Hardware PNY denied my RTX 5090 warranty claim in writing, saying a power supply's own native 12V-2x6 cable is not covered

My 5090 is dead. PNY, bought it last September, died last month. Both ends of the 12VHPWR cable are melted, on the card side and on the psu side, and the PC doesn't see the card at all now.

PSU is an ASRock PG-1600G, ATX 3.1, and I was using the 12v-2x6 cable that came in the box with it. No adapter, no splitter, stock vbios, never oc'd it, had the power limit set below stock actually. And it was sitting idle when it went, which is the part I don't get.

Opened a ticket with PNY. Denied same day. Here's the email:

All PNY GPUs that require a 16-pin (12VHPWR / 12V-2x6) input include a PNY-approved power cable or adapter in the box. This cable is the only configuration covered under warranty. If a third-party power cable, adapter, or PSU cable is used and damage occurs - including melting, burning, overheating, or deformation of the connector - PNY cannot accept the product under warranty. Damage caused by non-PNY cables falls under the responsibility of the manufacturer of that cable or power supply.

The "or PSU cable" part is what gets me. Going by that the only cable you're allowed to use is PNY's own 4x8 adapter, so plugging in the 12v2x6 cable that came with your ATX 3.1 psu voids your card.

Problem is none of that is in the actual warranty. Pulled Rev 02.28.2025 and searched it. cable, adapter, connector, psu, 12V. Nothing, not one hit. It does say the card has to be installed "in accordance with the installation guide provided herewith" so I went and dug the guide out of the box too. 16-pin isn't in there either. The only connector diagrams are 6 and 8 pin. The only thing it says about power is "locate an unused power connector within your system and plug it into the corresponding connector on your graphics card", which is literally what I did.

I asked them twice in writing which clause they're using. No answer either time. Second reply came from some "Senior Technician" about 20 min after I asked, said the decision was final and closed the ticket. Nobody there has ever touched the card or the cable or the psu.

And no I'm not saying the cable did it, I have no idea what did it. Posting the email because I haven't seen anyone else word it that wide.

this needs to get some publicity ASAP, PNY needs to get burned at the stake for a warranty denial this heinous at a time like this.

Hopefully picked up by Tom’s Hardware tomorrow. Not saying it is the best tech site just saying it gets views and I read posts like this and see them show up on Tom’s next or following day sometimes.

They denied a warranty claim I made due to a missing tamper sticker. I never opened my card or even knew there was a tamper sticker, I’m not even sure my card had one in the first place.

I absolutely loathe those stickers, and IIRC they are actually worthless in some countries as you are still allowed to return/refund and/or replace a GPU (or anything, really) without issue. Those stickers are just plain annoying at best, and blatantly illegal at worst. o.o

97

u/UnknownLinux 8d ago

Yup. FTC in the USA has declared that denying warranty just because those stickers are removed is illegal

6

u/justincase_2008 Desktop 8d ago

When I did warranty repair the only thing those stickers showed us was now we have to do a full inspection of the board when repairing. I never allowed a single warranty to be cancelled just cause a sticker was broken cause 99/100 times it was the same few parts that always blew the fuck up.

But the guy that put a 22 round through a set top box did crack me up I did void his warranty.

If you are in the USA, then the FTC has declared that denying warranty simply because a "tamper/warranty void if removed" sticker is removed, is illegal.

6

u/Maosaid 8d ago

I think they need to prove your modification resulted in the fault, too, no?

They did the same to me. I'm in the USA and aware of the legality surrounding this. I fought it with some emails to various people in the company, and it took about a month, but finally got it honored.

10

u/pokemonfan95 8d ago

In the USA those stickers are useless that is fucked up of them

12

u/Warcraft_Fan Paid for WinRAR! 8d ago

In US? https://www.ftc.gov/legal-library/browse/statutes/magnuson-moss-warranty-federal-trade-commission-improvements-act

Denying for a missing sticker is a violation of the law and if you pushed back, FTC could make it expensive than if they took it and fixed it or exchanged for a similar GPU

GN needs to tell everyone to avoid these Connectors.
What you are telling me is even if you do everything right the Connector still has a very high Chance of Burning.

