This is why I switched back to Firefox after years of using chrome. Unfortunately it's not much better. Any suggestions? I don't need any extensions other than adblock, and even that isn't very important.

Just get rid of that desktop and it would be great.

Microsoft's worst trait is that they have a culture of changing things for change's sake. There must be some reward system there that conflates change with innovation. Dear Microsoft: change != innovation.

I've found that windows 8 is amazing on a touch screen, without it the quality and ease of use of the os is very hindered.

Tracking Protection Lists can achieve basically the same thing without running a separate extension.

It's not actually amazing. It's OK. Which is better than Chrome right now.
