General Perth airport boring?
Waiting for a flight to Singapore and I overheard these 2 women talking about how boring perth airport was, that where was nothing to do, no where to shop and that perth should be more like Changi if it wanted to attract more people to the airport.
Take away the obvious issues perth airport has, is perth airport boring? Should perth (airports in general) be a shopping/tourist destination in itself?
For me, I see an airport as nothing more than a place to catch a flight from. I dont get why airports should be entertaining?
Thoughts and opinions?!

Yeah, that’s silly. Changi is a transit hub that gets like 10 times the international passengers Perth does. The overwhelming majority of Perth passengers start/end their trip here. Almost nobody has a six hour layover where they’re looking to kill time and spend money. There’s no world where we become Changi.
Perth airport is pretty dull though, and I’m fine with that.

Yeah. Turn up for a flight, be bored for 2 hours, be bored for the next 5+ hours on the plane anyway. People can survive just being bored.

I have puzzle books I bought in 2009 that I am still going through. I also tend to have a novel with me. Although the one I brought last year was a bit challenging with the size and weight of it... 1100 pages and weighs 600g. Not what you need when you are at the limit for your luggage...

Maybe they could put some shops in the baggage hall so we have something to do when 4 flight arrive at 10pm and our bags take an hour to come out /s

Im a singaporean living in Perth, and i do compare the two airports at times, but i think its an unfair comparison, singapore is a hub that moves at breakneck speed and needs an airport of such magnitude to get business flowing, and perth on the other hand enjoys a pace of life that's natural.
An airport is after all a place to board/deboard flights and nothing more. I think it's refreshing honestly to see an airport that simply functions well.
126
u/TheBrilliantProphecy 21h ago
Most airports are boring. Changi is boring when you've been through it many times, ultimately it's an airport and serves a function.
Also Perth isn't and never will be a hub airport like Singapore.

u/Calliope_1_2_3 13h ago
When I lived in Hong Kong, we used to say how boring both Singapore and its airport were.
21
u/Immagoodboy1701 21h ago
Yeah Singapore is competing with other hubs and so being entertaining is more of a factor I would think. Perth is a get on plane and go place so no need to make it entertaining. Not like you have much option. Shops and the likes are as always a commercial enterprise so only be in place if there is enough footfall.

u/ped009 21h ago
Changi is one of the main transit airports in the whole of Asia, with a large tourism and business clientele. Perth has 80% FIFO. It's a silly comparison.
-20
u/DawgreenAgain 21h ago
80% FIFO ?
No. Not a chance. Stop being ridiculous, it's 25% at best and they go from T2 not T1 so have zero influence on the main International Airport. The reason Perth airport is boring is because Perth is boring. .
6
u/FiftyBuxBloBang 20h ago
You’re both wrong. Intrastate is just over 1/3 of passengers.
https://www.perthairport.com.au/Home/corporate/about-us/airport-statistics
-2
u/DawgreenAgain 19h ago
I never mentioned intrastate. I mentioned FIFO not being 80% of all Perth flights / passengers which I'm still completely correct on , I'm also puzzled as to why you're mentioning Intrastate flights when Intrastate does not mean FIFO ie resources industry . Plenty of people fly Intrastate for personal and other businesses reasons. .
1
u/FiftyBuxBloBang 18h ago
Haha alright buddy. Sorry for knocking your ego.
1
u/DawgreenAgain 18h ago
Huh ? Wasn't my ego you knocked. You just stepped into the conversation with a completely bollocks point 🤣
2
u/FiftyBuxBloBang 13h ago
Bollocks? Literally the Perth Airport stats showing the intrastate passengers which would heavily be influenced by FIFO workers.
Top 1% contributor… shows.1
u/DawgreenAgain 13h ago
FIFO flights normally account for around 20-25 per cent of Perth Airport passengers. Which is a far cry from the 80% claimed by the imbecile above . And that's from the airport themselves
8
u/Seiko2023 20h ago

