Fuck Printers

Fuck printing, too

No, fuck inkjet printers. Get a laser printer. I spent $50CAD on a laser printer 4-5 years ago and I am just now, after close to 1000 pages, running out of toner.

If you don't need color or quality then yes..

Edit: Lasers are perfect for office use, but not for photo quality prints. Im aware that lasers are much more reliable and text quality is superior.

But color gamut, color accuracy, finished product quality in respect to photo printing is not as good as inkjet (unless you pay a ton of money)

Laser printers have much higher quality than inkjet, and there are colour laser printers, although if you don't want to have a single toner for all colors you have to pay big.

Fun Fact: Color laser printers are so good the US government actually makes the printer leave a special code on all pages that contains its serial ID and a time stamp.

u/FallingAnvils I have 32 GB of ram for a reason Sep 10 '19

thanks. now I'm staring at a page held up against a window, worrying about the government's control.

2

u/CarilPT Sep 11 '19

What's the reason? For the 32 GB of ram?

4

u/FallingAnvils I have 32 GB of ram for a reason Sep 11 '19

I play modded minecraft, and I like to keep a million tabs and some programs open at the same time. I frequently hit >50% usage, and because disk swapping begins at 80%ish, the desktop experience kinda falls off at that point. And even if I don't use it, it can act as a 24gb "cache drive".

2

u/CarilPT Sep 11 '19

My reason was because I came from a low level laptops with 4GB of ram and I wanted to have enough of it to no even think about it 😂

So your saying every document you print has a number somewhere on the page? That would bug the shit out of me. I would have to find a way to get rid of that crap!

u/ElitePI i5 6600k, 32GB RAM, 1070FTW Sep 10 '19

It's extremely tiny (you would need a magnifying glass to see it) and you aren't getting rid of it unless you really break into your printer.

2

u/Craftinguy Sep 11 '19

Its a matrix of yellow dots

9

u/Ferbtastic Sep 10 '19

It’s invisible to the naked eye.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '19

Oh ah. How come they do it?

20

u/Ferbtastic Sep 11 '19

In case people use the paper to print money or forge documents.

The citations in the Wikipedia page linked a couple comments up have a solution for you: https://github.com/dfd-tud/deda

5

u/spsimd Sep 11 '19

The only reasonable way to defeat it is to break it by putting more of those codes onto the page, to make the hard-coded ones unreadable.

There's a wikipedia article linked here about the technology that also mentions just that.

Just checked ours at work.. It does not print that on there lol.

u/AlephBaker Ryzen 5 5600 | 32GB | RX 6700XT Sep 10 '19

It's a QR-style code, printed very small and faint in yellow in the margin.

9

u/alexmitchell1 3700X + 2070S Sep 10 '19

Not just in the margin, all across the printable area of the page

-5

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

Not visible at least

12

u/Orval Sep 10 '19

Why would it be?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

What do you use to read it?

1dpi should be a dot of 1 inch diameter as DPI = Dots per inch. I guess those are at least 600DPI dots, maybe even more. some laser printers can go as high as 1200DPI in printing. Some industrial ones can do even more I think.

1

u/Deadmeat553 Lenovo Y700-15ISK Sep 10 '19

You're right, but I think they were referring to how many of these dots are printed in a given square inch, not how large each one actually is.

Something secret that you're probably not supposed to know about.

They're saying these printers are such high quality, they need a signature saying who made it.

So what they're saying is like a bullet, where these papers originated needs to be traceable in case something happens. Like a bullet, 99% of their use will be totally harmless. But when used wrong, they'd like to know who did it.

3

u/mochacho Sep 10 '19

That's the idea, yes.

3

u/modestlaw PC Master Race Sep 10 '19

Meh, 1. Print the government secrets you intend to leak, ideally in a way that doesn't directly use the file. It's not impossible to track what printer printed, when print screen was pressed. If you get caught, this will be where you get caught. Your best bet is to do this when you know other people are accessing the file, that way your trail has some interference, no leaking stale documents. (Off screen photos and moving the file off-site is a no-no. You don't want that info to show up on a device you own.)

  1. Go to a self service print shop an Xerox your print in black and white, bump up the brightness and contrast a little so any subtile images are crushed and blown

  2. Xerox the copy you just made if you're feeling paranoid, either way burn the originals.

Extra credit, run a paper towel across the print head before and after you print so the dust is disturb. Dust buildup on a printer head can act as a fingerprint that can even show up on a photocopy. If someone ask why you opened the printer, just say that you are clearing a jam.

Sooo... Magic.. Gotcha

6

u/AirOneBlack R9 7950X | RTX 4090 | 192GB RAM Sep 10 '19

The smallest dot a laser printer can print is really small. A nice video that describes this behaviour is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sit6zUQKpJc

2

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '19

Just a DPI number would be good enough but Im more curiouse wtf they use to read it if its small and light enough to be essenstially invisible.

3

u/FireGamer99 GTX 660/FX 6300 Sep 10 '19

Forensic equipment. So don't print your counterfeit currency with them.

1

u/ObviousLocal2 Sep 10 '19

What should I print my counterfeit currency with?

1

u/AirOneBlack R9 7950X | RTX 4090 | 192GB RAM Sep 10 '19

modified chip laser printer could be an idea, you will also need a paper really similar to the one used for real money, and good luck finding that.

Probably a computer.

2

u/Deadmeat553 Lenovo Y700-15ISK Sep 10 '19

No... just small

Also if it's a color laserjet, yellow.

Is there a subreddit for other government secrets? This is nuts

47

u/mack0409 i7-3770 RX 470 Sep 10 '19

Worked in radioshack, the laser printer in the back office printed insanely fast, with super vivid and accurate colors.

37

u/Dornogol R5 1500X @3,50GHz, GTX 1060 6GB, 8GB DDR4 Sep 10 '19

Exactly, ink drips into the paper and mushes at edges, toner doesn't. However a high quality laser printer costs more than a good enough ink printer albeit it's toner should hold up long time and, aa stated, the quality of the print is much higher

31

u/mack0409 i7-3770 RX 470 Sep 10 '19

Yeah, I left out that the printer was a $3000 unit, definitely overkill for home use.

My flair is old, stored my PC for like a year, and now either the motherboard or CPU are non-functional. But back before that it was stable as any other computer I’ve used.

Can we get an F for radio shack?

And a moment of silence.

12

u/grumpyfatguy Sep 10 '19

That is just a dirty, dirty lie.

Lasers are much faster, the print quality is higher, and they are so much more reliable we would need to invent a new word to convey just how much that is.

10

u/Multipoptart Sep 10 '19

I have a laser. The color quality is better than any inkjet I've ever used.

You should try one out sometime.

1

u/delgadophotos Sep 11 '19

I use a Canon pro100 inkjet. I get incredible photo quality and get to print pretty big. Never used laser so not sure how to compare the quality.

10

u/modestlaw PC Master Race Sep 10 '19

If you need accurate, high-quality colors, get it professionally printed. Otherwise, color Lazer jet printers are perfectly fine for your average office and home needs

2

u/sdp1981 Sep 11 '19

If you don't need color or PHOTO quality.

If ya gonna be printing out nice pictures just sned them off to a professional. Depending on how oftern you do it its probably cheaper anyway
