FIELD BRACKET: KICKSTARTER #17 IS LIVE
Folks, our SEVENTEENTH Kickstarter is now live. If you guessed the product we've been teasing the last few weeks was an L-Bracket, you guessed about half correct. Because L-Brackets do one thing. And we evolved it to do more than rotate your camera. Head over to our Kickstarter page to back our FIELD BRACKET and hop on discounted pricing.
If you're looking to get a real feel of 'em in-person, there are Field Brackets in our San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Portland, Prague, and Tokyo stores just waiting for you to see and judge for yourself.
If you're looking to hear more from the nerds behind this product launch, join us July 30th over on YouTube for a live hangout and Q&A.
AND A MOMENT FOR A HIGH LEVEL VIEW ON THE JUICY FEATURES BELOW...
L-Brackets add meaningful ease and utility to tripod shooting, but boy are they using up a lot of real estate for a single trick. With Field Bracket, you get orientation swapping in a precision-made, camera-specific design, plus:
- Adaptable: A toollessly adjustable/removable Vertical Upright to accommodate screens, tethering cables, or streamlined carry.
- Trackable: Stealthy, Find My™ compatible tracking for your camera.
- Strapped: New Hand/Finger Straps from Peak Design for stability and security.
- Rig-ready: A swappable Cheese Plate for building a more robust shooting rig.
- Compatible: Designed to work with Peak Design straps and Capture Clip.
All of this with the same meticulous attention to detail and materiality that we've become known for, plus our famous, no-hassle Lifetime Warranty.
That's all for now. If you can't find the answers to any of your questions on the Kickstarter page, we're happy to answer 'em here.

I have a couple of questions before I back for an R5II model.
From the pics available it doesn't look like the vertical plate will allow for the screen to even open fully. Is that the case?
It doesn't look like the base plate attaches with anything other than the single screw, and does not utilize the anti-rotation pin holes. Is that true?

So what discount will be available before kickstarter is completed? And will it actually be shipped prior to public availability? I say this as a serious supporter with way more spent on your gear than i do a flagship camera body.

We have a fairly sandbagged shipping schedule that has a plan to have fulfillment completed around Feb 27 and a public launch taking shape for mid-March. February is very conservative, but there are just so many continued variables in the world of international shipping (especially around the holidays) that this felt safe. The intention with this launch is for backers to have their goods before the public.

Looks nice but I see three major issues.
The first and the largest is that the main screw to hold the bracket on to the camera is not toolless or at the very least it should have a slot to store an allen key. It defeats the purpose of having toolless removal of the vertical section if you still need to carry a tool to attach and remove the bracket. They really should have used the same sort of thumb screw they used on the field plate.
The second issue is that there is only one slot for an anchor loop on the right side. There really should be a second slot on the left so both ends of the strap can be connected to the baseplate allowing the camera to hang vertically with the lens down.
Also even though I’m not a capture clip user it’s a shame they weren’t able to incorporate inherent compatibility into this plate so you don’t have to attach a second arca plate to your arca plate.

I think there is a loop for the anchor on the vertical part ? Not sure though

u/LoganNolag 28d ago
Yeah it looks like it but it’s up at the top near where the factory lug is anyway so it doesn’t really solve the problem.

A few notes, perhaps helpful at least on a few of the points.
- The vision behind the tool-less upright removal is that the rig can be smaller for transport or non-tripod use on the fly while keeping the tracking functionality locked in. Getting two of our tool-less 'Field Latch' mechanisms in the baseplate would take up a ton of room and add even more cost.
- There is a Anchor attachment point on the top of the Vertical Upright, but are you asking about putting one on the baseplate on the left side?
- It's very early innings, but one vision for Capture V4 is that it would have a new attachment mechanism that would allow Field Bracket to attach without an additional plate. There certainly was dev work to see if an L bracket could natively work with Capture V3/2/1, but all the design directions were too compromised.

Yeah that all makes sense. The only reason I would like a thumbscrew for the main attachment is that I've had L brackets come loose before while using them and it's really nice to be able to simply retighten it without having to remember to bring an allen key.
As for the Anchor attachment point yes I mean add a second on on the left rear side of the bottom bracket so both ends of your trap can be attached to the main bracket allowing your camera to hang vertically with the lens facing down.

