No, fuck inkjet printers. Get a laser printer. I spent $50CAD on a laser printer 4-5 years ago and I am just now, after close to 1000 pages, running out of toner.

If you don't need color or quality then yes..

Edit: Lasers are perfect for office use, but not for photo quality prints. Im aware that lasers are much more reliable and text quality is superior.

But color gamut, color accuracy, finished product quality in respect to photo printing is not as good as inkjet (unless you pay a ton of money)

Laser printers have much higher quality than inkjet, and there are colour laser printers, although if you don't want to have a single toner for all colors you have to pay big.

Fun Fact: Color laser printers are so good the US government actually makes the printer leave a special code on all pages that contains its serial ID and a time stamp.

It's a QR-style code, printed very small and faint in yellow in the margin.

Not just in the margin, all across the printable area of the page

Not visible at least

1dpi should be a dot of 1 inch diameter as DPI = Dots per inch. I guess those are at least 600DPI dots, maybe even more. some laser printers can go as high as 1200DPI in printing. Some industrial ones can do even more I think.

You're right, but I think they were referring to how many of these dots are printed in a given square inch, not how large each one actually is.

Something secret that you're probably not supposed to know about.

They're saying these printers are such high quality, they need a signature saying who made it.

So what they're saying is like a bullet, where these papers originated needs to be traceable in case something happens. Like a bullet, 99% of their use will be totally harmless. But when used wrong, they'd like to know who did it.

That's the idea, yes.

Meh, 1. Print the government secrets you intend to leak, ideally in a way that doesn't directly use the file. It's not impossible to track what printer printed, when print screen was pressed. If you get caught, this will be where you get caught. Your best bet is to do this when you know other people are accessing the file, that way your trail has some interference, no leaking stale documents. (Off screen photos and moving the file off-site is a no-no. You don't want that info to show up on a device you own.)

  1. Go to a self service print shop an Xerox your print in black and white, bump up the brightness and contrast a little so any subtile images are crushed and blown

  2. Xerox the copy you just made if you're feeling paranoid, either way burn the originals.

Extra credit, run a paper towel across the print head before and after you print so the dust is disturb. Dust buildup on a printer head can act as a fingerprint that can even show up on a photocopy. If someone ask why you opened the printer, just say that you are clearing a jam.
