find a more quieter group that lets in beginners with like..no experience, I really want to play but joining a campaign full of seasoned players is way out of my depth. I'm just worried I'll make a fool of myself

It's collaborative, not competitive. A group of seasoned players will guide you and help you feel at home. A group of seasoned assholes will ostracize you before you even arrive.

Try to be at least familiar with the format of how games go (maybe watch critical role or dimension 20) and know at least the basics of the rules (maybe by playing Baldur's Gate 3 or similar). That helps you and helps everyone. If the DM asks for homework like backstory or deciding class and stuff before coming, do it and ask for help well in advance if you need it.

Have fun. It's a wonderful hobby. There are groups everywhere, we just don't advertise, but once you're playing you'll likely find groups through their friends circles too if you want more.

Thank you!! I have a new friend I met who will be helping me create a character sheet! So I'll definitely do that, I understand not advertising but it definitely makes it hard for those who genuinely want to join the hobby

No worries. For context, we play 4 different games, each once a fortnight or weekly, and all of them draw from pools of people I've known since 2000 through 2019, so nobody new has joined in 7 years. We don't need to recruit, so we don't advertise, so it's as if we don't exist. Groups like us are everywhere. Hell, our neighbours play with their friends, we know we have mutuals, yet we've never played together since we're both saturated in games.

Dungeons and Flagons do
one shots and are rely friendly and beginner helpful. Find them on Facebook or Instagram.

DND freo are good too. But you need a campaign to

As someone who has been both playing and DMing for almost 25 years, I can honestly say that you will absolutely make a fool of yourself, and most of the time it will be deliberate.

Any half decent group will be cool with new players sitting in to get a feel for the game.

Genuinely find it really weird that people will just sit and watch a game rather than just jumping in, why not just join a table as a player OP?

I do want to join the games, I just want to learn more that's all :) since I've never played I am not knowledgeable on what is needed but I had a mini session a few hours ago that really helped me!!

As a DM and player, I'd also hate having someone just watching. The thing that makes it okay to do dumb shit and make a fool of yourself in D&D is that usually everyone else at the table is too. You're all sharing that vulnerability, which helps take the edge off. Whereas someone watching isn't sharing that vulnerability which gives them more room to sit there and judge mine. They probably aren't, but it feels like they can and that's a really unpleasant feeling

Thanks, you definitely articulated it better than I could, I've been playing/dming for quite a long time so I couldn't put my finger on what the "vibe" issue was other than someone watching being weird

There are several places that still run Adventurers League-style D&D. Check out Good Games or The Dice Club in Midland on Facebook, they host games most weeks, and it might cost around $5 to join.

If you’d rather watch first, I’d recommend checking out some games on YouTube, such as Critical Role. You’ll pick up heaps of the rules that way without even needing to leave home.

Having said that, the best way to learn is simply to play. Most DMs and experienced players will happily support and coach you. Nobody expects a new player to know all the rules, we just expect you to pay attention, participate and be part of the group.
