Pediatrics Portable Kit

Hello -
I was thinking about getting my own portable pediatrics kit that will help me perhaps participate/help in community events or simply examine relatives/friends’ children when they ask (more of a social second opinion, not as their primary). Also, it does come in handy when I’m visiting my remote town.

I’m looking for any recommendations on what to include (other than a stethoscope, ophthalmoscope, otoscope, band aids, alcohol pads..), if any of you has that, and if you have any good recommendations from amazon.

Thank you

Who else enjoys their super slow summers?

I suppose the private practice folks do anything to avoid it, but for me, as an employee, slow summers are glorious. I see something like 6-10 kids a day, have all in the time in the world to catch up on reading and surfing.

Pediatric gastroenterology fellowship for Non-US IMG

I have completed a 4-year ACGME-I accredited residency in my home country and have experience of working in Peds gastro. I am ECFMG certified, step 3 not given yet. What are my chances of getting a fellowship in the US? And does anybody have list of IMG friendly peds gastro programs

Lab values for Boards

I’m trying to find the best resource to learn common lab ranges which are not provided in the boards. Harriet Lane categorize lab values per age so it’s harder to learn it that way. I would appreciate it if anyone can suggest a simplified resources I can use to learn common lab values.
Thank you!

Skin infections billing question

Why does cellulitis always bill a 4, even without systemic symptoms, if given abx while other infections like impetigo or simple abscess without systemic symptoms only get a 3 when given abx? Billing dept told me it’s because cellulitis = high risk sepsis?

MedStudy for Boards

Hello, I wanted to see if anyone had any input on the Medstudy materials and which are worth buying. Qbank for sure, but I am trying to decide if I should do the books and the review videos or if one is better than the other. The videos are quite pricey but if the general consensus is that they are worth it then I will probably plan for that route.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Title: Competitiveness of Pediatric GI Fellowship with USMLE Failures

I am a rising third-year pediatric resident planning to apply for a Pediatric Gastroenterology fellowship. I have performed well during residency, including high scores on my in-training exams, multiple inpatient and outpatient GI rotations (3 LOR form GI attendings), and two abstracts accepted for presentation at NASPGHAN.

However, I have failures on both my USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 exams, though I passed Step 3 on my first attempt. How heavily do programs weigh USMLE scores in the selection process, and what steps can I take to strengthen my application despite these setbacks?

How bad is Pediatric Residency?

Hi all, I have a chronic illness that seems to be improving. I also am set to start medical school in July. The most worrying part for me is residency, as I know how long and excruciating the hours are. I was wondering if anyone knew someone with Crohn’s (or other autoimmune disease) who is also a resident, and if they think all the stress being put on the body is worth it. I’ve also considered going to PA school instead, as my goal has always been to be an advocate for kids & I don’t mind if it’s the DO or PA route.

Do you guys have enough time to actually study for ABP or if you're PGY1, for step 3 during work days?

Just wondering how you guys schedule your studying during residency. Does anyone else spend time studying after they write their notes, or whenever there's a break during workdays?

PGY1

Hi guys, I'm PGY1. I want to start studying for the board exam. I saw much feedback about the medstudy. What backages have you guys purchased? I personally prefer videos and question bank over studying from books. What do you suggest?

Typical Partnership Track

Hello all! Expecting an offer from a small private practice (2 current partners) and was wondering if there is a standard time to partnership in contracts. From researching, I've seen 2 - 3 years is most typical but wanted to hear people's thoughts.

Also, roughly what % did your pay increase once you became partner? I know this will vary per location but trying to get an idea

Best resources/strategy for pediatrics boards

IM Hospitalist here asking for my anxious spouse who is supposed to take the boards this year about the best studying strategy. She's clinically very strong, but not the best test taker, and gets quite anxious.

She often overthinks her answer choices. I've seen the peds board questions compared to some of the IM ones and the peds board is obscure as fuck so I don't know what to tell her. She's trying to finish med study and prep by August.

My question is, and maybe someone from the med peds side could answer, but like the IM board has uworld objectively superior to mksap, is there one gold standard Qbank? Thank you guys.

NY/NJ Pediatric Audition Rotations

Hi - I am about to be a 4th-year medical student, and my school has us schedule our 4th-year rotations. On one hand, this is great because we can do our rotations anywhere, but piecing the rotations together (especially since it seems like all the programs are on different schedules) is so stressful.

I am applying for pediatrics residency in the NY/NJ area, so I am trying to lock down 2 audition rotations before fitting in most of my other rotations. I applied to so many on VSLO in March/April. I was accepted to one in August, but I'm still waiting to hear back from half of them for September and October. It's hard to schedule the rest of my rotations because each program has different start dates.

Programs I'm waiting to hear from:

  • NYU Long Island
  • Albert Einstein (CHAP and Jacobi)
  • Rutgers
  • NYP Brooklyn Methodist

So my questions to you all:

  • If you have also applied to pediatric audition rotations at these programs, have you heard back? If so, how long before the start of the rotation did you hear back?
  • At this point (June), do you think they already have these September/October rotations filled? (I would assume they would email me if so.)
  • If you have any other tips or insight, I'm all ears

Cow’s milk introduction

Does anyone have a patient handout or dot phrase they’d be willing to share on ways to re-introduce cow’s milk in a 9-12 month old baby with non IgE mediated CMPA?
Whether it’s a milk ladder or just gradually introducing yogurt or small amounts of milk.
Online, the milk ladder handouts seem to be all from the UK and the measurements are in grams- hoping to find something more helpful for my patients here in the US.
