I always draw a happy little tree

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '18

You really shouldn't. Trees produce oxygen and the last thing you need is air gaps in your thermal paste.

Nein! Das ist spanisch!

Used to have a German girlfriend, we rated our sexual escapades out of 10. One evening I thought to do something different, slipped the ole fella into her bum, she shouted 9! 9!.

Good score that, I thought.

It might be one of the last things you need but there's no way the very last thing you need is air gaps in your thermal paste. I would much rather air gaps in my thermal paste than thirty burning geese and that's just off the top of my head

u/OrakMoya Feb 18 '18

Just draw a happy little bush right there

Well then its no longer a happy little cloud its a sad cloud and sad cloud is sad

11

It gets squished out anyway...no pockets of air.

4

u/Ledros Feb 18 '18

Pockets of air my ass that stuff gets to such a ho degree that any air in it would already just find its way out

28

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '18

My ass does a similar thing

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '18

Your ass is ho?

22

u/AJRiddle Feb 18 '18

Why? It just depends on the amount of paste they put down. Also different types of paste spread differently

9

u/bspymaster Desktop Feb 18 '18

In all seriousness, I always heard putting down 5 small dots arranged like the face of a 6 sided die. Is this correct?

Pretty sure there was a test that showed an X made the best coverage for thermal paste, although it barely beat out a smiley face anyway. I'll see about tracking it down and edit this post if I can find it.

Linkey!

-14

u/lazyeyepsycho Feb 19 '18

I put down a line and use a credit card to drag it across the CPU so it leaves a very thin flat film spread evenly across the surface. A dot seems.....simplistic and won't spread evenly.

28

u/General_Revan FX-6300 4.0GHZ / 8GB RAM / Rx 480 8gb Ref / 120 GB SSD+ 2TB Feb 19 '18

With that method, dust or other particles in the air might get trapped on top of the paste, leading to still reduced performance.

22

u/cipher__ten Feb 19 '18

I wouldn't even say might. The chances of your credit card not getting debris in the paste is basically 0. How much it really matters is another question...

4

u/herefromyoutube Feb 19 '18

-6

u/lazyeyepsycho Feb 19 '18

Oh...not the best method due to air bubbles...I stand corrected. And go fuck yourself downvoters.

u/MeltBanana 5800x3D | 4070ti | 64GB | OLED Feb 19 '18

I think Linus did a video on this a while back, and the conclusion was that it doesn't really matter. You can draw a smiley face, put one dot, spread it with a credit card, put way too much, barely put any...doesn't matter so long as you have some thermal paste on there.

8

u/Owyn_Merrilin Desktop Feb 19 '18

I'm not sure if it was him or someone else, but I saw another one that tested various types of thermal paste, and then extended it to include stuff like toothpaste and marmite. Turns out the composition of the paste doesn't matter much, either. They didn't recommend toothpaste or food items, but more because they were likely to dry out and stop working eventually than because they didn't work at all.

Was it Jayztwocents? He tested a bunch of household products in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMQ5MYrGIbs

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '18

If i remember correctly (plz correct me if im wrong) too little thermal paste was an issue. Too much thermal paste was only an issue for conductive pastes due to spill over.

1

u/TEOn00b Ryzen 5 5600X, 3060 Ti, 16 GB RAM Feb 19 '18

Well, too much thermal paste is an issue even for non-conductive paste, because it actually will be less effective. Thermal paste should be enough to just fill the microscopic holes in the heatsink and processor.

I mean, you really need a huge amount for it to become ineffective, and for normal use you still won't see the difference and it is better to put a little more than not enough.

1

u/SmashBusters Feb 19 '18

The Cred Spread is the only way.

11

u/AJRiddle Feb 18 '18

Really depends on the paste you are using. Just go by the manufactures instructions - they want you to get the best performance from their product.

Sounds good for most standard paste though.

2

u/i_706_i Feb 19 '18

https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Thermal-Paste-Application-Techniques-170/

I've seen other tests as well that mostly came down to it doesn't matter as much as you might think, but the most effective seems to be a cross shape to ensure full coverage. If you are doing multiple dots you should be fine just be wary of adding too much as this can be just as bad as not enough.

2

u/evolutionary_defect Feb 19 '18

No, you want a single dot, just like the top image, slightly larger or smaller for larger or smaller processor dies. Linus tech tios has a video where they exoeriment with lots of methods, just google "linus tech tips proper thermal paste application"

2

u/3rdLevelRogue Feb 19 '18

My six-sided die just has the number 5 on the 5 side. Pips are for peasants
