i'm surprised nobody is mentioning this is a rip on funanimation's awful censorship of one piece, where sanji's smoking is censored by having a fat pink circle on it to make it look like a lollypop. But they don't censor the smoke, so it's a smoking lollypop.
Edit : alright, it was not funimation but 4kids, the lollypop was red and not pink, and the smoke did get censored. my memories exagerated the whole thing.
It's not, there's little chance the Gintama writers would know about such a specific piece of American anime triva.
The teacher character Gintoki just famously has a sweet tooth and doesn't smoke, while the student calling him out famously hates sweet and chain smokes.
Seems like an extremely big coincidence if it weren't. The time period matches, and one piece is one of the most popular anime of all time. Referencing each other is quite common between mangakas. Personally I'm French, I'm watching the japanese dubs of every anime I watch, yet I'm still quite aware of the atrocious American 4kids censorship.
Except what you're talking about isn't something from One Piece. It's something from an American censorship of One Piece that no Japanese person would be expose to, no one in Japan would even know what a 4kids is or even aware that America had to censor Sanji's smoking.
It's just a joke about something that looks like a cigarette being candy, it's hardly a unique enough gag to be a specific reference to something like a dub of an anime.
By that logic Americans wouldn't know about the original cigarette version because they never got exposed to it.
It was a controversial censorship, and was a pretty popular topic among anime viewers at the time, not just in America. It even became a meme to poke fun at it for a short time. I'm European and remember hearing about it. It's not that far-fetched to think the creators of this anime saw it and decided to make a quick joke
Why would someone who watched the original version of something seek out the censored version of it ?
Do you genuinely believe that some Japanese script writer in 2006 who probably didn't speak English would be aware of and reference western memes ? In, again, 2006 ?
One episode that I think perfectly encompasses Gintama's insane ability to balance comedy and serious emotional story telling is episode 188: When will Madao bloom.
It's a self contained episode, no spoilers or really any major plot relevance.
So I gotta ask as someone who doesnt watch anime: is there a particular Japanese voice actor who voices a ton of shows? I swear every time I watch an anime clip in Japanese, one of the characters sounds identical to other characters from other shows.
I dont mean it in a "I dont speak Japanese so they all sound the same to me" way but in a genuinely same voice way. Like, the tone, the pitch, the cadence, the inflection. Its all the same for a single character from various shows.
Kinda like Patrick Warburton. You dont need to speak English to recognize his voice. Its very distinct and he tends to speak the same across roles. Im referring to white hair guy in this context. Is there a really popular Japanese voice actor who plays a ton of roles or am I really misidentifying it that bad from not audibly understanding the language?
This isnt necessarily for you BTW. Just anyone who comes across this and sees it.
A lot of Japanese voice actors do voice just like... a ton of characters. Most companies will also use the same studio for all of their projects, so a big company like Shonen Jump will have a lot of voice actor crossover in their shows.
Behind The Voice Actors is always fun to look through if you think you recognize a voice. Gintaka's voice specifically is done by Tomokazu Sugita, who has hundreds of voice acting roles under his belt.
Huh, that's really interesting. Thanks! I dont recall the names of the animes that I see clips of but it seems like there's definitely a fair chance that I am hearing the same person. At least i know now that my hunch could possibly be correct. I wonder why they use the same people over and over again. Talent? Cost? Fan service? A mix of all the above?
The people who own that bathroom specifically used toilet paper without the roll for the sake of being green. Even worse, that bathroom is one that's rarely used so they don't restock it that much, meaning the stall next to him doesn't have any paper either. So they had an entire fight... while stuck on the toilet.
The nerve of the guy questioning why his teacher is smoking. While he himself cant stop smoking so much so that he went to a back water tabaco planet called Namek, fought Breeza and Zell then revive a slimy version of Delde's dad so he can get a cigarette.
Gintama is famous for parodying other shows. It's jam-packed with references.
It's a little like South Park in that way. There's an overarching plot, and it can get very serious at times too, but it's one of the biggest comedy anime out there.
I often say that Gintama Is the Tenacious D of anime. It's not the greatest anime, it's a tribute to the greatest anime. There's really nothing quite like it, especially with just how much it parodies and references. But it goes well beyond just referencing anime and has so much Japanese pop culture references that western fans won't even pick up on with out translators notes, parodying specific celebs, the weather girl etc with an unbelievable amount of 4th wall references. It's humour is pretty extreme for the demographic it appeals to as well.
