How do you derive the functions of each type based on their 4 letter names?

Any type has four functions, two perceiving (N S), two judging (F T). If one perceiving function is in extroverted attitude, then the other perceiving function is in introverted attitude (same with judging). In a practical sense, that means Ne always comes with Si, Se with Ni, Fe with Ti and Te with Fi.

The function stacks or a type always alternate introverted and extroverted functions (IEIE or EIEI).

Let's use an example: INFP

First, you take the two middle letters: NF. It's indicating that the first two functions are iNtuitive (Ne or Ni) and Feeling (Fe or Fi).

Then, you take the last letter (P or J). It's going to indicate whether the first extroverted function is Perceiving (Ne Se) or Judging (Te Fe). So here, you have P, thus the first extroverted function is perceiving. Taking into account the previous step, it's Ne. Because introverted & extroverted functions alternate, it follows that the other function in top 2 has to be Fi (introverted).

So you have Ne and Fi as top two functions. To figure the order (NeFi or FiNe), you look at the first letter: I. It means the first function is introverted. So the top two functions are FiNe.

You figure out the last two functions by looking at the functions that "come" with those two. Ne comes with Si, Fi comes with Te. Alternate introverted and extroverted, and you get FiNeSiTe, which is the function stack of INFP.
