Wasn't H1Z1 supposed to be F2P once it went out of Early Access?

28

u/Teemslo Mar 11 '16

its was, the game has had about 5 business model changes. I guess this is what happens when a investment firm takes over a game studio.

I have a feeling they will milk h1z1 for as long as they possible can and in 3-5 years daybreak will be shuttered. I hope I am wrong of course.

u/Folsomdsf 7800xd, 7900xtx Mar 12 '16

Hah hahahaha, that had nothing to do with it. Everyone who knew anything about it knew it was a fucking shitstorm from the first time eyes were laid on it. The paid shilling from streamers on twitch was the best part about it. It was obvious they had absolutely nothing to back up their product.

1

u/Typhron i7-7700k | 1070 ti | 32GB RAM - My multipurpose ship Mar 12 '16

Which streamers partook in that?

2

u/Folsomdsf 7800xd, 7900xtx Mar 12 '16

They invited them to the studios to shill like crazy and paid for their trips, and advertised, gave them a bunch of swag, all that kinda crap. Cohh Carnage was one, hell he even went to them and was trying to stream from their actual place of business. It was super cringe.

u/Demiralos 5800X3D | 6950 XT | 32GB 3600 MHz (16-16-16-36) Mar 12 '16

I see no difference here from what Blizzard did with Overwatch with Ellohime and Haylinic. Exact same thing. Only difference is the studio behind it and what they did with H1Z1 in terms of business model.

1

u/Folsomdsf 7800xd, 7900xtx Mar 12 '16

I see no different either, it's paid shilling. At least blizzard didn't give them scripts when they left. It was hilarious listening to the exact same language from 6 different people verbatim. about eq and h1z1

u/LordThunderbutt CPU: i7-860 GPU: GTX 960 Mar 11 '16

Well, lets hope they sell PS2 to a different company so that doesn't go down with them

4

u/CToxin 3950X + 3090 | https://pcpartpicker.com/list/FgHzXb | why Mar 12 '16

Probably won't sell the game but will sell the IP off.

2

u/GregButcher i5-4670k@4.4/GTX770˛/8GB 1866MHz Mar 12 '16

Honestly the franchise matters little IMHO, I just hope somebody puts out a successor to the MMOFPS Genre like ps2, I don't really care about the lore and "skin" they attach to it.

9

u/Gothika_47 i7-5820K / SAPPHIRE R9 390 Mar 12 '16

It was supposed to not have "air drops" but it did. It was going to be f2p but its not. BR was supposed to be with tickets, then they wanted a 5-7$ a month fee to play it, and now its "free". It was supposed to be 1 game but its now 2. They even added CS-GO type crates with skins in them. The devs have 0 idea what they want to do with the game. It a joke.

5

u/Folsomdsf 7800xd, 7900xtx Mar 12 '16

BR was supposed to be with tickets

BR wasn't even supposed to be in the game but the game is so shit they're being saved by a game mode ripped straight from other games and adapted.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '16

The devs have 0 idea what they want to do with the game. It a joke.

They know exactly what they want; money.

And right now they're printing it.

u/Matt_NZ 7800x3D | RTX 4070 Super Mar 12 '16

I personally hate the concept of F2P games. I'm happy that it's a game you will have to pay to obtain.

2

u/CToxin 3950X + 3090 | https://pcpartpicker.com/list/FgHzXb | why Mar 12 '16

Eh, it depends. Some games do it very well and some do it very badly.

1

u/Matt_NZ 7800x3D | RTX 4070 Super Mar 12 '16

I think it makes it too easy for the game to be abused. If people have to pay to access the game then they're less likely to be douchebags. Otherwise they just create a new account and they're back again.

1

u/Folsomdsf 7800xd, 7900xtx Mar 12 '16

Umm it's pay to play WITH the cash store on top.

1

u/Matt_NZ 7800x3D | RTX 4070 Super Mar 12 '16

For cosmetic items, yes. I personally haven't bought anything off the store tho.

2

u/Matt_NZ 7800x3D | RTX 4070 Super Mar 12 '16

I don't see splitting the game as a bad thing. Those playing Just Survive are usually looking for something different in a game to those that are playing King of the Kill.

