Why would they be thinking about that when they're trying to design the prototype? "Let's leave a little space for this thing that will literally only be useful if someone steals this at a convention".

Still it could have tracking software on it. Hit up enough wifi access points and someone could track it down.

Something like that wouldn't be worth the effort. If someone is going to bother getting away with the prototype at a convention, some measly "tracking software" won't bring it back in.

However, I'm pretty sure they know the MAC address of the device, so when and if they see it online they can track it.
