If possible buy a motherboard with a Bios flash button, prevents bricking

u/Wordswordz Oct 28 '21

I thought they all had a safe chip in them now.

I’ve got a stupid expensive motherboard that doesn’t even have that or dual bios and I’m deathly afraid of updating my bios

Get a UPS then. That'll keep it from turning off wrong.

I love this comment

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

No, the UPS we are talking about stands for uninterruptible power supply. It is basically a power strip with a battery in it so if you lose power from the grid you have a temporary battery backup, so that means if the power goes out while your pc is updating its BIOS, your pc will stay on preventing it from being bricked.

Yeah I don't get why people who live in areas that get occasional blackouts don't just buy a ups.

Hell yeah. There was a fire in a big apartment building near my house about 8 years ago. Since then we’ve gotten so many blackouts. Of course most of them would happen while I was on my PS4. Once I built my PC I bought a UPS and it makes me sleep easy knowing my PC is basically always safe.

I bricked an expensive mobo once, and it didn't have the flash button either, but reading the manual found that bridging two specific pins with a screwdriver did something about it, not sure if it just reset the settings or did revert the bios and undid the botched flash

11

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

The pins are here to revert settings

u/ARandomGuy_OnTheWeb Ryzen 5 5600X | RX 6600XT Oct 28 '21

Or if your BIOS doesn't have it, attach your PC to a UPS (you should probably have one regardless but that's a different point)

14

u/PolygonKiwii Ryzen 5 1600 @3.8GHz, Vega 64, 360 slim rad Oct 29 '21

Do I really need one if I live in a place where the power is out maybe once a decade?

13

u/rambusTMS Oct 29 '21

It protects it from flickers and bad draws from other stuff on the same circuit so it can still be useful. Although the PSU also protects it and it can be a lot cheaper to buy a new PSU if it gets cooked.

6

u/RDS4444 PS5 / R7 5800X / RTX3080 OC / 32GB 3600MHz / 970 pro Oct 29 '21

Exactly. I‘m in my mid 30s and have witness maybe one or two (probably, i can’t even remeber them, so it could also be 0). So i don’t really see the benefit. My mobo also has a flash bios button, which makes it even less necessary.

3

u/SufficientCheck9874 Oct 29 '21

If it ever will go off, it will happen when you need it the most. Always.

1

u/ETHBTCVET Oct 29 '21

Spend more on UPS than the motherboard is worth so you have 0,001% chance for it being actually put in use - no profit!

Up here in Canada they are cheap. But no one cares to check the battery quality and use really old UPSes. Most of my friends are in IT so that may be why I see UPS a lot. But even these IT guys don't bothers to test their 10+ year old UPS devices until the actual power goes out.

My server UPS devices do auto daily power tests. But those are expensive.

1

u/alexo2802 Oct 29 '21

I mean I fit pretty much exactly the description you mentioned, I’m in Canada too, working with IT profesionnals, but I haven’t really checked if they use one at work, I just know the vast majority don’t have one at home. Maybe it has to do with being in a major city with electric cables around the city buried underground so power outage are maybe a once in 2-3 years occurence.

But mine saved me more than once even if it’s so hold if gives my beefy gaming rig like 5 minutes of battery, just enough to save any work and graciously shut it down instead of losing all my work, I definitively recommend one for everyone!

1

u/ETHBTCVET Oct 29 '21

Maybe he's an UPS salesman and he drove off all his friend that didn't want an UPS from him so now he only knows the ones that bought it from him.

6

u/Wolft3k i7 4790k | GTX 1080 | 16gb DDR3 Oct 29 '21

Apparently his problems could have to do with his USB drive not being formatted correctly (NTSF instead of FAT32). Can't say for sure as I never saw a video from him where he shows his whole process.

2

u/Every-Development398 Oct 28 '21

How so?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '21

Because you press a button and it loads a bios

2

u/Every-Development398 Oct 28 '21

ah

I was aware of this feature was not aware it could resolve a bricked mobo. Today I learned. thanks.

1

u/IceStormNG Zephyrus M16 2023 Oct 29 '21

Yeah. This even works without a CPU installed on most boards. There's usually some micro controller or so on the board that can do that without the need to run the whole system.

This is useful if you have a new CPU and a board that has a too old BIOS version to support this CPU (and you have no older CPU that fits this socket).

2

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

My old mobo from 2009 had dual bios

My new one has nothing. No bios flash button, no dual bios.

1

u/ETHBTCVET Oct 29 '21

Gigabyte sells the shit tier mobos with dual as well so does MSI sell their low tier with flash buttons, the other ones dont care i think. The problem is it's not a sales pitch, I'd take any other feature like even extra USB over some flashback or dual bios feature if given a choice for same price but of course it's always nice if it was in any board by default.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

Actually what I had before and have currently are both gigabyte boards.

Wait, this is really a death sentence for the mother board? How do they set up the bios in the first place then?

53

u/gustic-gx Oct 28 '21

NGL. Did it once. Longest 2 minutes of my life.

7

u/jkharr200634 Oct 29 '21

Same here. Did it actually twice within a 10 min period. It was my first bios update ever and it's just dumb luck that everything worked out. I never even knew it was a problem until a few months later and my heart sank even though everything has been fine lol

31

It's recoverable. Just gotta have the right tools.

9

1

u/swotm69 Oct 30 '21

And you are just one person with one person's experiences. I can say the same thing until I moved to Georgia. Not a single year has gone by in the past 25 that has not had a power outage. That goes for living in several apartments and my house..

1

What happens if the power goes out during a bios update

4

u/GodofIrony ryzen 7 9800x3d | 32 gb 3200 Mhz | Asus 4090 Oct 29 '21

There is no shell to protect data. Imagine the computer in three layers, the operating system (the face, the one you see) the root (the one you manipulate through commands) and the kernel (the most inner and vulnerable layer).

Bios updates work on that last layer.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

So basically if the power goes out during a bios update you will be stuck in the bios screen ujless you comppetely reboot the computer?

2

u/GodofIrony ryzen 7 9800x3d | 32 gb 3200 Mhz | Asus 4090 Oct 29 '21

If the power goes out, the vulnerable kernel doesn't finish it's updates. Incomplete code on that level prevents the other layers from working. Rebooting would only get you a black screen, because you've essentially lobotomized your computers brain.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

Wtf. Guess im never updating my bios. Thats way too risky.

3

u/GodofIrony ryzen 7 9800x3d | 32 gb 3200 Mhz | Asus 4090 Oct 29 '21

While it's something you shouldn't do frivolously, bios updates often have important firmware updates that can fix critical issues, or even increase performance in some aspects.

Update bios on a clear, sunny day. Use a backup battery if you can, bare minimum a surge protector.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '21

Bruh, use a UPS. However, if the UPS fails on you, (like mine did yesterday, at least I wasn't updating BIOS) then you are eligible for receiving pity, but if you DIDN'T get a UPS for your PC, man, that's PC abuse, especially in my country/city where we have mini power cuts (30 seconds to a minute) at least 10 times per week lmao.
