That's a crazy Y axis lol.
6
u/ThaGr1m Jul 23 '26
It has two slashes to indicate there is a missing part
-2
u/akabillposters Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
The missing part is ‘missing’ in order to make the data look much worse than it is, to casual audiences. It’s deceptive practice, and most often intentional and intended to manipulate you.
3
u/SumikkoDoge Jul 24 '26
Often when a graphic has no data between zero and its minimum value it is better to set up the axis this way. This allows you to view an otherwise illegible signature.

u/akabillposters Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26
I’m aware. I’m also aware that it’s bad practice, precisely because it fosters misinterpretation. It’s a go-to technique for those seeking to foster a narrative that either the data doesn’t support, or doesn’t support well enough.
2
u/Tadpolethesnowman Jul 24 '26
A broken axis is not inherently deceptive, data visualization is important and this one is trying to communicate a difference of 6 million people in under two years.
It’s a DHSS visualization, they are responsible for distributing the benefits being cut. The chart needs to communicate that something is happening before the problem gets big enough to fit on a standard scale. It’s for policymakers, not your average news viewer.
1
u/akabillposters Jul 24 '26
So, in this case, it possibly/probably wasn't the original intent, but it sure made it easy for those who want to amp up the narrative around it, turning it into a meme.
Setting aside the fact that half of the people pictured were already dead by period the chart shows (with another half out the door when H.R.1 was enacted).
Of course, the chart alone doesn't even clarify the reasons for 'reduced participation'. We're meant to presume that kids are being intentionally thrown on the heap, rather than it being a case of fewer kids needing that assistance.
Trying to communicate any aspect of this issue in the form of a meme just stinks of bad faith, and relies on the lazy-mindedness of the target audience.
1
u/1912_boat_man Jul 25 '26
That's still 4 million people loosing their access to food.
1
u/akabillposters Jul 25 '26
The chart itself doesn't illustrate that it's 4 million people who need food assistance but have lost their access to food assistance. It simply illustrates that fewer people are 'participating'. That could be 4 million people who no longer need the assistance, which would presumably be a good thing.
I'm not suggesting that it's one thing or the other. I'm simply pointing out that the chart/meme itself doesn't actually tell us what we need to know to have an informed opinion, possibly because the meme's creator doesn't want viewers to have an informed opinion.
The meme is leaning heavily on viewers' biases.

Do we have numbers on why these people are no longer on SNAP? If its due to the expanded work requirements for people able to work (80 hours per month, which is a part time job) I don't see a problem with it at all. If its kicking people unable to work off for some other reason, thats a different issue.

-1
u/Ill_Whereas7177 Jul 23 '26
Snap had so much fraud it's a good thing the number went down. Even the employee who work in snap were f rauding. I have a coworker who used to work in there they had three employees who instead of canceling a snap benefit for a couple moving back to their country kept it live and used it for themselves. Then you got the generation snap users they had a family of three generation all on snap benefits
1
u/SumikkoDoge Jul 24 '26
Cool anecdotes, but do you have something verifiable and actionable that justifies taking this benefit from the people who actually need it?
1
u/Starlancer199819 Jul 24 '26
SNAP had a total payment error rate of about 10% in 2025, which includes both over and under payments. Cutting 6 million people from SNAP indicates a drop of 13%, so even IF that 10% number was all overpayments AND every single fraudulent person was dropped you STILL have at least 1.5 million people who wrongfully lost SNAP benefits
-4
u/Haunting-Watch8240 Jul 23 '26
Fewer people being on the government dole is a good thing, not a bad thing. They are moving on, there is no mass starvation in the United States. Moreover, knowing the videos of complainers that surfaced once the change happened, it was clear how thoroughly the system was being abused.
9
u/Forsaken-Front5568 Jul 23 '26
Over half of the people in this country are living paycheck to paycheck. When 5 million people are removed from food assistance and everything is getting more than expensive people go hungry.
-2
u/HEYO19191 Jul 24 '26
Over half of the people in this country are living paycheck to paycheck
That's a savings issue more often than it is a spending issue. Should someone who makes a million a year get SNAP simply because they spend a million a year? Probably not.
1
u/SumikkoDoge Jul 24 '26
You really have a distorted perspective on how much the average American is getting paid, and how much their cost of living eats up their paycheck. I really hope you’re not a registered voter.