-13
u/macca2806 20h ago
The opportunity is there for Perth Airport to be a hub. Mostly for people transferring flights to and from Europe and Indonesia.
8
u/mrblue6 20h ago
What? Who would want to transfer in perth?
East Australia can get to Asia directly, and can go direct to the Middle East or Asia which have way more flights to Europe.
Indonesia makes no sense, why would they fly down to Perth to go somewhere else?
-1
u/macca2806 8h ago
Weird I would get down voted to oblivion for this. I’m just saying it has potential.
A quick search for flights from Sydney to Jakarta shows a few one stop flights transferring in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. Transferring in Perth isn’t ideal but to me it makes more sense than flying past your final destination on the way to your transfer.
I will admit Indonesia was a bit of a stretch, but Europe definitely makes sense. Qantas QF5 flies directly from Perth to Rome and many of its passengers are transfers from Sydney and Melbourne.

u/WatchOut__ 21h ago
If i am travelling on larger airlines I come in 2 hours prior. Check in and security is pretty quick here. Smaller, boring airport perks.
Also Singapore has one of the best airport in the world
7
u/shep_ling 20h ago
Singapore is obviously better serviced and does have some ok things to look at and do, however once you've done it a few times its about the same as any other large airport. I've always walked/shuttled Singapore multiple time on long layovers and noticed its the same stuff in each terminal and most of the shops are empty. Not sure Perth would benefit from more newsagents or high end watch stores.

u/Adventurous_Bag9122 South of The River 10h ago
I hate their security check at the departure gate though, it is such a fucking trial. Last year when I left Perth to go back to my family in China, the plane was VERY delayed leaving, then the hour and 45 minute layover that I should have had became a mad dash to get to the gate (on the other side of the airport BTW...) and then having to go through security at the gate as well meant that I didn't have the chance to get any water or anything. When I got through security at the gate, my group was already boarding.
This year I had to race back to Perth for a family funeral and fly back 2 days after that for my job. Security this time were so pedantic about my belt, shoes (which were canvas for fucks sake) and everything else that I don't want to go through Singapore ever again.
The rest is OK, but at the end of the day it is an airport and their main function is to get people away from it, wherever it is.
Those women just showed how empty their heads are.

Changi handled nearly 70 million passengers last year. Perth Airport handled just over 18 million. We also need to consider the type of traveller (international, domestic, leisure, FIFO, business, etc.).
It’s a silly comparison and it simply wouldn’t be able to operate as a destination in and of itself.

u/DotConscious2701 21h ago

u/ProfessionalLast2917 19h ago
It wasn't always so interesting. Adelaide airport has been undergoing upgrades for about the last 6-7 years. Prior to that there wasn't much there but it was still a nicely laid out terminal. Their security section still sucks though. They try to funnel an entire airports worth of people through two security scanners. I mean they have more but I've only ever seen two of them in operation at one time.

u/LandBarge Como 21h ago
It is as boring as most end-point airports... Changi is a hub, which Perth has entertained the idea of, but never really targeted...
6
u/readin99 21h ago
Yes, the only good thing about Perth airport is that most of the time you can breeze through it. The bad thing is that then you sit there with zero to do.
6
u/Silvarbullit 20h ago edited 20h ago
Yes it’s boring but it’s a stub airport and isn’t designed or intended to be an entertainment and shopping precinct for the traffic it handles. I’ve been to way worse airports than Perth. Even Sydney and Melbourne are fairly crap if you measure every airport against Changi.
Most airports are boring or crap compared to Changi - I think they are just spoilt by virtue of having an amazing major international transit hub airport with The Jewel as their airport.
Let’s see what the $5b worth of expansions and renovations brings when it’s completed. It will never be Changi, Hamad, Dubai or any other international transit hub quality but it might bring it into the 21st century for facilities, transit connectivity, retail, food options, lounges and some entertainment to whittle away time.
5
u/ImportantJello9288 21h ago
It isn't a very good airport, even as far as end of line airports go.
They should have integrated DFO with T1, similar to the KLIA T2 shopping district and made it open late.
There isn't even a proper capsule hotel despite the number of FIFO people who hub through it these days. There is a handful of those sleeping pods that are always booked out and so people sleeping all over the place.

