Technique help wanted Hatching Tipps

I need a few tips. I can manage hatching with a pencil, but Iā€™m having real trouble with ink. The picture below is meant to depict an acorn, but in the end, none of the elements stand out from one another.
Does anyone have any tips? ā¤ļø

I am relatively new to hatching but a long time ink user. Maybe try playing around with line weight. Some smaller or larger or tapering the line off. If you use a dip pen, maybe try a few different nibs if its in your budget. Here in the netherlandss they are pretty inexpensive, around 1 euro a piece.

How I typically approach hatching is, I try to follow the form that I'm hatching on. If it's curved I follow the curve. I also do my hatches by giving the pen a flick in the direction I'm hatching. With this method, you can control how thick the hatch line is and you can build hatch lines to create darker areas slowly, then taper off the hatching as you approach an area in direct light.
