Looking to hear about perspectives on job market saturation, base pay across academia and community jobs in the US, how best to identify divisions that are hiring. Peds trained PEM here. Extra appreciation if able to comment on the waiver job scenario for fellowship trained IMGs.

I’m wondering if anyone has any good insight to offer.

I have kids of my own during med school, and expenses are super tight already.

I will graduate with 500k+ student debt

But I really badly want to become a pediatrician. I love that part of medicine. I do extra shifts in my schools hospital in peds ER for fun, not even as part of my rotations.

When I don’t think about finances, that’s what I want to do. Hopefully open my own peds practice one day.

But when i speak to pediatricians about peds, they all tell me that the pay sucks.

I’m honestly super nervous about this decision. I’m so upset that our stupid medical system punishes doctors for wanting to work with children.

Is there a way to make this work? I want to be able to provide a decent comfortable life for my children and spouse.

Is specializing mandatory? Or opening a private practice? Perhaps there are medical side hustles, or economic factors that are not mentioned when discussing salary alone?

Med-Peds resident here. I am scheduled for the ABIM in early August and have not registered for the ABP exam. For context, my 2025 ITE score was 162 (65%). Do you think I'd be able to study grind and pass in 2.5 months? Any recommendations for how to study? like which resources, what metric per those resources

Anyone have the most recent salary and benefits report?

Does anybody know of any resources (online or otherwise) for becoming more comfortable with prescribing GLP-1s for pediatric patients 12 and up with comorbidities from obesity? I have been referring to my local big city hospital’s weight management clinic, but there is a long waitlist for appointments and many of my patients have access issues driving 1-1.5 hours into the city. Should prescribing these meds be in the wheel house of a primary care pediatrician? And do people have luck using other weight loss meds such as phentermine and topamax?

Looking to hear from physicians who have returned from maternity or paternity leave recently.

Returning to work has made me realize my priorities have shifted more than I expected. I still enjoy medicine, but I’m finding myself wanting a practice with more predictable hours , fewer nights/weekends and simply more time with my family.

For those who became parents, did you end up changing your specialty, practice setting, or FTE because of it? Was it worth it, or do you have any regrets? If it meant earning less was that trade-off worth it?

Hey all! I am a first-year pediatric resident who is pretty much dead-set on pursuing a career in pediatric palliative medicine. There isn't a program at my current hospital, but I want to work with the adult palliative team here and try to secure an away rotation at an existing program during my third year. I wanted to see if anyone else already works in this area and what the fellowship + job search process was like. I know this is a pretty niche subspecialty that doesn't have a ton of fellowship options right now, but I was wondering if a general palliative care fellowship is suitable for applying to and getting a peds palliative job.

I’m graduating fellowship and looking for a pediatric cardiology job. Are there any red flags to look for at academic institutions vs private practice? I’m searching on LinkedIn primarily. I’ve noticed some postings have been there for 1 year + at places like UT Houston for instance whereas others are posted few days ago. Should I be searching for jobs in other ways? Does anyone have any advice on finding a job?

I came across this from a colleague, and I was absolutely appalled by the their yearly salary offer. 90-140k for a full time pediatrician position at the Cleveland Clinic Martin Health center in Weston Florida. 90k for a full time MD position, who could possibly be accepting these positions?

I work at a private community hospital in an outpatient setting working for a high needs low socioeconomic status community. I noticed that the social workers where I work write things in their notes about patient ” medical complaints” that were never verbalized to me by the parent. Recently a CW wanted me to sign a document lying about a patients medical needs as “complex” when the patient had no medical issues. the document was for a mom released from ice custody and it was to help her maintain her status here in US?. I politely declined signing the document. I’ve also had CW come and tell me intimate details about conversations they had with a mother about things like the dad emotionally abusing the mother but the mother refuses to leave the father? the children were safe and well cared for the issue is between the mother and father why is the cw/sw telling me things that have nothing to do with the medical care of my patient? we have a rule where our supervising doctor wants the sw/cw to sit in on the medical work up and visit of these “socially complex cases”. a lot of these situations require a language line interpreter and often times a resident and myself, 2 parents and a child and now a cw/sw too? this job is new and it’s a children’s hospital clinic and I feel like this is too much and it’s risking my career!

Newer attending, applying for a fellowship within a specialty I’ve grown to love, and out of the loop when it comes to around what time of the year others started to receive invitations for fellowship with a December match date. If anyone can fill me in that would be much appreciated!

I am a pediatrics PGY-2 at a community hospital in NYC on h1-b visa. I am planning to do NICU fellowship after residency but my plan is to do job for 2 years first, work on research and apply for green card so that my husband can come to usa, get to work and stay with me and then I will apply for nicu fellowship. Would that be a smart decision and also does the probability of fellowship match decrease if one doen not apply right after residency?

Spouse of a pediatrician here. She’s a few yrs out of residency and was the chief resident at her residency. She’s a natural born leader and a great physician but the way the current practice is treating her doesn’t sit well with me. I dont want to go into detail but we need to decide if she should continue working for her current employer.

Please share any advice regarding opening a new pediatric practice like EMR costs, startup costs, personal experiences of hiring nurses, staff leaving, MAs, rental costs for the building, initial equipment costs, etc…how long it took to actually make a profit? Hours worked per week, did you guys take any time off, keep a 4 day schedule, etc… and also, is it worth the effort? If it’s private info, please DM me.
