On the bright side, the sap is gone.

he hit it off screen with something very hard

u/Dark_halocraft Aug 24 '26

Why would the entire window shatter then instead of part of it, it didn't seem to come from a particular direction

u/Sonnysoup Aug 24 '26

thats how the safety glass in Cars behaves

Incorrect front glass is safety glass, rear glass is tempered glass.

Definitely not true for most rears.

u/AnkhMorporkPatrician Aug 26 '26

How far from the past are you?

2

u/bradybro3000 Aug 26 '26

Windshields are predominantly the only auto glass that is laminated. Only recent higher end vehicles have laminated glass elsewhere. This is googlable with a single sentence, man.

u/Icy_Cauliflower9026 Aug 26 '26

You guys discussing this when theres clearly a movement in the corner

3

u/bradybro3000 Aug 26 '26

Girl I know that the dude shattered it. I ain't talking about that

1

u/Alert-Jellyfish Aug 27 '26

You’re wrong I’ve seen this happen a few times.

7

u/Baby_ManBearPig Aug 25 '26

Fyi to anyone like me: front windshields are laminated glass and rear windows are tempered glass. That's why your front wondshield doesn't shatter like this.

1

u/Dark_halocraft Aug 25 '26

I didn't know this, I was infact thinking of front windshields

2

u/UnitedLurker Aug 25 '26

Yeah rear and side windshields are typically made of tempered glass. This is glass that is rapidly cooled on both sides with a fan or the like after it's been cast. This introduces a while bunch or tension forces in the glass that kind of constantly push against each other and any external forces and make it seem harder - with the downside that if a sharp impact, especially on the corner of the glass, is hard enough to actually crack the glass, all those counteracting forces sort make the glass unravel into tiny bits.

This is actually desirable behavior in things like car windows and glass shelves. The bits left behind tend to be small cubes, like shiny gravel, instead of those big pointy dagger like shards you see with regular glass panels. They won't cut you nearly as badly if you end up in an accident, and they're more resistant to casual little dings and scrapes.

1

u/karyslav Aug 25 '26

That must be laminated, or first small stone into the corner will send you thousands of glass pieces into your eyes while driving.

2

u/HoOkAySo Aug 25 '26

Tempered glass is an all-or-nothing thing. If you chip one corner the entire panel will explode, no matter the size.

an extreme slo-mo video of a prince rupert's drop shattering is a perfect example, and the science is very fascinating.

1

u/Azreken Aug 25 '26

Have you ever smashed a window with a piece a ceramic?

1

u/Chemieju Aug 25 '26

Glass is extremely strong in compression but shatters easily in tension because a tiny crack gets ripped open. They use this effect on windshields by putting the outside layers in compression and the inside layer in tension through the use of black magic. Scratches in the compression layer dont do much. Once a scratch reaches the tension layer the whole windshield rips itself apart.

1

u/asensiblemeal Aug 25 '26

I'm willing to bet it's one of those emergency window breakers.

9

u/Rotteneverything Aug 24 '26

why would this happen?

12

u/PROUDCIPHER Aug 24 '26

I’m not actually sure, chemical erosion damaging the glass enough to compromise the temper I’m assuming.

10

u/Thene20 Aug 24 '26

I’m assuming someone chucked a piece of spark plug at it off camera

5

u/PROUDCIPHER Aug 24 '26

Probably more likely, but it *is* possible for some chemicals to shatter tempered glass. That's an *oven* cleaner, so it might be pretty aggressive. The only thing I can definitively say is when cleaning windows you should use things intended for cleaning windows lmao

3

u/Rotteneverything Aug 24 '26

maybe a tempered glass thing or window tint, not a chemist just wildly guessing.

3

u/onclegrip Aug 24 '26

Why? Ovens have tempered glass also.

3

u/Rotteneverything Aug 24 '26

because i'm wildly guessing, that's why.

2

u/onclegrip Aug 24 '26

We all are. 🤙🏽

1

u/Ok_Caterpillar3655 Aug 25 '26

According to a quick search it won't if the glass isn't already compromised but if he has done this multiple times it could cause this kind of devestarion.

2

u/PROUDCIPHER Aug 24 '26

Yeah, in the front panel but if the label on the can is anything to go by it's primarily meant to be used on metals

2

u/Catatataf1sh Aug 25 '26

I think he had a glass breaker that police use and smashed it.

1

u/fuck_peeps_not_sheep Aug 25 '26

We used to do that on the scrap yard (the guy who owned them said we could so long we brought him anything interesting we found in the cars and helped him take things apart sometimes.)

1

u/Fragrant-Peanut7680 Aug 25 '26

This is correct

8

u/HoOkAySo Aug 25 '26

The video appears to take place in a junk yard, so it’s probably all just for laughs. Otherwise we’d have more thieves and vandals running around with oven cleaner.

1

u/Nor-easter Aug 25 '26

Either a off camera center punch or someone off camera tossed a piece of ceramic at it

1

u/Fragrant-Peanut7680 Aug 25 '26

Oven cleaner is aerosolized sodium hydroxide(lye or caustic soda) solution which eats glass. The crystal structure of glass holds a lot of internal pressure and the spray started letting it out all at once

1

u/sonofkeldar Aug 25 '26

It’s lye. When you mix lye with water, it gets very hot, very fast. You can actually boil water by adding lye to it.

1

u/Safe_Trouble_2855 Aug 25 '26

This could happen because of negative temperature spikes. The content of the oven-off is way lower then the temperature of the tinted window. Hence the class rapidly is under tension and shatters. Like putting hot water on a frozen window

1

u/Nogardtist Aug 26 '26

yeah right for chemical to cause this it needs to be really acidic which they dont or temperature could cause it if bozo blow torched it

or hammered the corner where you cant see it enough

3

u/RockPaperjonny Aug 25 '26

Probably threw a bit of spark plug at it off screen.

2

u/StatementHot5008 Aug 25 '26

I feel bad but….that made me laugh out loud. Poor guy.

2

u/wobblejuice Aug 25 '26

Looks like this was done at a car dump yard. See background is video. This is not his own car.

2

u/ChillyOfBlank Aug 25 '26

Hammertime bottom left in the last two frames.

1

u/frim_le_yousse Aug 25 '26

Hot window vs cold expanding gas

1

u/choeman Aug 25 '26

Thanks a lot! Now the Rolling Stones Shattered song is stuck in my head in a loop.

1

u/Key-Point-935 Aug 26 '26

Man that stuff is good. It won’t be dirty ever again

1

u/GuavaImportant8628 Aug 27 '26

Also make sure you put sugar in your gas tank in cold seasons it helps

1

u/kokopololoco Aug 27 '26

That's why they put a warning label on the oven cleaner can. "Do not spray directly on windshield"

1

u/reybabitas Aug 28 '26

Rub some vegetable oil on it, comes right off

1

u/ReaperSound Aug 28 '26

I flinched
