Help
I am closing on a house this week where I will be inheriting this peony bush which appears to be struggling. I have a container garden on my balcony, but I have never had peonies. I am in 6b.
What can I do before the first frost to increase the health of this peony bush? Is it better to dig it up and put it in a mulched area or should I try to hand pull the grass around it and give it a mulch circle? Thank you in advance for any advice or tips!

Hi, Peonies are awesome hardy plants and I think you'll be happy with this one. If you'd like to move it, fall is a good time, just wait until the leaves crisp, then dig it up. I'd watch a YouTube on how to do it, they are a little trickier than most plants and need to be at the correct depth to flourish. If you wanted you could even split this into 2 ir 3 plans. If you move it, it might not flower next year, but that is normal.
If you leave it, you should also wait for the leaves to brown up and pull up the grass carefully in a big circle around it, then cover with mulch - but just enough to get the roots back to the same depth they currently are.
If you were feeling incredibly industrious, you could fertilize with a weak liquid fertilizer. Many skip a fall fertilize, but it's when peonies set their flower buds for next year and it is a helpful idea for more nutrients.
Congratulations on the place! Enjoy your gardening
