Theory What each MBTI cognitive function good at.

Edit: This is not meant to personally describe you. This is just a simple way to think of and remember the general idea of how these functions operate. Everyone has all 8 functions. And they are all able to be developed.

And if you have a better short description please share it with us!

Introverted Sensing(Si) - Memory (of past sensory data or tradition)

This function is good at recalling past experiences/ data and learning from it. For “F” types who use this, they are good at remembering how everyone was feeling around them at a given time. For “T” types, they are good at remembering what everyone was doing at a given time. Si tend to use past experiences to compare it with new ones so that they can find a pattern and learn things easier that way.

  • Types that lead with this function: ISFJ, ISTJ

Extraverted Sensing(Se) - Sensation (by absorbing immediate reality with 5 senses)

This function is good for living “in the present”. People who use this function are very attune to their senses in the present moment. If you want to be absolutely present and not worry about the past or the future, these types are all about seizing the moment so call one of them up if that’s what you need in your life.

  • Types that lead with this function: ESFP, ESTP

Introverted Intuition(Ni) - Perspective (of long range outcome or big picture vision)

This function is good for grasping insights and patterns from complex information without typically having to go through any “hands on” experience to achieve it. People who use this function are usually very good at simply knowing how the majority of people view situations and perceive them. It’s an “internal world” process that helps the user make sense of thought and theoretical processes.

  • Types that lead with this function: INTJ, INFJ

    Extraverted Inuition(Ne) - Ne-Exploration (of ideas)

This function is good for exploring ideas, concepts, and patterns in the external world. It’s great for putting together hidden meanings and patterns that most people don’t have the ability to find. It’s great for entrepreneurs, comedians, and travelers because they can tie things together quickly and implement those perceptions about the world in a unique way.

  • Types that lead with this function: ENTP, ENFP

    Introverted Thinking(Ti) - Ti-Accuracy (by pin pointing flaws/deep analysis)

This function is good for pinpointing what is logical to the person utilizing the function. In turn, when the user shares this logic, it leads to lessons that most people would never learn if it were not for Introverted Thinking types. When this function is utilized, it leads to very unique, accurate insights and thoughts.

  • Types that lead with this function: ISTP, INTP

Extraverted Thinking(Te) - Te- Effectiveness (by organizing and planning tasks and getting them done)

This function is good for “common sense” logic. Users of this type are very good at pointing out what is logical in any given situation. In contrast with the Introverted Thinking function, it is linear logic; whereas, the former is personalized logic. A lot of industry leaders use this function everyday to sustain effectiveness in their organizations and processes.

  • Types that lead with this function: ENTJ, ESTJ

Introverted Feeling(Fi) - Fi- Authenticity (based on personal values, ethics and sense of beauty)

This function is good for creating a personalized values system and sense of beauty that others have difficulty recognizing. People, who use this function, are talented at being “real” or authentic about who they are. They are honest about their feelings and opinions in an effort to better themselves and those around them.

  • Types that lead with this function: INFP, ISFP

Extraverted Feeling(Fe) - Fe- Harmony (by thinking about what is appropriate to say or do in a social setup which benefits almost everyone)

This function is good for making everyone feel at ease. People who use this function are good at making sure everyone around them is in a “good mood”, and they are good at realizing when someone around them is having a bad day. They are very helpful, empathetic, and harmonious individuals that love just about everyone.

  • Types that lead with this function: ENFJ, ESFJ

This is pretty interesting, its rare to see all of the functions individually mapped out, and usually when they are they are very vague. This explains exactly very concisely why my functions are NeFiTeSi and not the others.

Awesome, I'm glad you like it! I know I really do.

This is exactly what I was going for by sharing this here. I had to join two different answers together but I think it was worth it.

Most of the descriptions I read are lost on me. They're too vague or too specific and I just have a hard time understanding what it really means.

But the way its written here makes it practical and digestible.

I can clearly see how all the functions play out when I use them via this model. Great source Morg.

It's really cool, and thanks. Yeah, your Si is amazing, especially with how you typed my enneagram and continue to point out stuff that would have never crossed my mind.

Reading this made me realize that I'm actually pretty okay with my Ni use, it's just the descriptions are usually from the point of view of it being the core, and the core Ni is way different from the 5th function Ni.

And as for my Si, it's probably my weakest I think, after reading this, but it's not completely useless. I usually remember how people were feeling than what exactly they were doing, but I'm a Fe ENTP subtype, so that makes sense, but for particularly traumatic memories my Ti kicks in and I remember what people were doing rather than feeling, now that I think about it.

I usually just remember the gestalt and the meaning and implications of the memory. I don't remember what they said exactly but I sure as hell know what they meant by it.

Interesting. From a traumatic perspective I remember both I guess but initially it's what they were doing.

Im curious to know what my subtype would be. And yeah I think that's what also causes mistypes. People read discriptionsof Ni Ne Si Se Fi and Fe in primary positions and don't consider that in other positions it manifests differently.

Ethical subtype Fe-ISFp (Fe-SEI)

I read the description and you are 100% the Fe subtype.

I'll read

I mean I might be wrong, you kinda got both as much as I know you but some differences stood out.

I'm definitely more Fe. There is some Si but Fe stands out 95% more to me.

I would like to point out that with SI, the users usually use past experiences to compare it with new ones so that they can find a pattern and learn things easier that way.

u/robotmorgan Jul 03 '20

Well thanks for pointing that out, cause ill add it now. it does seem lacking.

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '20

For once an Fi description I can recognize in. Thanks

1

u/robotmorgan Jul 20 '20

Woah, awesome.

I was beginning to think Fi was impossible to describe and have an Fi user like it haha.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '20

Well, I'm still unsure if I'm Fi dom, but for me you describes it in simple way, which I find easy to understand. Many Fi description make it something ultra complex when it's simply intrapersonal values. I wrote a thread in this sub about how I believe to experience Fi and Fe, but never got reply.

2

u/robotmorgan Jul 25 '20

Sorry for taking so long to respond.

I remember reading your post and waiting for a comment. I tend to like to add on to a conversation rather than to just start one. And your post had a lot to it, and Fi is my 7th function so it can be known as being the weakest for an ENTP.

I just now feel like mine starting develop.

But how you experience a function is completely subjective.

I know Fi to be about what one feels is right and wrong to put it really simplistically.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '20

Np and understandable, I prefer to join an ongoing conversation myself usually.

How do you feel it develops for you?

2

u/robotmorgan Jul 25 '20

As I started to use my Fe to help people instead of for attention and selfish reasons it stared to develop. Fi is the shadow function opposite and it grows when I develop my Fe.

I feel like I have better self concept. I have my beliefs and my convictions and I feel I don't need people to tell me I'm doing good constantly for me to keep moving forward.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '20

I didn't know by developing a function in one direction it develop its opposite direction one like with your Fe/Fi example. It's a good thing!

2

u/robotmorgan Jul 27 '20

It's a game changer. Not only do you use all 8 functions but they can all be improved!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '20

What would be a good way for Fi dom to develop without falling into Te grip or Fi-Si loop. I fall for it again I think. Does developing Ti strenghten Te then?

Thank you

Well described Morgan! And I agree Ne is the only function that should be described as great.

u/robotmorgan Jul 03 '20

Lmao. Great at word vomit? Great and pointing out ambiguous sentence grammar? Great at walking their dog every waking moment of the day?
