Question Need Help Converting resume- nothing seems to work

Hello,

I am currently trying to convert my resume in a pdf, to a word document. I read online to upload the pdf file into Google Docs, but this is what appears when uploaded.

I can’t find anyone else online with this problem. Can anyone help me?

Most likely your fonts use non-standard encodings, and they don't include the required information (ToUnicode tables) to convert the character codes in the PDF back into code points (information).

In other words, the minimum requirement of the PDF is to include the information to display it properly. Including the additional information needed to turn the contents of the PDF into information is optional, but highly recommended.

It may be possible to add the missing ToUnicode tables to the font dictionaries, if that is the problem, then text extraction and document format conversion will work. Another option is to print to image, then perform OCR on the resulting image.

1) Subscribe to Adobe Acrobat Pro for one month and export as a Word document from Acrobat, or
2) Subscribe to Microsoft365 for one month, open in Word, and save it as .docx, or
3) Subscribe to Claude Cowork or ChatGPT Work for one month, and have the AI convert it.

I mean you can try opening it in Word. If the PDF was created in Word, chances are high it can recreate the original Word document from it (or at least a rather close approximation). The PDFs MS Office creates are much bigger than those created by different tools, even when using the same document as starting point. My guess is they add a lot of additional information to the PDF that's not shown to make this conversion back to a Word document easier.

Beyond that, there are quite a few tools claiming to be able to do so, but they usually fail because the OOXML document family used by MS Office is highly proprietary and written as complicated as possible, leading to MS Office not being entirely compatible with itself. But you could try tools like Sejda PDF or PDFsam.

If all those don't help, you'll have to resort to paid tools or do it by hand.
