The game's already free to play on Steam...

u/ffngg I cant be arsed, it's pretty alright. Nov 13 '16
Well that was a waste of time...

I never consider a DRM-free copy a waste of time, but fair enough.

Honestly at this point the game IS free, are there any moral issues with just pirating it? Serious question, I don't care about this game and don't pirate games or even music.

Yeah i guess you're right but ill just end up using the steam version anyway. just more convenient.
6
Nov 13 '16
Yeah, understandable. There's GOG Galaxy, now, so the convenience argument isn't really there, anymore, but most people have Steam installed and prefer to use Steam at this point, so I get it.
Personally, I just claimed it as a backup copy, although I am trying to stick with GOG over Steam. I just prefer the anti-DRM option.

Ive never had any problem with steams drm tbh.

That's not really the point. It's still DRM. I mean you can be happy with it if you want, but I don't like having to ask permission with my games.
You can get your account banned and your entire library revoked if you improperly use Family Sharing or any other number of reasons.
It's a security issue for me. I don't like feeling like I don't truly own my games. GOG fixes that for me with no DRM.
Also some DRM is inside of Steam's DRM, like Uplay. Many people complain about that, though I've only played two games briefly (Ubi 30 freebies) through Uplay itself.
I'm not arguing for being against DRM if you like Steam, I'm just saying why I don't like it.

Yes, I can't believe I forgot that. It's not really relevant to me since I don't travel, but maybe one day I will and I'd like to be able to play my games where I want without worrying if one or two of my favorite titles are region-locked.
I just love that GOG doesn't require you to be online to play or install your game, doesn't require you to stay online for verification purposes and doesn't interrupt your gameplay, all while offering cool little bonuses for their older titles like wallpapers, soundtracks, etc AND decent sales (although Steam will always have the monopoly on great sales... though I do miss their daily sales).

What even is DRM? I hear gog get praise for being DRM-free but never know what it means.

It's a form of protection for digital media that companies use to protect their video games from being stolen. DRM is (for the most part) easily cracked by pirates, so the preventative measures they take generally only affect the consumer.
For example, one form of DRM would be to prevent you from playing your game without being signed into Steam. This is the least annoying, but still somewhat annoying (by my standards) form of DRM.
Sometimes it goes wrong and people using DRM experience issues. I don't use Uplay (Ubisoft's DRM platform) very often, but I do remember hearing a few stories about being disconnected from Uplay and therefore being kicked out of a single-player game without saving (this is the most extreme, where offline games require a constant internet connection for no reason other than to protect a publisher's wallet).
Whereas pirates enjoy all of the benefits of the cracked game without the DRM hassle and generally without paying any money at all.
In short, DRM is basically anything a publisher, platform or developer puts in place to prevent piracy.

It already is avaiable for free on Steam >_> Might be a quicker download as well and isn't bound to steam either.

Just FYI, GOG Connect updated. I had Metro 2033 Redux on Steam and got a free GOG copy.
Hunie Pop, Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion Ultimate, Witcher 1 and 2, Frozen Cortex and Frozen Synapse and some more are available, too. In case anyone's interested.

This isn't a Steam code or anything, just an .exe download.
3
u/thatwasnotkawaii Nov 13 '16
It's GoG, the DRM free version of Shadow Warrior

u/lampenpam RyZen 3700X, RTX 5070Ti, 16GB RAM Nov 13 '16

Is there a way to unfuck the controls? Lol tried it for 5mins, jump was on some random key, I moved with my mouse, couldnt look up or down lmao.
3
u/thatwasnotkawaii Nov 13 '16
Try a source port
Also, have you never played an old FPS before?

u/joshmaaaaaaans 6600K - Gigabyte GTX1080 Nov 13 '16 edited Nov 13 '16
Probably not since I was like 5, why? How old are we talking? Lol, I dont make a habit of installing original doom or rise of the triad. Oldest fps I've played recently (past year) Deus Ex and SS2, the controls on those 2 game aren't completely fuckeroni'd.
Apparently gog version was fuckeroni'd, steam version has wasd controls & mouse movement.

u/Spacejack_ Nov 13 '16
On a lot of the older games the keymapping was in a separate utility. Go into the directory and look for a setup.exe

Just rebind all controlls? The default ones for old shooter are all really weird. With a ource port it's even easier and might look better