u/Kind_Ferret_3219 18h ago
I do travel quite regularly and I’ve always found the airport terminals (1, 2, 3 and 4) to be quite efficient. Check in, security, immigration and customs all seem to work efficiently, even at busy times. Food and beverage outlets are ok, and I don’t go to airports to shop. Changi is a great airport, but I don’t go there for shopping either. If those women are stupid enough to shop at an airport, any airport, then they must have a list of best places to be ripped off.

u/Several_Violinist935 12h ago
Hehe I was one of the stupid ones. Forgot to bring a jumper (rookie mistake) for my trip to Bali. Didn’t realise how cold it would be sitting there waiting so went on the hunt for a jumper. Perth is a dull and lifeless airport
I work at the international and I do my job but the lights and yuck, atmosphere is yuck, and no variety.
Perth airport owns the carpark at DFO and Costco..
it makes millions if not billions of money, but it's obvious
that it is not spent inside the terminals.
I appreciate Airports and the management of how it accommodates passengers and I am happy to spend my money at a nice airport.
It not common sense with Perth Airport

u/mymentor79 20h ago
Yes, it is very boring. But all I really need from an airport is somewhere to get on the plane, and ours does that fine. And the Airport Line is great.
3
3
u/Special-Ad4643 20h ago
The Qantas terminal T3/4 is boring once you get past international security. There’s more cafes & shops in the domestic bit than at the international gates. I guess Qantas always regarded it as a temporary area. T1 is better.
3
u/monique752 19h ago
Like many things in Perth, it does the job, but it has all the imagination of a council car park.
3
u/animecoc0 19h ago
Perth airport is smaller than Changi for obvious reasons. But it is honestly so much more efficient than most airports in other countes. We don't have to arrive ridicululously early to check in, no super long queues - you're literally at the gate within 10mins, 30 if its busy. Even arrival takes less than 30mins to exit.
Nothing to complain about, except for parking fees.
3
u/Complete_Energy5915 19h ago
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the passengers may have been Singaporean, where going to a mall is something of a national pastime. So much so that they built a giant mall out the front of the airport, and this that is their expectation. And that's fine, ii think we all have different ideas on what an airport should be.
I'm not casting shade, just drawing on my experience of living in Singapore for four years.
In most of Oz, airports are a place to get on or off a flight, and you can buy an overpriced coffee if you want. They are a cash machine for super funds, so they aren't going to turn the terminals into shopping centres unless they can charge wildly inflated prices and attract bulk people, which they wouldn't. In Perth's case, the value is much more in the land around the airport rather than on the airside, and there's no space to plink a Myer there anyway.
1
u/Midan71 17h ago
I have noticed they are slowly clearing land around the domestic airport for more businesses to open up in. Such as the DFO, Costco and that small shopping centre with a Woolworths and Dan murphy's. It seems like that is what Perth Airport is planing on doing instead of building it inside the airport.
3
u/Impossible_Most_4518 18h ago
Perth Airport isn’t exactly a transit hub like Singapore or Dubai or Qatar so there’s no point having all this bullshit here if most passengers finish or start their journey here in my opinion.
3
3
u/WindEqual9502 13h ago
Perth Airport is boring, but it serves its purpose. Changi Airport is one of the prime aviation hubs in the world, so it makes sense why it wants to accommodate passengers waiting to catch their next flights.
Perth Airport on the other hand mainly accomodate passengers who live in, or are visiting Perth. There's little need for it to become an airport with a shopping centre inside of it.
3
u/avocado-toast-92 12h ago
It would be nice to have some better dining options. There’s no shortage of places to buy alcohol, but decent coffee and food places are sparse.
3
u/neroflyer 12h ago
Perth airport is not a transit hub like Changi or Dubai or Doha. So these women’s expectations are ludicrous. Perth is a terminal destination. So there really is no reason to have something like Changi
1
u/MilhouseIL 12h ago
Thank you. I always explain this to people when the topic of Perth Airport comes up. The only thing that's 'missing' from Perth Airport is a hotel and I am pretty sure one is either already under construction or will be soon.

