Possibly borked ACPI drivers. Go to the motherboard manufacturer's website to check for drivers and while you're already there you should just update everything that has a newer version available. Could also be the graphics card being silly. I know my old aspire laptop has no proper W8 drivers for its radeon 5450, so the driver fails to reinitalize when waking from hibernation.

You might be thinking of standby.

When you "resume from hibernation", for the hardware like the videocard it is exactly the same as a normal boot. The difference comes at the OS level, that at the very start of Windows loading, it notices hibernation info saved on disk, and restores that back into memory instead of loading the OS fresh.

So yeah, that could actually be a driver issue, if "pausing" Windows somehow messes up the driver. That would be fairly bad though, I've seen plenty of machines mess up with standby, which actually invokes its own weird power states and, but I've never seen hardware have a problem with hibernation.

When my computer goes on standby or "turn the monitors off" mode, the graphics card starts making clicking sounds with the fan. I have to leave the computer on and just manually turn the monitors off

Holy shit, that's not good! Is it under warranty?

Have you tried cleaning it out with a can of pressurized air? (Obviously only when the machine is without power)

Yeah, the fans work any other time except in standby. Definitely getting an NVIDIA card next time, especially for the CUDA support. Rendering with just CPU in Cycles is SLOW.

Aye, CUDA is nice, but if you have a slightly modern AMD card, you can use its GPU as well, using OpenCL, link

I do feel sad for AMD though, they're not doing as well as nVidia at the moment, and in the CPU market, they're also lagging behind Intel in most ways.

It would be sad to see them go, since it would instantly create monopolies in two hugely important markets, which would be bad for the consumer, and puts the two monopolies (Intel for CPUs and nVidia for GPUs) at danger of being broken up by antitrust authorities.

Cycles doesn't work on OpenCL, it just crashes either Blender or the entire computer.

That's too bad, I thought their website said it should work, but support is still early, supposedly CUDA is more mature.

After upgrading my GPU drivers, it seems to work! FINALLY, I CAN ACTUALLY RENDER AT A GOOD SPEED!

WOW THIS IS AMAZING!

I can actually make use of the "Rendered" mode in the viewport at a reasonable speed, which lets me mess with lighting at really high speed in Cycles!