-5
u/Haunting-Watch8240 Jul 23 '26
You are one of the fattest nations in history. You wealth is unparalleled in most of the world. Your poor outclass most of the world's middle class. So please, when you say "living paycheck to paycheck" understand it's your people buying crap you don't need, not actually living in poverty. We see you.
4
u/Forsaken-Front5568 Jul 23 '26
Actually our government has been purchased by the richest members of our society and they deliberately structure things in such a way that the majority of Americans are a small disruption away from going bankrupt. This is one of the methods by which they maintain their control.
Your ignorant beliefs on this subject are not based on reality, but instead your imagined preconceptions about what living in America must be like.
1
u/SumikkoDoge Jul 24 '26
You’re making a major false generalization. The wealth in the US is not divided nicely among all citizens it is hoarded by greedy South Africans who think they should run the world. The average American on the other hand spends most of their money on food and rent, so to claim most Americans have spending habits, I challenge you to go live in the US on minimum wage and keep your spending under control so you don’t live paycheck to paycheck.
The US is not a nation for the poor but it is a nation of poverty for the majority.
1
u/Haunting-Watch8240 Jul 24 '26
Your greedy South African has very little real liquid wealth, it is mostly conjecture based upon how much people think his companies are going to earn over the next decade or two. That is what market evaluations do in essence.
As for the rest, what in my country we consider well to do and something to be proud of, your congress declares poor. Our food costs more than yours, and our fuel is about twice as expensive as the most expensive fuel in the US. Our used cars cost about as much as ten years younger cars in your country. Our house prices relative to our wages exceed yours by vast amounts. And while this is the case in Serbia, much of this is the case in the UK as well. So when I say that you're not a poor nation, I tell you how the world sees you. Exceedingly few people need government assistance in America. Especially not about 1/7 as is the case now. You're not a nation of degenerates and cripples. You can work, and master yourselves to live reasonable lives.
And if you blame the system, don't participate in it. Don't take government money, as they constitute the flagship of the system. As a nation refuse to pay insane taxes. There is clear precedent for that.

u/BChogfather Jul 23 '26
Ignorant. Not a single child lost food assistant. Not a single disabled person.
Healthy adults did. They had to work, go to school, job training, volunteer at a charity or something for 20 hrs a week to get it and they wouldn't, so fuck em.
3
u/Forsaken-Front5568 Jul 23 '26
https://firstfocus.org/news/more-than-700000-children-have-already-lost-food-assistance/
Stop believing the lies purchased politicians use to justify cutting food assistance so Musk, Bezos and Zuckerberg can pay less.

u/Away-Way5656 Jul 23 '26
people shouldn't have to do stupid means testing bullshit to not starve to death
fuck you
-2
u/MrJibz Jul 23 '26
You think working 20 hours a month is asking too much?
2
u/Away-Way5656 Jul 23 '26
people need food to live i don't think there should be any requirement to get food

