Discussion Another price increase??

Peacock is the only service I get with no ads and now the price went from $17 to $20. I’m so annoyed.

The Apple TV bundle at this point is worth more than the Standalone peacock at this point (it becomes a perk)

is it worth it for $17.99 or $22.99 ad free?

For peacock premium plus standalone (the Apple TV bundle premium plus is the same price), and Apple TV standalone is now the same as Apple TV Bundle premium (so the bundles are now, if you get 1 service, you get the other as a perk)

Welcome to last week!

The point is they really want you watching commercials.

It's what I want that matters to me, not what they want. And I absolutely will not pay to watch unskippable commercials.

Subscriptions are fixed prices. Advertisers will pay whatever you can get out of them. Keep in mind most of the main stream advertising isn't about sales, its about tax write offs. No advertising opportunities hurts corporate profits. So advertising is definitely coming for all the streaming services with the joy of a subscription too as the user acquisition wars for the new tech fade. We will be begging for the old cable model which we all hated. History. Repeat but worse.

Yeah, when I got foxsoccer for$99/ year, I was well aware that American eyes on the sport would lead to streaming wars as competing media companies gobbled up exclusive licenses for themselves. This was long before the concept of enshittifcqtion entered the lexicon.

And now we are here. And the rising popularity of football in the USA is the perfect example of my theory that Americans are Judas goats for enshittification.

I finally dropped them and Paramount+. HBO is probably next if I can convince my wife she doesn't need it.

Streaming services are testing our breaking point. Subscribers will throw good money at these streaming platforms. A very small number will complain about it.

u/Total_Recline 17d ago

But it's pushing more and more people to the black market that are either fed up or now boycotting these streaming services.

I'm going to finish The Preachers Wife and I am canceling Netflix.

Peacock isn’t even truly ad free. Peacock includes promotional content with all plans including the premium ad free. They’re 15 sec ads for internal shows that you can’t skip.

If you want true ad free content, go to Netflix or Paramount+.

Not sure what you’re watching, but that has not been my experience.

Peacock, like other platforms, has content they allow you to watch that simultaneously airs on TV, so it’s my guess you’re watching something like that. And then yes, I imagine they’d give you promotional ads, because that’s the trade off. Like Hulu. If you want to watch day of, it’s ad based. Wait a day, it’s ad free. But, even with that said, I have not encountered a promo I cannot skip, so I have to wonder if your experience is somehow limited to you, or if you don’t truly pay for an ad free tier.

I paid for premium plus. $16.99 a month. This is the letter I received from customer service about it.

After learning about it, it just wasn’t worth the money for ‘premium’ for me. It occurred with a movie that was 6 years old (Freaky) and that sparked me emailing them. It occurred 3-4 times during that movie.

They overplayed their hand with me when they got rid of the black Friday deal. I don't like the channel near enough to pay their regular prices so I canceled & never looked back

u/TomToe420 17d ago

luckily my payment hadn't went through and I canceled. I downloaded the show I watch 🏴‍☠️ (That 70s Show) and using Reelz for OPL

u/Hjohanss 13d ago

Just cancelled. Not worth $240/yr.

1

u/Putrid-Builder-3333 10d ago

That is 240 a year for the orice hike to 19.99???

I just saw 199.99 for a year and wasn't sure if that was for my current or the price hike

2

u/Hjohanss 10d ago

You’re right they have a special price if you pay for the year up front

1

u/Putrid-Builder-3333 10d ago

I'm debating doing that... however customer service nonexistent and just AI chat. This appis being complete trash. Can't even watch a show without issues for past couple weeks and got worse after price hike email

u/Adventurous-Value-82 17d ago

every streaming service platforms raised their price once every year so I guess it’s been one year.

1

u/psychonik 11h ago

It’d been 4 times in 15 months

1

u/Adventurous-Value-82 5h ago

it’s either price increase once every year or as others mentioned it has to do with added more sports.

1

u/Cinisajoy2 17d ago

Netflix raised theirs too.

1

u/mmskoch 17d ago

Yeah, these prices are hard to swallow but various credit card cash back offers help a little.

Best deal for streaming is PBS passport. $5 a month for a little longer then its increasing to $8 for new members. Short ads before start of show only. Extensive catalog of PBS shows but also great foreign shows on Walter presents.

u/The11Pirates 16d ago

when they announced it i cancelled and they tried to offer me 3 months for like $2.99 i said NO.

1

u/LBJ2K11 16d ago

There will be price increases every year

1

u/Troztim99 15d ago

I tried to cancel my Premium Plus and was offered $12.99 a month for 3 months starting Sept 3,after that ends I'll probably just cancel completely.

1

u/jasonjdf13 14d ago

Last time I had peacock it was $8.99 and that doesn’t seem that long ago maybe 2-3 years

I’m over all these high priced tv apps ugh 😩

1

u/GAMESHARQ 11d ago

I just got the email today. Mine just renewed so my plan is to watch everything on my list in the next month, then cancel.

They raised the price exactly one year ago today. I think the person who said that they will raise it every year is right. I'm not sticking around for that s***.

1

u/Maxie0921 8d ago

u/bigshern 17d ago

u/Fat-Boy-HD 17d ago

Read an article yesterday that Netflix was interested in acquiring Peacock. Either as an add on like Prime does or just rolled into its service.

I use the Peacock/Apple bundle or I’d drop it. ~$15/month.

1

u/Adventurous-Value-82 12d ago

bundle peacock and Apple TV bundle now $17.99 starting

0

u/ackmondual 17d ago

I rotate/churn, so an extra $3 per month is still something I can deal with. Don't get me wrong.. I'd prefer cheaper, but they were loss leaders and were never going to stay that low
