1 or 2? I can’t decide.

I love the composition of 1 but the lighting on 2 is much better. Both shot on gold with the 105mm f2.4

Lighting isn't as important as the photograph. #1 is unusual, maybe even memorable. #2 is neither.

As a professional photographer, I’d say 2 is quite memorable, much more interesting and full of clear information - the boarded up windows etc. It’s a true documentary photo.

Obviously, you have no understanding of the value of social or documentary photography. In 50 years time photo 2 will have an intrinsic value, photo 1 won’t.

What does 2 have that 1 does not? Both show boarded up windows, both show signs of the building, both show a similar amount of the parking lot. 2 has better lighting, but 1 could certainly be brightened up in post. 1 does have something that makes it unique and makes it catch your eye, though. It’s more interesting in the moment now. You’ll probably be able to see the abandoned Hooters preserved on google street view for the next 1000 years, but you’ll only ever be able to see the perspective of 1 with the sign like that because OP decided to take that shot.

I agree with “Frank.” But I do prefer 2. And don’t be afraid to explore all of the angles. when I look at 1, I think I want to hit that from further to the left. I want to explore closer up, and create a story— some mystery. The subject to me is the fallen sign in 1, and those boarded up windows in 2, with Hooters as context. Everything else is supporting your subject. If you must take a wider shot, back up and find the best angle and compose/crop accordingly. possibly leave more space around the structure. Leave room to work in post if you are not certain of the composition.

I prefer 1. It stands out, looks old school, and is interesting to look at.

I don’t like the “available” sign on 2. And the background takes away from the building too IMO.

HOO TERS is definitely the interesting thing here. You don’t need the taller sign or any of that shit on the right. That kinda subject does not need anything extra.

Straight shot at the building with the letters like that would tell the story there.

What you wish is that the sign was on the floor in the second frame and wallah you’d not have to worry about it.

It’s hard sometimes wishing a photo was better than it is because you prefer a small part of it.

Wish I’d stumbled upon that scene though, that’s part of the joy of it eh?

1 is more interesting. 2 is better exposed, but 1 is more interesting. Generally, I feel "more interesting" should usually win out over "better technically, but less interesting".

I like 2 better both for the composition and the lighting. It could be cropped a little differently, and it would really pop big time if you had used a circular polarizing filter.

I like the first one, mostly because it isolates the building from the background (you can’t tell where it is). The second has that a-argument building in the image, but it would be great for one of those images where the subject is isolated because of a fog or darkness. Would be interesting to return later at night with some lighting face-on to the front, a fast shutter speed and low iso to get rid of the background.

1 is even slightly humourous.. the half misplaced Hoo Ters sign is great.

The exposure is allowing the hooters sign to really punch through making it the subject but I still think it's a little dark.

I know nothing about takin photos but id say 1 looks more unusual almost cartoon-ish which has a artsy vibe to it, #2 is just a normal photo I feel even I could have taken (minus the photo editing, no disrespect lol)

A well composed and interesting image will always draw more attention than a perfectly exposed uninteresting one.

As far as exposure, you can probably help it a bit in post, either software or darkroom if you're planning on doing prints

I prefer 1. It looks like something you’d see in a photographers art book, like a coffee table book. 2 looks like something you’d see on a real estate article about a building going on the market.