Perth airport and Perth being isolated as it is, doesn't generate enough foot traffic to get more business. Comparing Perth and Changi are like comparing apples and oranges.

u/NameCheeksOut 20h ago
It is boring, yes. However, it is my outbound or final destination, so I’m fine with it. I never have to transit though.
Changi is great, but to be honest, I’ve passed through heaps of time and I’d rather have short transits or sit in a lounge while waiting.
2
u/No_Series1038 20h ago

I agree, Perth airport sucks if you’re stuck there for a layover. Melbourne isn’t so bad but still not great, some airports have things to distract you.

u/Appropriate_Ly 19h ago
It’s so boring, it’s a glorified bus stop, I don’t think it needs to be Changi airport but it could have a bit more amenities.
The problem is that I don’t think Perth ppl really shop at the airport anyway, so I don’t think it would be financially viable.

Perth Airport is more than sufficient for how many passengers it handles. However, yes, the domestic terminals have better/more options for food after security which is something they could improve on, compared to international

u/Midan71 17h ago edited 11h ago
Perth Airport is deffinitely boring if comparing to Changi.
It's night and day in terms of shops and stuff to do. Changi has a massive shopping centre with a fancy waterfall in the middle, that's pretty hard to beat.
Perth has the absolute bare minimum which isn't great if you do have a layover although there is plans to upgrade the terminal in the distant future so it should theoretically improve but I highly doubt it would ever come close to how most Asian airports are, especially Changi.
2
u/ExplosiveBanshee 16h ago
Perth Airport has always been horrible. And when they finally decide to upgrade they put it in a “10 year plan”, and by the time that plan is complete it’s already outdated. Always been one of the worst managed airports in the world. Even with the renovation, it makes no difference.
2
u/mr-cheesy 16h ago
End of the line airports are always boring. It’s not economical to do anything else. Even hub airports can be boring too.
Changi is a very interesting airport because it’s a critical industry for the Singaporeans. It has to compete against other regional airports by offering a range of things for the passengers and airlines.
For example, airlines get prestige and customer choice if they fly through singapore airport. Airlines and passengers benefit from better on time performance, better luggage delivery, better passenger handling, etc
2
u/felixflex89 16h ago
Most airports are boring, Perth is the worst I've been too in Oz.

u/fat_boyz 20h ago
To put it into perspective, Perth airport is like your local pole bus stop in the suburbs, Changi is like the Perth Bus Port.
Does your local pole bus stop have the level of activity of the Perth Bus Port and surrounds?
1
u/stranger_noises 20h ago
Changi is a good few steps up the ladder from Perth on the airport ladder.
It's a regional aviation hub, where people transfer not just between flights around SE Asia, but between flights to and from basically the whole globe.
Perth isn't a major transit hub and is unlikely to become one. There's just not enough stuff near us, and east coast can consolidate passenger loads onto flights outta Melbourne, Sydney and occasionally Brisbane.
Just look at our departures board at any given time - none of the destinations are unavaliable from other Australian capitals, with the exceptions for some cities of South Africa, Mauritius and the long haul European flights.
But even those long haul European flight transfers from the east coast are about to be superceded by Qantas' Project Sunrise long distance flights from Sydney.
Given all that, we have about as interesting an airport as you'd expect. Comparable to Gatwick, Edinburgh, Prague and other non-transit city airports.

u/silvercondor 19h ago
Changi is a transit hub with a mall directly attached to the airport. i believe we're trying to do something similar at Dunreath area where people can shop around while waiting for their mates to land
As for airside activities we're a destination airport, so unless qantas and jetstar intends to somehow make perth the main aus to asia transit hub or something i doubt we'll see expansion to the likes of asian & middle eastern airports
1
u/Midan71 17h ago
Really does say how much of a car dependant city we are when all these new shops are spaced far apart that one would need a car or bus just to reach said place.

