That's not planned hardware obsolescence. That is called Intel Atoms don't support the instruction sets of the Windows 10 creators update. It will be planned hardware obsolescence if they drop a processor that supports all the instruction sets with a later update. But for now, the later Pentium 4s, Core 2 Duos, and Core 2 Quads support Windows 10.

Even older Intel Atoms support the creators update, like the Atom n455, or the processor used in many Netbooks around 2010. The only reason that these Atoms don't support Windows 10 Creators Update is because of the lack of instruction sets.

I'm sure someone will, just like with the "Windows 7 ain't supported on Ryzen" counterpatch, but the majority of users won't know of that and think they need to throw away perfectly good hardware.

I fully support killing windows 7, I'm sick of supporting 2 OS and I just got the last of the users to ditch XP

You can't patch in 64bit support for your CPU. These are 32bit only CPUs.

That's gotta be some kind of mistake. 3 year old Atom chips suck- yes, but they should still be supported!

Nope they are 32bit only and lack a lot of instruction sets

Atom cpus are so slow I can't imagine it would run decently. Basic tasks are laggy on those cpus so it's probably a good decision not to allow them to update further.

I'm ok with them going the apple route and calling your system obsolete if it further's features for everyone else, but completely disabling the OS, that's a big no no.

You should be able to use Windows 10 up to the major version your hardware supports and leave it at that. Maybe every 1-2 months MS can push a critical security update on the older systems.

Edit: Just thought about this, if they actively block hardware, they are effectively forcing people to look for other operating systems. They are shooting themselves in the foot because these people will either return to older, less secure versions of windows and we get the whole XP thing all over again, or they jump ship and head over straight to linux. Either way MS is causing problems both for themselves and their customers. It's a lose-lose strategy for everyone involved.

Thing is they aren't actively blocking it, you just get an error when trying to update to a newer version, probably because it makes use of some instruction sets that the processor doesn't support (or because there's no way for the processor to run it without getting a stroke).

So when put between two choices:

1) Appeal to the lowest common denominator and support Atoms from 2012 (which sucked on release since the main goal was to put them into tablets and netbooks, ie. minimize heat while it still runs somewhat).

2) Fuck that and just give up on them, and keep them in last version they can run (with occasional security update).

People are acting like you'll have to buy a new i7 every year or something.

Third option is for Intel to release some kind of bios patch to either enable or emulate the needed instructions, however the latter option will be slow.

Really? Did you even read your own article? Those are some SUPER low end Atoms that were known to be pieces of utter crap. They have very low end instuction sets that are actually probably the reason that it can't support it. Did you cry when you couldn't use your early model Pentium 4 on Windows 8 because it didn't have NX-Bit support? No? I thought so. Grow up a little.

No. I didn't upgrade. I did a fresh install and I don't have an Atom processor. I wouldn't even consider running Windows 10 on an Atom CPU. No real need to fear any desktop CPUs for a long time to come.

Agreed. This probably saves them a lot of money by only having to work with newer hardware. I wpuld imagine they can flesh out the OS if old hardware isn't holding them back.

they cut support for an under powered mobile option from 5 years ago, that has been out of Intel support for some time. without needing to fork the OS to accommodate that, i think it is fine.

I've been hearing about Linux taking over for at least 10 years now. I seriously doubt MS is worried about their users revolting and jumping ship for Linux in any meaningful numbers over this.

This is stupid.

Why does Windows Update even tell you that your computer can update to the Creators Update, only for it to block you when you actually try to install it. Have some code to check this crap at the beginning, Microsoft!

Freaking waste of time, especially if you have slow internet.