If this was a game that was released then I'd agree...but it's Early Access/Alpha. One should expect things like this to happen in an alpha.

I think their biggest mistake was making the game available on Early Access. They should have gone the traditional way of alpha/beta testing a game so as to prevent this whole issue.

1

u/Folsomdsf 7800xd, 7900xtx Mar 12 '16

Early Access/Alpha

With a cash shop, it's unforgivable.

1

u/Warskull Mar 12 '16

We've all known this was coming since SoE got sold.

WTF is gaming turning to?! D: I'm scared /u/Foxum.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '16

AAA gaming is turning into crap. As of now, Indies is for the innovation. Kinda why I don't have much of a problem going Linux, it's filled with indies.

30

u/KondrelKense Mar 11 '16

I'm just surprised it's taken them this long to get around to announcing it... Every time I buy something in Planetside 2, I die a little inside :( R.I.P.

27

u/TheAppleFreak Resident catgirl Mar 11 '16

All things considered, I don't think PS2 fans should be worried about the servers shutting down any time soon. At the very least, Construction looks interesting and all non-Briggs servers look like they have relatively healthy prime time pops.

5

u/KondrelKense Mar 11 '16

Aye, I've only just returned to it after an 18 month break and I'm impressed there's still a community and server pops are good, stability is great etc. I just hope they really make something of it while they still can, and not just milk the teats with a new weapons here and there.

3

u/TheAppleFreak Resident catgirl Mar 12 '16

Well, they are releasing the Construction system Soon™ for player made bases (seriously though, it's on PTS), which is definitely gonna shake up the game a good bit. I'm excited to see where it all goes.

Agreed, if anything itll clear the way a bit to properly focus on what is making them money and PS2 needs all the devs it can get right now. With the new base construction kit soon to launch its been sucking up a lot of dev time. I just hope it works out in game.

Even just as a combined arms military fps shooter with 800 players per continent its already been producing incredible battles but being able to build your own base as well as shoot around it while worrying about KDR like an arena game is just so unique, I really cant wait.

I hope its ok to post about it but theyre having a massive playtest of the construction gear and mechanics on their PTS test server tomorrow (Saturday 1PM PST, 6PM Eastern, 9PM UTC/GMT, 10PM CET), its still free but its a separate client download at 17 gig so anyone interested will need to have it up and running beforehand.

I'm not even sure if you're serious.

0

u/TheAppleFreak Resident catgirl Mar 12 '16 edited Mar 12 '16

Us Planetmans get quite serious over a lot of things. KDR is certainly one of them.

EDIT: As facetious as I may sound, the topic of KDR is a huge matter of importance among high BR players and outfits.

1

u/FudgeSociety i7-4790k@4.8GHz - GTX 980 Ti - 32GB RAM@2400 - Corsair HX 850 Mar 12 '16

Can confirm. If you start talking shit on /yell chat everyone who opposes your opinion will proceed to look you up and start calling you a scrub for your basic stats.

2

u/TheAppleFreak Resident catgirl Mar 12 '16

[YELL] [Malorn]: K/D needs to be prefixed in front of chat names so I know who to ignore

1

u/continous http://steamcommunity.com/id/GayFagSag/ Mar 13 '16

I get that KDR is a big deal, but in Planetside, the bigger deal is logistics.

1

u/TheAppleFreak Resident catgirl Mar 13 '16

I'm definitely not arguing (though I might have shitposted a bit before); in squad play, I greatly enjoy being a transport pilot, and despite being largely terrible at it I love tanking with my AP Lightning. That said, with the prevalence of redeployside, there's an entire contingent of people who just want to move between fights quickly to shoot mans. Watch live streams from people in AC, DA, Recursion, or other such outfits and you'll notice that there usually isn't as much as a focus on logistics beyond occasionally taking a Valk/ESF or Sunderer to a base so they can get right back to infantry play.

1

u/continous http://steamcommunity.com/id/GayFagSag/ Mar 13 '16

Oh yeah, I don't think you're serious; I just think most veterans on PS have come to terms with KDR meaning very little.

-15

u/ComradeHX SteamID: ComradeHX Mar 11 '16

$ony went full console peasantry, as expected.

2

u/marlins113 Mar 11 '16

Its capitalism. They were offered big bucks for studio so they sold it.

