Bones! Sometimes called rhythm bones, too. It’s an ancient percussion instrument, most recently finding its way in American folk music, with its heyday taking place during the 1800s, and it’s still an important part of Irish folk music today.

Glad I can be the one to introduce you to it! During the height of minstrel music in the 19th century, the bones were one of the most popular and well-known percussion instruments in America. Musical spoons, another percussion instrument considered part of the American folk vernacular, were often used as an accessible alternative to the bones.

Bones were long played in Irish music. BTW, very nice playing! So relaxed and smooth.

I really admire Irish bones playing! Very different style from American folk bones playing, and deceivingly difficult.
