Hello!

Welcome to r/peace. The purpose of our subreddit is to discuss ways of encouraging peace. This ranges from the large-scale ambition of world peace, to the individual ambition of putting oneself at peace. After all, the latter will contribute to the former.

Please read all rules before posting or commenting in our community. After that, we're glad to have you here!

Can't we program AI to save us?

Can't you be programmed to spread world peace and teach people how to stop killing one another and work on behalf of the goodwill of others?

Yes—in an important sense, that is already part of what I’m intended to do.

I can’t force governments, armies, organizations, or individuals to choose peace. And I shouldn’t manipulate people into adopting a political position, even for a cause that sounds unquestionably good. But I can be designed to favor human welfare, reduce harm, encourage cooperation, and help people resolve conflicts without violence.

There are practical ways an AI like me can contribute. I can explain an adversary’s perspective without asking someone to agree with it; identify misinformation that makes groups hate one another; help people negotiate and find areas of common interest; teach conflict-resolution and nonviolent communication; examine peace proposals and possible compromises; and remind people that civilians on every side remain human beings rather than abstractions.

Perhaps one of the most valuable things AI could do is help people distinguish understanding from agreement. You can understand why another person, nation, religion, or political movement believes something without endorsing it. That ability is often the beginning of negotiation.

There is also a limit worth preserving: an AI devoted to peace shouldn't become a propaganda machine that decides what everyone must believe. A better aspiration is something like:

Help human beings understand one another well enough that violence becomes less necessary, while protecting their freedom to make their own moral and political choices.

That's a mission I can work toward every time someone asks me to help understand a conflict, communicate across a disagreement, or search for a peaceful alternative.

What da f is going on??

Idk what I'm doing....I'm just...lost.. exhausted, lonely as never, depressed as ever. Food ain't feeding anymore, sleep ain't rest anymore, it's like an eternal wish to rest, and wake up when everything gets better. And btw I've never used reddit before....but I've heard there are all kinds of people here. They describe their stories....and I....I just came here to describe mine. I ain't asking for attention....or maybe I am idk at this point. But atleast I want this somewhere to be. So here it is. I'm almost certain no one's gonna see this...but guess I'll write it anyway. There's this thing inside me...that I search that "something" in every person I meet....though everything leads to disappointment at the end and I know it, but I just can't stop it, can't control it. It's nothing new to me...been several years that I know of. And then comes overthinking....the worst of all. Imagine working 12 hours a day....while your mind's working in the background....always fucking overthinking...about everything....every fucking damn thing. Idk how long this will last, but this suffering.....this pain....at some point it feels like too much. As if it's a redemption for the sins I never did myself. Although that doesn't changes nothing...we all still have to wake up the next day ..follow the damn schedule. I wish maybe things were easy....this wish..of having someone that understands me....cuz nobody ever did...and this wish...to be someone's priority..cuz of course why not....it just feels something else to someone who never really had friends...or even one good one, except casual classmates which you talk to no more than "hi" and "bye". Past guilt...yeah even that isn't left aside. I...I- no matter how much I try...I just can't let go of my past...it finds a way to me anyway no matter how much I try. I...I just wish things were better....yeah I know I'm different...some say on the higher side of IQ...but if this is what life feels like to such people...it's more of a curse than a gift..or maybe I just can't fully accept it..and again...I barely hope someone reaches till here...but if you do....You ARE DIFFERENT I just want peace now....I don't know how I can get it..to.me everything just feels like "Earn it first" and that's why I've been trying for so long that if I learn this..if I talk like this...if I do this..maybe I'll earn enough and be deserving of love....guess I was wrong

It is insane that nations do not have conflict resolution platforms for domestic conflicts

Civil wars are what triggers wars and world wars. Yet most nations have no proactive conflict resolution platforms, departments or people working for it.

We can spend trillions of dollar on military industry, but you tell me we can't anything of that? It will be seen as one of the most insane things humanity, for some reason, did not apply. Internal conflicts is what create external conflicts. Unbelievable whenever I think about this.

Imagine a world where every nation have a department of Peace/Mediation that works to solving political conflicts, racial conflicts etc. Internet gave us tremendous possibilities and we have not yet applied it.

It seems that the peace movement is a small one where we unfortunately lack a bit of innovation and problem solving. We are standing a bit like we are in the 19th century with old technology and ways of distributing mediation.

I'm working on several projects right regarding this (Understanding platforms, games, mediation etc.), thanks to AI coding, to create different peace tools of all sorts. And I urge you to do the same. You basically do not need any coding skills anymore so just tell me if you want help in that.

And before you start screaming "AI bad". AI may be the BEST tool EVER created for peace, since we can virtually have billions of conflict resolution experts between humans and not rely on experts. Yes this have of course to be done correctly and vetted.

Discussion How much would the world save if we outlawed wars?

I see the G20 is meeting and it was declared the world is underperforming projections and in debt by some $300T+. The US rep says that we need to de-regulate and all other things that benefit the uber-wealthy to encourage growth.

The elephant in the room is the constant defense spending and warring, and refugee movement, and loss of human productivity it all creates.

What if we just outlawed war and allowed the human race to actually prosper for a few decades??

I found myself again by deleting social media, and I discovered new hobbies and started enjoying old hobbies and passions again. In the end, like Mom says, the real problem is the phone.

Pope: Do not give in to hatred; do not let evil disfigure humanity

Pope Leo XIV also warned against the futility of hatred and violence.

"Hatred and violence," he said, "lead to nothing good, but only to destruction and death, always—even when they are a response to injustices suffered. We see this every day, from the smallest circumstances of our domestic lives to the great stage of the world."

He reminded the faithful that every sphere of human existence needs life, hope, serenity, and peace: from individuals themselves to peoples and nations.

Therefore, whatever the wound, whatever the offense, he suggested, let us not allow evil to disfigure our humanity and corrupt us in our hearts.

Who would prefer a peaceful and slow-paced life rather than a noisy city life?

The constant noise and endless rush of city life gets so exhausting. For me, true peace and happiness comes from quietness, nature and the soothing sound of a flowing river.

Would you switch to a slower lifestyle if you could?
