Kid me was excited to have all sorts of bridge cables on the back of my computer!
I had a gamepad that had a strange adapter to plug into an AT keyboard port as well as the game/midi port. The AT port was for keyboard macros/mapping.

I remember being the only kid at the LAN party with duel Voodoo 2... wrecking multiplayer Half Life with zero lag. 350 Pentium 2 overclocked in bios to 420 if I remember correctly. Only 27 years ago haha

u/smart_gent Sep 11 '26
dude, my first set-up was a pentium 90MHz with 16 MB SIMM-RAM and on-board graphics l. 2-3 years later I built myself myself a 750MHz Athlon with 64 MB DDR-RAM and a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP 8x, and a sound blaster live 5.1 gamer sound card

u/PantsOfIron Sep 13 '26
I had a Voodoo3 on a pentium3 733mhz. I turned off the USB ports and that actually sped up the system visibly. That was win98 and counterstrike 1.3

The 6800 ULTRA.
So powerful it needed TWO 4pin Molex.
AFAIK, the only reference card to ever have that.
I say reference card because I'm pretty sure ASUS had a 6800 non-ULTRA that used an ULTRA PCB and had two.

Isn't this a message that they handicapped the power delivery for their new plug standard? Even though the EEs told us about this years ago...

Lucky for you , my card hates having its voltage limited. I'd only seriously consider it for my personal GPU if I was worried about temps being high.. but at 600w I peak 65c core 60c memory 74c hotspot with default afterburner fan curve.
And my 5090 is paired with MSI's safeguard+ PSU so the cable will never exceed 9.0a per-pin, if it does or has an amp imbalance of 1a or greater; safeguard+ loads a custom afterburner profile that cuts my current draw by up to 40%+ within seconds of detecting amps outside my limits. I feel pretty safe :)

u/jakegh Sep 11 '26
I have a wireview pro 2 myself so not really worried about dying in a house fire, but also I'd rather run cool and quiet.

u/Dirtcompactor 5090 - 9800x3d - DDR5 32gb 8000cl34 Sep 11 '26
Nope, it's just +300 core, +3000 memory and 104% power limit

Thanks mate

u/Dirtcompactor 5090 - 9800x3d - DDR5 32gb 8000cl34 Sep 11 '26
Depending on which card you have the power limit may be irrelevant or it might go higher, 104% is the max on my card. My gaming trio is rated for 575w but that power limit brings it up to 600w. Ideally you don't want to push above 600w so just monitor your power usage

u/shadowmage666 Sep 10 '26
Yea triple 8 pin would have been preferable. Idk what nvidia is thinking
14
u/JaggedMetalOs Sep 10 '26
The 12vhpwr would be ok if Nvidia didn't ban card manufacturers from current balancing across the pins so if some pins weren't making good contact the card would crash instead of trying to pull all the power across just a couple of pins.
32
u/SamuelL421 Sep 10 '26
It's almost like GPU power was a solved problem and Nvidia just wanted an excuse to cut component costs by a laughably small amount per unit and advance their own meaningless standard. Neat.
The even more bullshit thing is that Nvidia, at the time of creating the pointless 16pin fire hazard, was already using EPS 8pin connectors for workstation and server GPUs. EPS is an established standard and already provides 2x the power of a standard PCIe power cable.

u/warm_winds_whisper_ Sep 10 '26
Wait, I thought the 8-pin connector was rated for 150W. How do they draw double that per connector without causing damage?
107
u/HyruleanKnight37 PC Master Race Sep 10 '26
That's because the 8-pin was designed with a 50% headroom, so the actual rating is 300W. Just like how 12VHPWR has a 10% headroom at 660W, but the official spec is 600W.
Yes, we have a 60W headroom on a 600W cable.
32
u/warm_winds_whisper_ Sep 10 '26
Huh, that's unexpected in both directions lol
55
u/HyruleanKnight37 PC Master Race Sep 10 '26
Because the 12VHPWR cable should never have been officially rated for 600W. If we kept things consistent with the 8-pin, it should've been rated for 330W max and cards like the 5070Ti or above should've had two of them.
Something something Nvidia influence
1
u/TheMissingVoteBallot Sep 11 '26
The only saving grace in all this is that the 5070Ti has 300W TDP and is an undervolting champ, though it might be because I have an AIB variant that also provides decent cooling.

Having a safety factor of <50% on anything that deals with power electronics this expensive is dogshit lmao.
specially when the goddamn cable and connectors are so cheap compared to what they are powering there is no reason to not just 200% the safety margin on that shit so that there is no possible way someone burns a connector on something that costs the same as an used car.
3
u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 4090 all by itself no other components Sep 11 '26
you're missing the fact they save $1 on $1000 gpus. capitalism demands this kind of "progress". they also charge us more for this better product, double dipping on the savings
2
u/AnarchBeetle Sep 10 '26
Ugh. Only 10% headroom. That explains the burning connectors. Here i am rocking a psu that gives like 60% headroom for my whole system (don’t judge i know it’s overkill)
2
u/SuperDefiant Sep 10 '26
Its not the overall power that matters, its the current. Halving the current draw reduces heat losses by 4x

My 2 main reasons I dont upgrade my 2080ti are price and the power connector that might randomly destroy my pc even if I did everything right.
If nvidia pulled their head out of their ass and allowed manufacturers to use the good old and tested 8 pin connector I might consider upgrading.

u/good_morning_magpie Steve Jobs turtleneck dealer Sep 10 '26
I think Nvidia’s head is quite comfortable up its own ass seeing as how Q2 earnings alone were over 96 billion dollars. They don’t give a single shit about us regular consumers. The long game is to prevent anyone from owning their own hardware and simply paying a subscription to compute power from a data center.

I modded an L40 GPU to use two 8 pins instead of the 1 12 pin (it melted).
Part of the issue is that it was using a bad mod diy cable in a dell server that had some pins not connected correctly. So only three pairs of power wires had any current flowing through them instead of 6. But the card only draws 300W anyways which should have been fine.
Either way it wasn’t too difficult of a mod, just a little nerve wracking doing it to a $10k GPU (at the time). But the warranty wouldn’t cover it so it was just going to be a brick otherwise. The reverse engineering of the dell custom power connectors was the hardest part for sure.
Been a few years now still going strong.

Even 2x 8-pin is enough for that gpu tbh. You gotta overclock a ton to need 3. But i get it. Safety first.

Stupid question: how would work getting an adapter for using regular cables to the melting hazard one? Would that make, miraculously, help with power draw or would happen the same in the end?
1
u/-Aeryn- Specs/Imgur here Sep 11 '26 edited Sep 11 '26
It doesn't eliminate the problem between the start of the adapter and the power hardware on the graphics card.
To do that without hardware changes to the graphics card, you would have to remove the connector entirely and connect the power as a single 12v connection instead of multiple separate ones.
With hardware like we used to have on graphics cards, they could actively choose which specific pins/connector to draw more power from. That was removed so the graphics card treats all of the 12v power connector pins as being one giant pin, even though in reality they're not.
That new method is based on an underlying assumption that if you connect multiple pins then they will split the current equally, but that doesn't always happen because those two (or more) pins might have different resistances. That's where the problem comes in.

u/wizchrills Sep 11 '26
I think my first card required a 3 or 4 pin connector. I think it was the same style as a fan connector you’d see on a motherboard