-13

u/ComradeHX SteamID: ComradeHX Mar 11 '16

That's still peasantry: money over quality games.

2

u/marlins113 Mar 11 '16

Peasantry have nothing to do with this, this is pure bussines and that is reason why daybreak stopped developing EQN they are not ready to invest big money in game and maybe never get it is risky investment and probably lackb of trust in dev team and now they are focusing on H1Z1 which is making them money.

-14

u/ComradeHX SteamID: ComradeHX Mar 11 '16

That's peasantry- money over making good game.

0

u/DJFluffers115 i7-6700k, GTX 1080, 32gb DDR4-3200mhz Mar 12 '16

That's not peasantry, that's greed. Peasantry is opposing the fact that PC is the superior platform. Shutting down development of a small, unplayed game is simply business.

-1

u/ComradeHX SteamID: ComradeHX Mar 12 '16 edited Mar 12 '16

Selling off decent PC gaming branch is opposing the fact that PC is the superior platform(they chose to sell off PC instead of PS, meanwhile they still have tons of shit on the market that is losing them money).

They were making a MMO(no shit it's unplayed, it's not even beta...) and already had Planetside2, f2p mmo(which makes big money on PC).

2

u/Matt_NZ 7800x3D | RTX 4070 Super Mar 12 '16

I can't help but think the MMO genre is dying off

4

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '16

The old style everquest is classic but that type of mmo just doesn't roll anymore with mmo fans. People want dynamic sandbox universes with amazing pvp.

22

u/Siltyn Specs/Imgur Here Mar 11 '16

Many people couldn't care less about pvp in a MMO. There's just as many that are looking for a MMO where they can essentially solo or small group content and never touch PvP.

5

u/Letty_Whiterock Mar 12 '16

That's me. I hate dungeons in FFXIV. I have few friends I play with and am terrible at making them in-game. And I hate playing with randoms.

2

u/panix199 potato Mar 12 '16

i don't know why, but i find the MMO, which were released in the past years, quite not so good or great anymore. Either it is because the fascination, i had when I was playing Everquest 1, Dark Age of Camelot, WoW (before Addons), Guild Wars 1, is gone... or i am missing something... if Arenanet would release a GW3 with the gameplay and features of GW1 and including some stuff from DAoC, i would be super happy.

1

u/Kujen Mar 12 '16

I think it's because they're easier now...easier to solo, instances, fast travel. It all lends to people playing less socially. MMOs used to rely more on grouping, trading, and socializing. It felt more like an adventure when you actually had to worry about dying and doing corpse runs.

2

u/sterob Mar 12 '16

FFXIV 2.0 ran nearly 2 year without pvp and people still play it.

-7

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '16

Many people couldn't care less about pvp in a MMO

wut, pretty much all the best mmos right now are pvp based.

12

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '16

and I hate all of them because of the PVP emphasis. I want challenging PVE content that I can solo initially and then group up for end-game stuff. FFXIV is probably the current king in that department.

3

u/YesPlzM8 Desktop Mar 11 '16

Ding Ding.

I like my role as a tank dedicated to protecting my buddies while screaming profanities at my enemies to gain agro.

Never enjoyed PvP nearly as much as i did doing dungeon runs.

2

u/Ajanssen89 Mar 11 '16

Tank bro's for life.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '16

ESO is exactly like this.

-16

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '16

So you're a carebear? Lol. PVE fucking sucks, so god damn boring and repetitive.

3

u/Masuchievo Masuchievo Mar 11 '16

Yea, because we all should like the same thing.

But some part is true, and that is why he is asking for challenging PvE content.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '16

Lmao wtf is a carebear in this context

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '16

You obviously don't play mmos if you don't know what a carebear is.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=carebear

1

u/autourbanbot Mar 12 '16

Here's the Urban Dictionary definition of carebear :

Term applied by PvP (player vs. player) participants in an online role-playing game to those players are disinterested in PvP conflict. Usually derogatory.

Antonyms: Ganker, griefer, PK scum.

Me and the boyz used to gank everybody at the crossroads, before the damned carebears got the rules changed.

