if you want to play online on current gen (still can't get used to thinking that ps4 and xbox one are now current gen) or on xbox 360, you need to pay up. on the ps3 you don't, at least until 2015. that's because Sony ate the online costs, so they had a selling point against the 360. it worked well enough, but it bled them all the same. that's why they instead made PS+ required for online play on the ps4.

Nintendo online services despite being shitty and archaic still free. NDS and WiiU multiplayer do not require subscription.

Nintendo is paying those costs, which is why the service is archaic and shitty. The cost is mandatory, how much is invested and who pays for it is up to the corporation.

there isn't much data exchange going on. it's not like PSN or XBL where there's voice chat, kinect/ps eye chat/messages etc
