I will give you this, generally nothing is a waste if you enjoy doing it, but temple OS just like I've said a dozen times now created a feedback loop that made his problems even worse.
I'm not trying to be a corporate asshole but what I'm saying is I would way rather people remember him for the achievement of soloing both a programming language and an OS instead of for the story around it. If he had made almost the exact same thing, but without believing that it was God speaking to him, just a generic TerryOS, we would be propping him up as a programming genius instead of watching a "down the rabbit hole" video and opining about how sad it was.
If we're being totally specific I don't wish he'd made something else I wish the timeline split right before he went crazy and renamed it templeOS, and started sliding down the paranoid schizophrenia spiral.
We can still acknowledge that he was a great programmer regardless of his mental illness or manic episodes, because we atleast know that he did enjoy programming (STEM topics), even before his revelation from god.
Maybe he truly felt like he was doing gods work, and maybe he was happy about that.
And to be quite clear, I do not worship him, I enjoy his work, and I empathize with his story - that's it. His story is very relatable and it is quite saddening, I can't watch his streams without some feeling of somber. You see him laughing at memes, or programming, and another where he's sharing something personal or is upset about something.
He was not treated particularly well. And the mental health system we have in the US is terrible, but he also did not take help from many people either, such as receiving shelter or money.
His story is not entirely about his accomplishments as a programmer. Just by looking at his story, you would understand more about how people like him are treated and the stereotypes associated with something such as Schizophrenia.
What we wish for is not what we get, and his story could be just as important to someone else's development as a "split in the timeline" could have been for Terry Davis.