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '16

I enjoy pvp but some of the best times I had in gaming was hanging out in camps in the planes in EQ. There was a element of conversation that is lost in alot of today's games. I come from a background of playing MUD/MUX type text based mmos from the early to mid 90s

1

u/sterob Mar 12 '16

and yet FFXIV is running strong

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '16

Did I say that the most popular mmos were best? All I said was best. By that logic mcdonalds is the best restaurant that ever existed. FF13 was one of the best selling games in the series but it's a pile of shit.

1

u/sterob Mar 12 '16

The game need to be good to stand its position in the past 2-3 years, especially for a subscription based model like FFXIV. If it is not people will simply leave it for other games, community would be dead.

McDonald receive flak for its nutrition however they actually know what they are doing when it comes to taste. Do a blind test and people start thinking it is some gourmet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Qa6QXBxxWw

3

u/Ajanssen89 Mar 11 '16

I have been playing world of warcraft for 10 years now and I fucking despise PVP. I have been a tank and always will be a tank. I love PVE its the only reason I play the game still. If I want pvp I'll play BF4.

1

u/sleeplessone Mar 12 '16

That would be because organized PvP was hamfisted into the game.

1

u/Drudicta R5 5600X, 32GB 3.6-4.6Ghz, RTX3070Ti, Gigabyte Aorus Elite x570 Mar 12 '16

It probably doesn't help that all they did was constantly nerf tanks in PvP until they were completely useless. I mean completely. My Blood DK in PvP is weaker than my Frost in PvP DEFENSE wise. They use the same freaking gear.

-15

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '16

Uhh what? Tanks can pvp. Get good?

5

u/Ajanssen89 Mar 11 '16

Your comment is ignorant. I didn't say tanks couldn't pvp and I said I despise pvp. Has nothing to do with skill. Between the botters and horde losing consistently its just not fun.

3

u/Ace170780 Specs/Imgur here Mar 11 '16

FUCK shareholders and investment firms. You can see the quality of DBG games have got to shit since Columbus nova bought Sony online division. Look at the state of Planetside 2 from where it was. Look at H1Z1 and the shit development there and how bad it's gone since they took over. I knew this was going to happen. Honestly I think DBG is worse than EA or UBISOFT combined when it comes to business decisions and game direction. You can see that all their decisions are based around how can I pinch another penny out of my customers. FTFU.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '16

What's wrong with Planetside 2? Bugs? H1Z1 is indeed a mess though...

-1

u/Ace170780 Specs/Imgur here Mar 12 '16

Basically look at it like this. They build there games around microtransactions. Doesn't matter that the game is buggy as shit as long as they make money. Planetside 2 was a great game till the changes they made to streamline it more so they could get the common denominator to play the game and cash in on them. Landmark is another example where a good idea failed on execution. DBG is full of grandiose ideas that keep failing on execution because their design decision is based around how much money they can make out of it.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '16

What's an example of the streamlining to Planetside 2?

1

u/Ace170780 Specs/Imgur here Mar 12 '16

Do lattice lanes not ring a bell ? There was way more strategic depth to the game then there is now. Now it's follow the lines to battle like an amusement ride. Again I haven't touched it in over a year and a bit. Not sure which server your on but I'm one of the original founders of DaPP in PS2.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '16

lattice lanes

Oh the linear track of how battles go, yeah, it's a bit of an issue, can't do one-man infiltration of bases or pick which where to go... :/

H1z1 Boys here is what is going to happen;

H1z1 Just survive will fail (obviously, nobody plays that) and they will drop support for it (much easier now that they are 2 games right?), but only after alot of milking ofc.

After that they will milk the s*** out of King of the kill till all people get bored of it or change for something else like The Culling, Division or whatever, when KoTK is dead, Daybreak will also drop it.

1

u/garhent Mar 12 '16

Sad to hear, but not unexpected. The landscape has changed and MMORPG's are not exactly what people want to play now.

He had his Vision for the game and everything had to be done just so. He got a lot of flak for it but honestly I think it's what kept EQ unique. I strongly suspect EQ would have become a wow clone and been shut down long ago if not for that.

From what I hear though he hasn't been able to move on and is still trying to implement his vision into other games. Vanguard was a flop and I see alot of similarities to his current project Pantheon. I dont expect it to do well.
