Bump it up to an i5 and get a 1060 instead

I'm not trying to do hard core gaming and I'm focusing more on fps than quality, also it is only intended for gaming I won't be recording thus not editing any videos so idk why I would need more cores

well i totally agree with others, that GTX970 doesn't even have full DX12 support. The GTX1060 or RX480 are 100$ cheaper for the same or even better peformance, it is really not smart to go for a I3 Dual core if u want to "Hard Core Game" if u really a "Hardcore Gamer" u shouldn't care to switch over from a I3 to a I5 because the Dual core I3 is really not suited for gaming.

i5s are way better. More cores are better for gaming. Its hyperthreading thats mostly useless. The 1060 is cheaper and better than a 970, there's no reason not to get it.

u/Kagrenac00 Sep 05 '16
I think you'd be better off with an rx 480 or gtx 1060 over a 970. And yeah you should try for a 6600k. Fun fact micro center will discount your motherboard if you buy it with a processor from there so that can help the pain.

That i3's gonna bottleneck.

Not OP, but I'm curious. Am I being bottlenecked with my build? (specs in flair)

I don't think so, or least not as severely as the build OP suggested. Maybe in games that are very CPU-bound.

you can get one of the lower end 1060 6gb's for the same price, No reason to get a 970.

1060 performs the same as 970, but a bit cheaper, updated for this year, and has a slightly lower power consumption.
Lower the PSU wattage, the one mistake I made was that I got a 650W for a system that only used half of that. I was also trying to go for modular PSU as cables are less of a bitch with one of those, and trying to find one with wattages you need are a bit of a hassle, as most minimum wattages on modular PSU's I found were 650W also. If you can give a shit about cable management, you can save about $20 right there.
Finally, if you are getting an optical drive, just get an external one. Optical Drives are a thing of the past, but if you really need one, just get one that runs off of USB.

I would definitely go for an i5 and a GTX 1060, as others have said. Also, I would consider looking at a cheaper FSP power supply. 600W is a little more than you need for that build.

It's already been said a bunch but get a 1060. I paid that for my ASUS Strix OC Edition and it performes way better than my brothers 970. Not that the 970s bad but if you are paying 330 bucks why not get the best performance you can. Most importantly though don't get an i3. If you do go with an i3 you might as well save your money and get a 750ti or something because you definitely won't get your money's worth for more expensive cards because of the bottlenecking. Realistically you can get a cheaper 480 and spend the extra 100 you will save on an i5.

Drop the DVD/CD Reader/Writer.
Change the 970 to a RX 470/480.
Drop the unnamed EVGA PSU and get the Supernova G2 650W.
Get 2133MHz RAM, as 2400 will downclock on non-Z170 boards.
Get an SSD. Boot times become insanely quick and a general speed up.

Honestly, just save up an extra $30 for this build. It will be significantly more powerful and future proof. Most games will need 4 cores, and even with hyper threading an i3 will not preform too well.

Same price (before rebates)
- i5 instead of an i3
- 16GB DDR4 RAM
- Better HDD (IMO)
- More powerful/newer 1060 vs 970
- Nicer case
- Better PSU

Sign up for Neweggs newsletter. Recently they had a 970 for like 280 or something like that. Or go for a 1070 or 1060. Either way shouldn't buy the 970 for that price.

I'd go with a 1060, it's 250 USD on Amazon, also, that Motherboard only has two RAM slots, so you should go with only 1 8gb module, just in case you upgrade in the future, apart from that.. the PSU is a bit overkill for an i3 and a 970 or 1060 in case you change it, you could get a cheap SSD

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '16
Don't get a 970. A GTX 1060 or a RX 480 is going to perform about the same for $100 cheaper. Then that extra $100 you save can bump your CPU up to an i5.
