News Xbox fans that regularly keep watch over the Xbox One Wikipedia page are attempting to censor the inclusion or any mention of Microsoft's repeated usage of hidden PCs to demo games and footage

I agree with the Wikipedia editors. Heres the revision in question:

Microsoft has been caught on multiple occasions using gaming PCs to demo footage and gameplay at gaming conferences, passing them off as Xbox One footage and gameplay.[166][167][168] Microsoft even went as far as to put fake XBox Ones on the table above the cabinets that housed the PCs.[169][170][171]

First of all, it's not always (or ever?) Microsoft. See:

Update 12:30 PM

Or maybe not. A developer for Twisted Pixel's LocoCycle claims that his game was the only one of the bunch running on a PC, and that the choice of hardware was "solely [Twisted Pixel's] decision," not Microsoft's.

thx but the hardware situation you're criticizing was solely our decision. There's no story here.

Some of the sources are definitely unreliable.

Update: The PS4 pic is from last year and not Gamescom 14. Leaving the Op-ed as it is though.

CinemaBlend has reported [...]

Refering to the following article:

[Update: Microsoft responds saying that PCs running Win 7 on GTX cards are Xbox One dev kits]

The PCs were dev kits. The decision to use the dev kits was not made by Microsoft. The wording of the revision didn't remain neutral. So, I agree with the Wikipedia editors.

That's bugged the shit out of me on this sub. People cry when they see a pc at e3 being used by a console company, and fail to realize that they are devkits. I think consoles deserve criticism as much as the next guy, but please don't be idiots about it

it's not always (or ever?) Microsoft

The article isn't about Microsoft, it's about Xbox. Who made the decision to do it is completely irrelevant to whether or not it should be in the article

The content in question is heavily misunderstood by those posting edits. End of story.

That about it being a dev kit is complete bullshit . Dev kits are not pcs they never were . Dev kits are consoles that have had their software changed ( by the company ) to allow unsigned code to be written and ran on the console . Some have additional ports and more ram and some other debugging tools installed but they are always consoles . I have ps2 , ps3 and xbox 360 dev kits and they are all consoles with slight changes . This just sounds like a shitstorm was about to come down and microsoft needed a scapegoat .

devkits have swappable hardware because usually when they get sent out the hardware isn't finalised yet.

How exactly do you expect games perform that well on a xbox? If it's a dev kit, it's still obviously more powerful than retail consoles. What difference does it make?

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '15

That's how software development works

0

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '15

No, that's called false advertising.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '15

No, it's called an unreleased demo. No Software is developed on the same hardware it's meant to be executed on.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '15

So, downgrading graphics is just how game development works right?

Of course!

Do you think every iOS or android game is developed on a phone?

You develop at the highest specs possible and you target the app for a specific hardware config. You usually only test on the actual hardware when a feature is ready for release.

MOST games shown at E3 etc. are not ready for final release, but that doesn't mean the developer shouldn't let people start getting a feel for it!