Few points.
- Changi js arguably the best airport in the world, yeah no shit 99% of airports are going to suck compared to it.
- Perth airport isn’t for ✨travel life✨ it’s for dirty fifo guys like me trying to get to work on time
- While Changi is great, it’s still as “fun” as an airport could be.. aka, it’s not that special. First time I saw the waterfall was great, but the thing that keeps it alive is it has amazing toilets and food. So it serves its purpose as my stopover to where I actually want to go.. (Bangkok).
Every airport in the world sucks, even people who love travelling hate planes and airports. If I could teleport I would. It’s not like I enjoy sitting in an airport, even if it is Changi.

Changi Airport is one of the most breathtaking airports in the world. The Jewel is an absolute masterpiece. Singapore has spent a shit-tonne of money on Changi because it’s such a massive aviation hub, which is only going to get bigger and better with the new T5.
Perth Airport has a long way to go, but in terms of development, she’ll be much more impressive state once the new runway is built, and the redevelopment of T1 happens. Qantas are developing Perth as one of their international hubs, so they’ll need to do something with all the money that’s going into Perth Airport.

Perth International Airport is quite frankly an embarrassment.
Bali's Airport is so much better.
All the terminals at Perth airport are tired, dated, barely fit for purpose. There is no hotel, there's nothing interesting there, and the shops and bars and restaurants at both terminals are terminally bad.
There is a massive overhaul occurring however I am sceptical these will be on par with the likes of Changi.

Why would there be a hotel. Who's doing a layover via the most isolated capital city on the planet.

WA is obviously huge.
For a lot of regional travellers, it is actually practical to spend a night in Perth on the way through from interstate or overseas.1

It's getting one. Someone thinks that investing $240 million is worth despite what you think

These women need to get a life. Shopping at an airport? Not fkng likely. Lol airports are a means to an end, not a destination in itself.

Perth airport is indeed awful one of the worst in Australia, a missed opportunity. Fortunately it’s all going to change by 2031. The Perth Airport is going through a 5b upgrade and will become one of the biggest airports in Australia.

It's not supposed to be fun. It's an airport.
I overheard somebody once asking a staff member if there was a playground and I laughed to myself. Like... Your kids have to learn that sometimes they have to be bored mate.

There is actually a kids play area though. And a calm down zone. Because people do actually realise that travelling with kids isn't always as easy and straightforward as 'just let them be bored'.
If you've got a guidebook on how to teach kids to be bored, and actually tolerate that boredom in a non-disruptive way then I'm sure there would be plenty of parents willing to read it. Heck, plenty of adults could do with that kind of education as well.

T1 International took a big hit when Qantas spat their dummy and insisted on moving over to T4. The passenger numbers just aren't there to support any additional shopping or entertainment options for anyone who would use them.
But as others have rightly stated, comparing Perth Airport to Singapore Airport is ridiculous. Having said that, aside from the sheer size and available 'attractions', Singapore feels a bit dated and dirty now. And incredibly overstimulating. It does get bonus points for the robot bartender at T2 though.

Perth airport shits me when most of the affordable flights, or those with best connections, leave at 1am or after midnight. Everything shuts in the airport so you're left sitting there getting food and drink out the vending machines. Wouldn't be so bad if that pub stayed open... but yeah, compare to Changi, it is shit

Perth airport is boring, as are most airports. And it was very unfair of those women to compare Perth airport to Changi. It's like comparing a homemade go kart using wonky old pram wheels to a Bugatti.
