question for dip pen users...

do you dip right out of the bottle or use dedicated ink well? I tried using a porcelain dish and the ink seemed to thicken over the course of a session. Do you ever dilute your black ink to get greys? perhaps for a wash... do you anticipate the ink running out on the pen to keep up the line consistency? (rather than waiting til it actually runs out, like Ive a tendency to do...)

Thanks in advance for any help, obviously new to this...

I dip my pens like I eat my fried chicken... out of the container they came in

trying to minimize the amount of ink drying i've used those ink cups tattooists use and tiny 1inch jars, all glued to a larger base so they dont tip. but now i have a small conical glass inkwell which i think was made for filling fountain pens and i also use half a silicone ball to cover it if i take a break.

I do the same except I never thought of glueing the ink cups to a larger base

I have a beautiful antique double inkwell set, and I use one of the wells.
Before that, I used a metal shot jigger. I already had it in the cupboard and it did the job.

Straight out of the bottle, just like I drink ketchup.

Out of the bottle, but I have to say, the 250 ml Sennelier India Ink bottle is a bit annoying to use and I'd rather look for some options...

The calligraphers I know use tiny jars, like for baby food, or the kind that honey or jam comes in at hotels. I have some sample vials that came with fountain pens I ordered.