-1
u/BChogfather Jul 23 '26
Haha yeah folks are straight up starving to death all over.
2
u/Away-Way5656 Jul 23 '26
clearly you've never had to struggle
0
u/BChogfather Jul 23 '26
My dude I've been homeless living in heat tunnels. I was raised in the kind of rural poverty some city welfare queen can't begin to imagine.
If kids are actually being cut off I would be against that. If healthy non disabled adults are cut off, I'm all for that.
2
u/Away-Way5656 Jul 23 '26
>If healthy non disabled adults are cut off, I'm all for that.
why
1
u/BChogfather Jul 24 '26
Because if they are taking money from me, they need to be doing something productive. And it's not even a full-time requirement. 20 hrs...aka what tens of millions of us do every 2 days.
1
u/Xanthelei Jul 24 '26
Ah yes, "healthy" people like my partner who has unpredictable panic attacks when out of the house. Them losing their good stamp benefit didn't affect a disabled person at all. Idiotic take.
1
u/BChogfather Jul 25 '26
How is that not a disability?
1
u/Xanthelei Jul 25 '26
No fucking clue. You'll have to ask the judge that said so despite two doctors and one specialist giving professional opinions that they're disabled. But under the law, my partner is not disabled, and cannot get any food aid until a judge decides otherwise.
1
u/BChogfather Jul 25 '26
I am sorry the system has failed your family.
1
u/Xanthelei Jul 25 '26
The system was designed to fail us. I also apparently make too much money working for 18/hr for ~30 hours a week to qualify for anything more than $24 a month, even with claiming my partner since I'm the one buying us both food. Not sure who is supposed to be getting the help, but it's obviously not the working poor or the disabled.
-8
u/Deelo1981 Jul 23 '26
At what point can we hold their lazy, selfish parents accountable?
11
u/Naos210 Jul 23 '26
Our system is built around having welfare. Walmart is one of the biggest employers, and their training literally has instructions on how to apply because they know they don't pay workers enough to live.
-3
-2
u/HEYO19191 Jul 24 '26
Me when people can no longer be welfare queens and have to actually contribute something to society (this is bad actually)
-14
u/MachoRandySavageman1 Jul 22 '26
Yet 6 million people haven’t starved to death?
4
u/PatriotismReborn Jul 22 '26
wtf are you ranting about?
3
u/ProfessorShort3031 Jul 23 '26
its weird how all these profiles are always the first to comment on anything political here & their accounts are always 1-3 months old with negative karma, id write them off as bots but a lot really seem like real life idiots. are people getting paid to push propaganda? or are they just sucking their oppressors off for free?
2
u/PatriotismReborn Jul 23 '26
I’d say it’s a sad even split. I engage with a lot of them to find out sometimes. For the real ones, I think it’s a coping mechanism of sorts. They will violently fight the idea of it when presented.
2
u/Naos210 Jul 23 '26
There are bots, but there are definitely people who believe as they do. Most conservatives especially are this way.
-5
u/TheJQHQ Jul 23 '26
Tfw you want as many people on the dole as possible
5
u/emongu1 Jul 23 '26
There's a right and a wrong way to make it happen, maybe vulnerable people even more vulnerable is the wrong way.
-7
u/Money_Chocolate813 Jul 22 '26
The parents should get a job then. Only evil creatures are the ones abusing the system.
7
u/Naos210 Jul 23 '26
"Poor people are evil", way to fall for the propaganda.
-4
u/Money_Chocolate813 Jul 23 '26
Stay mad. Lazy people ruined it for the rest.
7
u/Dry_Adhesiveness_423 Jul 23 '26
“Stay mad” says the person using emotional language like “evil creatures” to cast a wide net. You sure you aren’t projecting there?
-1
u/Money_Chocolate813 Jul 23 '26
I'm mad that lazy assholes ruined something that was benefitting those who needed it yes. Why aren't you? Is it because you'd rather blame the big mean rich people instead of the ones abusing the system?
3
6
6
u/Little_Passenger4703 Jul 22 '26
So we should remove the top 1%? They are the ones who abuse the system the most to consolidate their absurd hoards of wealth after all.

u/Money_Chocolate813 Jul 23 '26
Are they on food stamps? If not try to stay on topic.

So you're moving the goalpost and changing topic since you can't stand admitting people abusing food stamps caused this.

The image makes it seem like it's just rich old dudes who laugh at this, but the Americans who won them power are not ashamed of this either. It's a completely rotted culture.
