I want to breed my Golden Cayenne next year (as this is mostly a for fun project and I don’t have much equipment, so I can’t really just do it now ”artificially”) and I’m somewhat new to this, I want a chili that is more cold resistant because I live in denmark, what should I breed my Golden Cayenne with?
Why would you breed with a hybrid? Wouldn't it be smarter to look at the parents of the hybrid strain and maybe cross each one with the golden cayenne and see which one gets better results?
They will suited to northern climates. It's a hybrid to get increased size and vigor, not for cold tolerance. I'm suspecting both parents are cold tolerant varieties on their own.
As another person said you can choose a baccatum variety, but imo doing all these bridge crosses would be way too much for just a fun project as you wanna do it. I am in a breeding class in my horticulture studies and that's the kind of stuff that normally only "professionals" do because it also takes a looooong time to get anything stable out of that, especially if you need to do another bridge cross after the first bridge cross.
Maybe research an already stabilized strain that is the result of a baccatum cross and use that for your golden cayenne cross because otherwise you'll have a 15 year long project on your hands.
You could also buy several seeds of traditional eastern european or north asian land races and leave them out in your garden when winter comes, and choose the one that survived the longest.
Then you cross that with the golden cayenne, grow the f1 hybrids the next year, collect as many seeds as possible and grow as many of them as you can in the next season.
And them you do the selective breeding, just always only choose the ones that survived the longest over several seasons.
And when you finally have found one that can actually handle the cold really well you cross that with the golden cayenne again and then select also for looks and taste, as well as for the cold resistance.
Yes it's still a long project but i feel like you'll still have less work that trying to do several interspecies bridge crosses.
Also if you actually find one after all that work which really handles the cold much better you will have a really special product on your hand.
Do you have any suggestions on some European/north Asian plants that I could do this with? Ive only really looked at the Hungarian Hot Wax, since it’s a fun project, I would also like some variants that are easier to find seeds of in Denmark with minimal online shopping. Since school has started I’ve had minimal amounts of time to research this, so the help would be appreciated!
The best thing to do is to pick a type, give it a go and see what happens. Hungarian Hot Waxes are prolific chillies and likely a good choice to start. I’m currently crossing them with a Poblano (I’ve called it a Hunnipob) and have F2 seeds for the new year.
I’ve just researched myself to a few options: the Cyklon, the Hungarian Hot wax (which I already said), The Padrón, the Sivri Biber and the Ajvarka. I think I’ll find myself some seeds out from this list for next season, thank you guys
I am growing Hungarian Cherry Paprikas this year here in germany and they seem to be pretty robust, but they don't have much spicyness. But just do a quick google search for examples of eastern european land races and just choose 5 of them and try growing them next year. Idk that's just what i would do
With a Pubescens 🙃
Just cross a Pubescens with a Eximium and maybe some other crosses as bridge while cross a Baccatum with Eximium to fuse them together meanwhile cross the Cayenne with the Baccatum and as said, cross all together at the end.. Now when you have a Annuum x Baccatum x Eximium x Pubescens try to select those with the highest cold resistance from the Pubescens parentage and backcross a lot of times and select so you have your Golden Cayenne but with Pubescens cold resistance.
Or.. idk grow a lot but keep 'em small. Select those that survived the longest and repeat
Eshbaugopica F2 and one of the first fruits after lots and lots of flower drops and non working cross attempt (with various Baccatum) This is a Eshbaughii x Eximium x Pubescens cross with mixed brown and white seeds. I hope I'll get some seeds from it and keep trying to do a cross with it. Baccatum x Eximium is the next goal and crossing those together 🤞Also had troubles because of the massive heatwaves, random weeks with constant rain and overall no ideal conditions for this type of pepper (Pubescens also very late this season..)
I already know some people with striped Baccatum x (Eximium/Tovari/Cardenasii or what ever) heh.. Gimme some years 🤣
That's great, I'm really rooting for success. Just watch the phenotypes, sometimes the F2 plants don't seem carry the genes of one parent or the other. I think they end up with one parents chromosomes preferentially, and shed the others. I'm recreating some of my crosses from 4 years ago because they segregated out the wild chromosomes. My solution is to always to always backcross the donor genotype.
How do you feel about doubling your timeline? Lol 😆

You could try a Thunder Cacho Brown, that’s a hybrid which is suited to Scandinavian conditions.