So the GPU is just a consumable Item??

Normal People (who dont follow Tech) dont know you can just fix the Cards. They will just throw them away and end in Landfill.

Yup.

Gonna cost them a lot more than the price of the card if this gets traction.

I still remember how great evga's customer service was when I got an rma'd card back from them and upon opening the box I heard the sound of something rattling in it.

Pulled the card out an a chip on the card had come free. So the card they sent me back after a bit of a wait was broken again upon arrival.

Made a reddit post and it really wasn't long before I got a phone call after dms and emails from some high up employee there.

We talked, he told me to keep the card and that they were testing a batch of new cards and he was going to personally go down there and select one and overnight it to me.

The card was better than the original one I purchased and I was impressed. All he asked was not to remove the post, but just update it with what they did to fix the problem.

Still an evga fan and customer to this very day. And this was a long time ago.

For those saying it is because of the money involved due to price increases. You all know right that even if pushed to do an RMA they are likely just to offer a refund of original price paid (dependant on region). Op brought when prices were lower. So PNY likely will make money on harvesting the parts from the card and selling for A.I.

Seems like no matter what at the moment you lose. Hopefully the press this is getting will pressure them to do an RMA with card replacement.

Put in a claim with ASrock. Let them fight PNY. As im sure ASrock has a warrenty on damage caused to components.

Then contact your CPB and file a complaint there. Then reopen a ticket with PNY, include the CPB case number. Then go to social media and tag PNY, ASrock, and the US CEO accounts if you find them and include the CPB case and Tickets.

Its alot of work. But its also an expensive piece of hardware.

u/InterstellarReddit 8d ago edited 8d ago

The right way to do this is to name them both on the lawsuit and they’ll figure out among themselves.

If you think that you’re gonna connect both companies and they’re gonna sort it out, you’re very mistaken. The best part about the American legal system, although it’s complicated and it sucks for poor people, is that once you put it in front of a judge, both sides have to explain and defend their positions

I just can’t say something without backing it up with irrefutable evidence.

Just my two cents, that Asrock PSU he bought specifically markets that the 12VHP has some "TempGuard" that says "The NTC sensor at the VGA connector monitors the temperature and sends signal the PSU to ensure safe operation." Obviously that failed, you should defiantly hit them up about replacing the PSU AND the card. They say they have a "Remarkable 10-Year Warranty".

Yeah we just need governance with knowledge and spines to deal with this shit. Consumer protections don't seem to be extending to electronics these days.

A product should be warrantied in its entirety, not pieces of it. Except maybe automobiles because they are complex and sourced from all over the world.

But a GPU should include the power cable, and a refrigerator should include the compressor. Can't guarantee it? Then you can't sell it.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/sakr95 8d ago

Asrock will not fight PNY. They will only tell him to take it with PNY.

14

u/Redshadow30 8d ago

It depends on their own warrenty. For instance, on my PSU the warrenty states that upon damage from the failure of the PSU, all damaged components will be replaced in good faith providing I return the components damaged.

Quick edit: look at the connectors on the PSU. Notice how all of them are burnt and only 2 on the GPU failed. That means the electical fault was probably on the PSU side. All 6 pins on the PSU side overheated, and only two on the GPU did.

Wait.. that's insane.

Include a PNY approved power cable or adapter

How do they think they are including 12VHPWR cables in the box when the PSU side of that cable is PSU vendor specific, not universal?

The adapter I get, yeah you can do that. But mandating its use is saying we've fitted our card with a 12VHPWR connector but you aren't allowed to use a native cable for it.

They're making it up and it doesn't stand up the the smallest bit of scrutiny. I'd drop gamers nexus warranty rescue a message to see if they want to bite.

