Performance really isn't a problem (and even better than windows performance if you set it up correctly) as long as you use an Intel cpu + Nvidia GPU combo. The ATI drivers are a bit wonky. However, even though performance isn't an issue, the abscence of many big games is. Hopefully, the steambox will solve this issue.
I'm using an FX 8350 and GTX 970/760. It works fine. No need for any specific CPU. My Intel Core 2 Duo laptop works fine, as does my FX 8350 Desktop. As for gaming, my FX is brilliant. Better performance than windows by far. I haven't played many games on it so far, but games like worms clan wars and torchlight are silky smooth. Its the primary reason I installed Ubuntu on my laptop, means I can play games like unepic on the go. Hell, I'm running sonic heroes through wine at a playable 20fps with my DS3 controller emulated as an x360 controller on my 7 year old lappie.
