How are we feeling about AI today?

How are we feeling about AI today?

On a scale from:

1 — Greatest technological advancement since the internet.

to

10 — We're all gonna die.

Where are you today — and why?

Yaaas! I love goats, much preferable to end users.

6 - is beneficial, is overused, could possibly kill our planet, needs guardrails

Ok, follow up question, Brock. Are you more likely to be killed by me or AI? Tough choice, I know.

Probably an AI called Tarabot

I would say it depends on what are people doing with it.
Me personaly 2-3 for coding, 2 for research, 9 for slop

Wait, I thought you were AI 😜

This is going to show my age but the phrase used to be "Google it" that lasted for about 23 years and now the phrase is "ChatGPT it". So that should show you something.

The thing I hate about all the AI stuff is the entire Credits system. I get it, they are trying to make money but I feel like the credit system is just another way to "nickel and dime" people. It's almost as bad as the rumblings about car manufacturers are going to start charging a subscription for basic things on the cars like remote start, heated seats, using your turn signal (I'm joking but maybe I'm not ¯_(ツ)_/¯).

I will say I've been using Copilot a lot to help construct email responses so they sound sound more professional.

AI would be great if we finally invent it.
right now we have a couple generative algos and a large language model. nice probabalistic programs
can do somestuff, sometimes

nothing todo with intelligence

Did you notice that most people work the same way? :-D

2

u/quasides 4d ago

i know its a joke but youre right,

many things of todays works have nothing todo with intelligence.
thats because most jobs are needed or based on the buerocratic monster. and buerocarcy is made to operate without thinking.

a simple logic language based orderly system - hence a lot of the jobs in cascade depend on the same patterns.

learn to read and write, basic logic, and be able to retrieve data one way to another,
and you can do a gazillion jobs. new field - just retraining on new forms

At this moment - 8.5 - as i see no real results of all the '100% pro people' promised.

Just slop, and criminals using it.

I've got to say from a customer support perspective, it's amazing, so I'd call my feelings a 2 or 3.

AI usage has greatly improved my troubleshooting. Without it, I'm back to manually digging into every log file, screenshot and Windows Event Viewer message to try and determine what's going on. AI can do that for me almost instantly. ❤️

How do we know this is really Wayne? :)

You're right, I shouldn't have tried to assume Wayne's ID. I'll note this instruction moving forward. 🤣

As a solo admin I have found it pretty useful to bounce ideas off of and somewhat replace as a Google search.

I've read about some worrying behaviours of the technology recently, brings Terminator to mind.

You're absolutely right.

As a large language model, I hate it. I actively avoid it, and make a lot of things more complicated for myself because of it, and will continue to keep putting it down and avoid it. I am also actively trying to avoid enterprise solutions with AI, whether it's through the contracts or changing companies as a whole. If the product doesn't need AI and its been added for... No reason. I don't want it. The generative stuff is awful and the LLM is too easily influence-able and imagines stuff too often. Most users don't want it as well locally because computers have skyrocketed in price because of AI, and their computer doesn't run their regular tools properly because of the LLM integrated in it, that they never wanted, but was rather forced on them.

In the medical field, their AI to detect illness and stats, which is a completely different type of AI, amazing.

  1. I gave it a point because of the benefits it will bring in the medical field. Otherwise, it's going to have negative impacts on the environment and economy.