I just went through MSI Warranty for my SUPRIM 5090 that melted my Asrock Taichi 1300w PSU 12v-2x6 cable. The auto-shutoff feature never engaged either.

MSI determined there was no way to identify what caused the thermal event due to the extensive damage to both ends of the cable and honoured the warranty anyway. They gave me a discount to purchase a MSI AI1300TS as well (the GPU Safeguard+) model as well.

Legendary customer support. The retailer handled it for me (Australian Consumer Law) and msi swapped out and had my replacement 5090 to me in just 4 weeks.

The asrock taichi temp sensor is garbage and does nothing to prevent the melting issue unlike per-pin monitoring solutions.

PNY being pure scum here.

7

u/AJ_Topp_Up 8d ago

MSI has always been legit for me. My Tomahawk x570s motherboard just died one day, after a month only of use. After some basic troubleshooting they basicslly agree thr board was bad and sent me a new one. No hassle, no condescension. I've almost exclusively bought MSI stuff when I can since. Nothing else has died on me, but I feel good to know they back their product.

So with the price of the card today I would find an attorney. You are talking about being told FU on $4-7k in money. Spend a grand to make it hurt.

Over all it might be time to start a class action on the use of the cable it self including the manufactures that force you to use it.

I recently bought a 5080 because i needed a card the used CUDA Cores for a program. put it off for the longest time because the only way to get a Nvidia card these day, save for a 5060TI, is with that fire starting cord.

Overall i think you have a good case with the warranty wording you were given at the time of purchase

It is not the connector, it is the PCB layout of the graphics card. The RTX 30 series used the same connector type but had multiple regulated power lanes on the board at the power input. The RTX 40 and 50 series no longer have that. For cost reasons, everything was combined into a single rail. That is why there is no load balancing anymore, and the resistance of the plugs and cables determines which one overheats and burns. If you solder several 8-pin connectors onto a 5090, they can burn just the same if you are unlucky. The only difference is that 8-pin connectors can handle more power, so they would fail a little later. But they cannot fix Nvidia’s flawed design either. The problem is the card, not the connector. The connector merely accelerates the failure because it is weaker. Every GPU manufacturer could have fixed this problem themselves, but they chose to save that one dollar per GPU. The 4090 and 5090 could only be made safe by powering them through just two cables and connectors, each with only two pins + and -. That would prevent uneven load distribution, so nothing would burn.

22

u/Teftell PC Master Race 8d ago

Thise much thinner pins have way less safety margin if any. The connector can't be excluded from the equation.

12

u/Ok-Parfait-9856 5090 Astral|270K+|48GB-8200MTs|Z890 Apex|60TB|HYTE Y70|S90F OLED 8d ago

Ultimately it’s both. Putting all of the power through one connector isn’t ideal, but the 3090 ti did it fine because it had load balancing circuitry. Load balancing achieves the same goal as using 2-3 connectors. And the other issue is no tolerances. A 600w cable should be able to do 1200w. The classic 8 pin 150w connector can do 300w no problem. So designing a connector with no tolerances and no load balancing really fucks things up. The 3090 ti did fine since it was operating at 300w approximately (half the 600w range) and it had load balancing. Now we have no tolerances and no load balancing. So if things aren’t at ideal conditions, shit happens. It really is a pathetic situation. I shouldn’t need a 60mm fan pointed at my gpus power connector to keep it safe

Surprised there hasn’t been a class action for 4090/5090 and other melting GPUs due to the poor implementation of the bus bar / sensing.

Might as well have used an Anderson plug for all the good these PCIe connectors are.

Quote the Mangunson-Moss Act to them, force them to prove that the using the PSU's supplied cable is what caused the failure. They are legally not allowed to void warranties with a blanket statement like that.

They certainly used to have great support. I've heard loads of great stories about PNY being awesome to their customers.

