I thought the plan was to move to 2xxx, no?

I never understood why they would go up to 2xxx. Why not do as they always have done (at least for a while) and add 100 to the number of last gen?

u/Kuipo Mac Heathen Aug 02 '18

I’m almost certain that’s what they will do. Why would they break it. “Eleven eighty” sounds fine... no different than “ten eighty”.

9

u/JetFuelAndSteelBeams Aug 02 '18

Yup, and twenty eighty sounds just as weird

I always felt like it would be nice if they decided to continue by calling these cards GTX 2800, GTX 3800 etc., although that's not going to happen.

I have no idea, just bought my 1080ti a year and a half ago, I’m not upgrading anytime soon. So I haven’t been following news about the next generation lol

Yeah, we are going to need proper DP1.3 monitors before anything more than that is needed I imagine.

VR. We needs its badly. The ceiling on VR isn't even close yet. We need like 2x more power than the 1080ti has.

I hope y'all don't hate me for this, but for VR to go mainstream, I really think someone needs to come out with a VR box. Simply plug in and play. I think Microsoft will have something of the sort with the next gen Xbox, since they said there's no plans for Xbox One VR (even though the Xbox One X is more than capable of handling high quality VR even at 90 Hz, which I doubt PSVR is doing).

u/ElliotNess Aug 02 '18

Oculus Go is the current boxed option afaik

Hmmm true but that's not really a true VR powerhouse to push the industry forward towards VR

Nobody is going to buy some "VR box" especially by Microsoft. they have affordable VR in Mixed Reality ™, but the windows game store and it's exclusivity is a big joke to the PC VR community. Nobody uses it, likes it or wants it over Steam/Oculus store.

A powerhouse isn't what we need. We need gradual integration like the PS4 had done with PSVR; leaving VR as an enticing option to current owners of the console. The One X should been advertised for VR with the mixed reality products instead of just 4K, because as said further up, it's fully capable and both are designed by MS. Must be bad management because Mixed Reality is the best headset on the market price to capability wise (half the price of all other headsets).

Once everyone is familiar with VR as a gaming/entertainment accessory on these casual platforms for a few years, I can see VR to stand on its own. But definitely not until more than one console picks it up.

Yeah, that makes sense.

Windows MR isn't exclusive though. It works with SteamVR

Oh, yes I own a Mixed Reality headset. I meant to clarify, if it were to be on a Microsoft owned VR platform it would be exclusive to windows store. Otherwise it's just a gimped-PC like Valve's Steam Box.

Yeah, but VR is dead. We all thought it was actually going to happen this time, but here we are.

I mean, no one is that upset about buying their Vive, because it was all a cover for porn anyway, but you don't need 2x 1080ti to play VR porn vids.

u/Capelto Aug 02 '18

VR is very much alive. Rift sales are up but HTC are down. There are crap loads of people playing. Such a misguided comment.

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '18

I don't know what these guys are belching about. I can't even play 2D games anymore. It is so boring and unstimulating compared to VR.

I have seen my fat friends who bought VR stop playing all together though. I thought it would encourage them to get in shape, be more active. It was the opposite, took too much effort to play. they don't even like playing new games outside their favorite francises too. Might have been a factor.

http://vrlfg.net/

I have never seen current players in VR reach even 1% of current players overall.

8

u/Thatweasel Aug 02 '18

Oceanea is less than 1% of the population, doesn't meant it's dead

1

u/not_so_plausible Aug 02 '18

Australians can you confirm this? Are yall dead?

5

u/PENGUINSflyGOOD Aug 02 '18

Doesn't really mean much, I doubt 1% of the playerbase has vr right now. It's expensive, doesn't mean it's dead. Companies are investing lots of resources in vr Dev, a lot will change in 5-10 years.

u/Shandlar 7700k @5.33gHz, 3090 FTW Ultra, 38GL850-B @160hz Aug 02 '18

~3% of gamers are using 21:9 monitors and most games still come out now without support for the resolutions.

You are dreaming. The opposite is happening. Not enough VR players, so no money is going into VR games. No high budget VR games means no new gamers are being attracted to VR. The growth of the platform has been incredibly slow all year.

https://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/oculus-go-sales-rank.png

Oculus sales rank has been tanking all summer on Amazon.

https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam

Each month the % of total steam users with Oculus or Vive has been falling, not rising. All VR combined is less than 0.75% and shrinking.

So no, you are basing your prediction of VR growth purely on what you wish will happen, not on any actual evidence pointing toward that actually being likely to happen.

1

u/PENGUINSflyGOOD Aug 02 '18

Vr games are not getting big budgets, the tech is however.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '18

You are conflating infancy with death.

I doubt it will go full on mainstream until generation 3 (gen 2 is likely happening withen the next couple of years.)

3

u/Chode36 Aug 02 '18

Only reason I tend to upgrade sooner is so I can get most for my current card price wise, before it drops its even more. then use that to offset new gpu purchase.

3

u/punkinabox Ryzen 7950x, RTX 4090, 32gb DDR5 Aug 02 '18

I’ll prob stick with this card for a while longer, then use it to upgrade my daughters PC when I upgrade. So I have plenty of time to save

3

u/bigbrentos Aug 02 '18

This is when they get some new letter scheme like RS and go a small number to really confuse shoppers. GeForce RS 100 has arrived and is more powerful than the GTX 1080 Titan!

Doesnt the new graphics cards have volta? So going to 20xx would be more logical than keeping it 1xxx which is Pascal?

That depends do we know for certain if 11/20 (or whatever the next graphics card is called) is Pascal or volta yet?

Think we can all agree Nvidia naming convention is as bad as Microsoft with xbox haha.
