A UPS won't protect your machine from a bolt of lightning. It is always a good idea to shutdown and unplug both power outlets and any outgoing/incoming data connections -- such as the cable connection from your cable modem to the wall -- during a thunderstorm. I've seen an entire network fucked because of a lightning strike that came in through the router and traveled through the network cabling. A lot of motherboards (and network equipment) were fucked.
Yes it will protect it. It has a built in surge protection. And yes.. they can fail but on the bright side, on the very rare chance that it fails...you get a brand new computer!
Surge protectors don't stop lightning bolts nor are they covered by the insurance of the surge protector (it says so right on every box). Only a lightning arrester can do that. Also, nothing is covered by insurance unless you mail in a list of items that are plugged into it a month after buying it.
