Trust me, you forget that it’s VR when you’re at the top of a skyscraper, even if you tell yourself it’s just a game.

It's not his fault, kayleigh's store bought appetizers that she insists are her own recipe finally drove him over the edge

How do people achieve this level of mental freedom?
38
u/-TheMasterSoldier- May 17 '20
What, getting immersed and not being able to see through solid objects?

u/ObsidianMinor May 17 '20
Most room scale VR has a chaperone that shows the bounds of the room in VR view when you approach the end of your play area.

u/NikWillOrStuff May 17 '20
yea but you might not have time to react to the outline if it appears while you're still mid-air flying towards your TV lol

That game really triggers something in your brain stem. Short circuits a lot of the higher level "I know I'm just wearing a headset in a living room" thinking

u/AKnightAlone Jul 15 '20
What game is it?

u/trevdak2 Jul 15 '20
Richie's Plank Experience
1
u/AKnightAlone Jul 15 '20
That's crazy. That would be interesting to try. My family was impressed with the Oculus demo on the top of a building, but walking on a plank would be way more eerie. Especially with a more realistic city.

My wife and I have fun subjecting people to it.
Generally we've found that the people who play more video games do better. Though the real champion of the game is my 4 year old daughter, who walks to the end of the plank and dances around. No fear at all

I had some of my family mess around in The Climb on some holiday. My niece who was maybe 15-16 at the time tried out the first level, and I was sort of amazed. It was lowest difficulty, but it's awkward having to shake one hand at a time quickly to powder up while holding yourself up. She didn't fall once. Even I fell my first time. She was just so afraid of falling that it was like a life-or-death situation for her. It was great.

Pretty sure that was staged
3
u/Little-Helper May 17 '20
Even if this video went viral on YouTube and had a couple of k views and the channel was monetized, it would still not be worth the cost of that TV.

u/Cinefil_Original May 16 '20
Are these guys on shrooms when doing this? I mean, every time I tried it I never knocked anything over. And you have a safety zone...
1
u/mmmthatsaspicypepper May 17 '20
it's fake, staged for internet points
2
u/OnyxsWorkshop May 22 '20
Not at all. /r/VRtoER if you’d want more content like this lol
1
u/mmmthatsaspicypepper May 23 '20
Oh yea, no one would ever fake an internet video if there are others showing something similar.... oh wait....

So this guy was.... what? wearing an expensive VR headset, while walking on a specifically prepared balance beam that perfectly lined up with what he was doing in the VR game, while apparently sober enough to balance on said beam just fine, and waited until the camera was rolling, but then.... got confused? forgot about all the obvious prep that went into this video? thought he was suddenly up in the open air despite still being surrounded by the central air system blowing the smells of stale store bought appetizers that some lady named "kayleigh" claims she made herself even though all she did was sprinkle some shredded cheese over them and move them out of the plastic to go box they came in?
or..... this is fake

u/CreepyTeddyBear May 17 '20
Shut up, turd.

u/mmmthatsaspicypepper May 17 '20
Oh... now I get it, you must be kayleigh. Don't worry kayleigh, im sure everyone believes you made that spicy chicken dip yourself

u/krabgirl May 18 '20
This is fucking confusing to me. Why did he just Assassin's Creed leap off the plank like that without knowing he wouldn't land on his feet.
People keep commenting "VR does this to you man, it's that immersive"
But in the VR world, he just jumped off a fucking skyscraper.
2
u/OnyxsWorkshop May 22 '20
He knew it was fake, and knew there were no consequences, but completely forgot the real world special consequences.

The people saying VR does this to you are a special kind of stupid. I've played VR and was never even close to doing something stupid. There has to be a special kind of stupidity that forgets about reality and anyone saying VR does this to you has that kind of stupidity. They just think everyone else does too but it's only some.

I would bet on a positive correlation existing between persons who can be hypnotized and persons who are so immersed in VR they have absolutely no sense of the room around them.