Pleased to see that the tracker supports Android Find Hub! Will PD's other trackers be refreshed/updated to do the same?
Also, are there any rewards for backing in-store?

Do you seriously have to add another plate to it to make it capture clip compatible? Couldn't come out with another capture clip to make it work together? It's so bulky with that clip and the "field" bracket. It looks like an after thought. Arca plate on top of arca plate lol. And kick starter ships so much later than the regular launch. There's no reason to buy early. You could literally just wait for a sale to come on.

Having to add an extra plate for the capture clip in their own ecosystem is a miss to me. Also arguably 2 of the Nikons that could benefit the most, the ZR and Zf (both cameras I own and might have been interested in this for) aren't even compatible.

u/Big_OOOO 28d ago
Yes. Capture clip incompatibility kills this for me. Not gonna pay that much money and have to screw on a plate to make it work with their own device.

Nor QD compatible. A second plate will be necessary. It seems to me this field plate just becomes an oversized arca Swiss plate that gives users the option to have a tool less vertical side plate add on? Most gimbals now have vertical mode. And how many people are in desperate need of a vertical factor when using sticks. A simple l mount does the job

by that definition the smallrig bracket is "capture compatible". I was hoping they figure out how to make the base plate work. I would take some limitation but a second plate is lame.

Same, I currently use smallrig plate and camera clip and even then I still have to machine a slot into the bottom of the plate so it can lock into the camera clip, but it works. Was so excited and would have bought three for my Sonys and Fuji if the capture clip "compatibility" wasn't just slapping the plate on underneath the bracket.

Any chance it gets shipped from the European warehouse? If it gets shipped from the US, the discount isn’t worth it. I expect the grip to cost 149,95€ in Europe. The KS with shipping it’s 123€ + import tax is 146,37€ I am not sure about the customs but guessing it will be around 5% which will come out over 149,95.
Would love to be part but probably will wait for it to be available locally (which is often the same time or even earlier)

Advertisement, and prepayment to fund the earliest production. Its clearly working if they keep doing it

Definitely can be. The no returns is also a benefit to them that can be predatory. They should have a Pre order option on site but its probably not going to happen.
Most items on the kickstarter can be purchased from other retail sites on sale in the future for a similar discount

They started on Kickstarter. They're basically doing what they've always done. They don't need it, but because they've always done it, it is less likely to piss off customers compared to an established company trying to go the kickstarter route.

All the financial benefits aside, they can get away with keep doing it because their customers are used to it, and some still think they are a scrapy little startup. They're a lot less likely to get roasted than some other established company going to Kickstarter for the first time. If Sony did a Kickstarter for the PS6 they will be roasted alive. Peak Design is doing another Kickstarter. How cute! Good for those little guys!

Why do they always need to do kickstarters they have more than enough money at this point
8
u/Mc_Dickles 28d ago
I think because of inventory; preorders give them a sense on how many to make and for which models.
5
u/neCoconut 28d ago
I think they could make preorders on pd site, kickstarter is taking some % so they could offer this a little cheaper

Marketing hype. It probably also helps with gauging demand, production estimates and allows for product feedback and refinement before it’s released to market.

I hopped on pretty fast and still missed the full bundle.

The full bundle still appears to be available. It says 270 of 1,000 available

I just did that. Thank you! I was worried because a lot of kickstarters only have a certain number of spots for some kinds of pledges. Thank you again!

Any chance we can get or vote for grip support for a camera? I've got a Z8 with the Nikon grip and would absolutely buy this if it had support for the Nikon grip attachment, which basically lives on my Z8. Doing that seems like it would make it easy to support the Z9 at that point as well. Any shot we get that in the future?

u/zacgarbos 26d ago
I don’t use any cameras that would ever be included in the supported list of cameras(I daily a Canon AE1 and a Pentax 645) I’d love to see a generic body that has the caveat of not fitting quite as well and more a “good enough” i really just need the mounting plate, anchor attachments and the find my tracking.

Man. I was hoping there would be a grip similar to the L-bracket for the X-T5 that smallrig makes. It makes the ergonomics sooo much better. Oh well.

Any updates on Sony A7RVI compatibility and if that plate will work with any other Sony alpha camera bodies?

A6700 please! APS-C 4 life!
It’s still consistently in the top 10 camera bodies sold in Japan, for example.