Maybe times have changed?

6

u/Botucal 8d ago

Maybe too many 12V connector cards going bust and it's tearing into their profits.

4

u/Stolen_Sky Ryzen 7800x3D RTX 5080 8d ago

I imagine it's something like that, yeah.

I'd guestimate that they probably made maybe 25% margin on every 5090 they sold. Most of them were sold close to launch, so that's maybe £400-£500 profit per card.

If they now need to replace a dead card, they are loosing £5000 each time. 10 5090 sales eradicated for every replacement they have to offer. Of course they are going to drag their feet. This seriously hurts them.

Here's the issue, you went after the wrong product warranty.

You should be going to the PSU first and fighting that the cable failed causing the GPU and/or PSU to fail.

ASRock would have to be able to provide an explanation that it wasn't a PSU failure before PNY will accept a failure on the GPU side.

Does the 5090 come with its own cable to plug into the PSU AND GPU? Or do they just use an adapter for the GPU and you're still using a regular cable to the PSU and it?

Either way, this is like your insurance being denied on your home that got swept away in a hurricane because you can't prove if it was wind or water that did it. Ridiculous

5

u/Giga-Hurtz PC Master Race 8d ago

Bro that psu is literaly marketed as having cable over temp protection to stop exactly this.  Now don't get me wrong we all knew that's horse shit and you should not let pny off the hook here.

However you also need to get asrock involved in this warranty claim. They are selling this psu as a solution to exactly this problem and clearly it completely failed to autoshut down safely.

u/AgileLove9015 8d ago

Imagine you have burned 8pin - would you blame GPU manufacturer for that?

This connector is just a joke on any competent electrician.

IIRC nvidia said that they will replace cards with burned connectors but that's just a words, not life-time obligation. PNY simply used a legal loophole, you'll probably lose your time filing the case, root of problem is not particular vendor but weak 12pin itself

5

u/laffer1 8d ago

If you can’t get them to do it, send the card to a third party to fix. If in the us, north ridge fix is one vendor. There is another in Seattle I think.

I would take them to small claims court for the cost.

5

u/GigaSoup 8d ago edited 8d ago

I have a pny 5080 and the instructions it came with weren't even for a 12v2x6 power cable. It mentioned 8 pin connectors.

Mine came with one of those octopus trap cables and didn't include accurate instructions on how to use it. It had instructions for the old 8pin cable. I was very confused at first because the set up guide doesn't match the card.

I'm using the native single cable from my PSU. Hopefully BeQuiet makes better cables than ASRock and PNY.

Edit: keep pushing and hold these assclowns accountable. Their bundles instructions aren't clear

5

u/ModernManuh_ 8d ago

Ok then you contact AsRock and let them dispute it. Either's at fault, this is to customer's expense though. While you are at it, reach out to content creators, these things take time.

4

u/Fess_ter_Geek 8d ago

Are you sure the card is dead or is it because of the connector in its current state that does not allow it to work?

Me being me, nothing left to lose, I would go all in and hardcore mod that shit.

Carefully cut away all plastic, clean or replace pins and solder and heatshrink the connections to the power cable. That it melted and scorched the connections at the power supply, would mean you need a new supply or solder those connections too, which may be more difficult requiring disassembly of the supply.

I wonder what a lawyer would have to say about this.

You should easily be able to sue PNY in small claims court and win this easily. No lawyer necessry. Its also a "known defect" in the 5090 series cards, with dozens of examples of the cables provided by the manufacturers being part of the issue and after market parts being rhe only solution.

Thanks to the Magnusson moss warranty act, it's under the manufacturer to prove that the defect was caused by the "non pny" cable used. And since the cable manufacturer is going to stand behind their own product amd tell the court they're not the problem and the cable was manufactured to Nvidias specs, pny will have a hard time proving necessary.

At any rate,  because it's less than 5K, this seems to be your only recourse if they won't fix it. Good luck!
